Who Would Be Interested In Doing A Collaboration Classic Hunter With Me??

Dave, you da man. I'll do that. Go ahead and forget about it til tomorrow because it will be way late tonight/morning before I email them. DO NOT wait up tonight for the email. Thanks Dave. This thing is looking good Dave and your grinds on the damascus are just super.

The pix do not show the mokume pattern well for two reasons: I don't operate a camera very well and because in finishing I buffed away the nice oxidation that had caused the pattern to contrast so well as it had before finishing work. That is why I will not be applying any wax or other coating to the mokume bolsters, so as to allow them exposure to atmosphere. In time they will burst forth with contasting color.

Roger I just saw where you'd sent me the pics. I'll post them tonight, sorry I missed them this morning but now I'm off to work... :(

Oh man, check this out:

Way to go guys! I am very happy. :D Looks like that fits up perfectly, and one classy knife! It's so fine to see something happening with this project, and thanks to everyone who's contributed.

Man O Man that knife is very cool! I cant wait to get it here. I still need to order the logo stencil.

Nice Work Guys!

Someone needs to write up a briefing on this so the rest of the poor bastards that stumble across this monstrosity of a thread don't snap their brains in half trying to follow the in's-and-out's of this saga. You know, a general overview of the 'how' and 'why', rather than forcing the average joe to swallow 'The Brothers Karamazov'!

Special thanks to Dave Larson for posting the pics. Please remember that the actual damascus blade is not in the photos. I will assemble it all upon Nick Wheeler's damascus blade after final coat of oil has cured well enough. Oh, and also - the screws in the photo are stainless. The gold screws Dan Gray supplied will be used on the damascus blade. I don't use the gold screws when working on the handle.

Okay, Jay Maines is still on the team to make the killer sheath for this baby. I am shipping to Dan Gray next week. Currently I am applying microscopic coats of tung oil to the ivory to help in moisture protection. One coat per about 24 hours so it will be a few days yet but it all goes out to Dan one day next week. Dan will be shipping directly to Jay Maines after he does something with the bolsters(?). Pop is ready to make the display case so I have asked Jay to ship back to me after he makes the sheath (I bet this is going to be one hell-of-a sheath he makes). Pop will make the case and I am not sure but it seems like it all should go to Bruce Bump for etching after that. If anyone has any other ideas as where it should next go please advise.

Pop is returning the bolo to me next week. I will shipping it along with the knife so that it should travel with the knife where ever the knife goes to from here on. That way all can enjoy it as well. Pop has told me that he sees no good way of incorporating it within the case. If anyone has any objection to that and a idea please advise. Upon Pop finishing the case the whole ball of wax, case, bolo, knife and sheath should ship together wherever it goes.

I am very pleased with how it is all turning out and I only wish I could (or would) have been less tardy on my end.

:D Man you're right! At one time Dan Gray had a page for this project on his site but I couldn't spot it right off. Dan! Hep me!

Edit: Okay I found it: Collaboration

Edited again: Man I just read over Dan's run through of the project real quick and I'm so freakin impressed! I still think I'm going to push hard for the winning bid on this baby... :D

COOL
hehehe
you guys wait if you think that's nice..
when it's all together that will be kick a$$.. being a take down, the spine of the Damascus blade
is razed just above the jade and bolsters, sorta a 3D look on a 3D piece :D

Roger . is your dad still going to make the draw for the paper work on it?
if so he could make it big enough to accommodate the Bolo too?

Bruce B , are you going to finish the etch on the blade after / during your job on it?
just a thought.. after it's finished, what do you say to using some of the past wax on it? that stuff seems to make a very nice finish on Damascus..
have you tried that?? turtle wax has a high end paste that should work real nice, The name escapes me right now..
renaissance wax I think will do the same..

Dan I think I am to put the logo on and acid etch the blade. I could also sharpen the edge. I think Nick Wheeler is a working man now and may not do it. I plan to mirror polish the blade and then etch the logo on, resist the logo and finally etch the blade. That way the logo will appear to be chrome like and really stand out. The etched blade will get a nice satin and protected with wax.

Just a lil update: all is well. Still applyimg ultra thin coats of oil to ivory, front and back. Just a few more days now (about 24 hours between coats). Pix of knife on actual damascus blade before shipping to Dan Gray.

Thanks Bruce that was what I was looking for..
the wax thing was told to me by a great maker now gone but what a finish on damacus when done in layered coats..in a nice finish..

I'm sure you know this anyway ... this is just for guys that have not and want the know on it..:)

I agree on you doing the edge. I'm sure Nick has better things to do..the steel was the big part..

Roger, does or will the tung oil load the bark? just wondering I've not heard of it used on Ivory?
I known some oils coat and dry and some soak and stay wet....

also I'm not sure if you said you were doing the back of the ivory also?

Dan, the oil did not penetrate the ivory at all or much if any and especially not the bark. I was attentive though in getting it (oil) onto all areas of bark surface and before that had sealed any natural ivory cracks with lock-tite. I believe this ivory is solid now and protected rather well. I have only applied three ultra thin coats to the bark but am coating the back side and dovetails with as many coats as reasonable time permits. This oil will not give a gloss to the ivory and its major purpose is to help protect from moisture. A warning to all us (I have learned this): any machine buffing will remove the tung oil coats. I am anxious to get this assembled onto the damascus blade but dare not until properly cured and I do want to apply at least one more coat to the back and dovetails of ivory. So, it looks like very late Friday at earliest before I assemble and will probably wait til Saturday for that. As usual I run behind my expected schedule but pix will be posted this weekend and all goes out to Dan first part of week.

Dan, who's in charge of making the Certificate of Origin? I think its Dan Koster(?). Its time to start giving serious thought to the layout. It would be best if we can keep it to a standard 8 1/2 by 11 inches. Any larger is going to really be pushing case size. Dan Koster is it you that is doing the Cert.? I thought I remembered it was(?).

Pictures this Sunday evening (today) of the assembled knife on the actual damascus blade.

Yes - that's me. I'll be happy to start on it. Anybody who wants to make suggestions on what it should look like...time to speak up.

I am also down for the photography of the finished knife. I'd like to include a good pic of the knife on the certificate - will need to wait until completion to get that.

Other than that...all suggestions are welcome.

Dan, speaking only for myself, I have complete confidence on your descisions concerning the Cert.. A pix would be nice if you decide so. Yes, go ahead and get started on your preliminary layout and plans for this. It will be of importance I believe to contact Dan Gray for a list of makers and their areas within this effort. It might be good to verify within this thread their responsibilties before putting to pen. It all should go relatively fast from hense forth (relatively speaking).

Please any other comments by us makers say now for Dan's benefit.
