Who Would Be Interested In Doing A Collaboration Classic Hunter With Me??

I sent Dan K. the first and last names of all makers and directed him to where he could find the individual assignments for each. RL

RL-

It is green with black in it. If I remember it is Siberian Nephrite Jade. I use silicon carbide belts to shape it. Just let me know. Here is a pic:

GOOD LORD! What a beauty you did there! Silicon carbide uh? I wonder if I can get those in 2 X 48? What's your source for the belts?

7mm, to be honest with you I think we've kinda gotten our taste buds set on cobalt blue. I will say this: your's is just fine with me. Let me run this by John and have him see your great picture. I want to say yes. John has offered to purchase cobalt blue and I hate for him to have to do that if not necessary.

I also hope the rest of the team weighs in on this.

HEY! Laredo7mm offered some mokume too!

hmmmm....

knifeproject6.jpg

That'd give you 4 patterns

Damascus
Jade
Ivory
Mokume

Well the jade will be subtle. OK 3 patterns.

Maybe that would be too busy. Yeah I suppose so. The eye needs a place to rest. As much as I like Laredo's mokume it might be too much.

Never mind - just send the mokume to me please,

Steve

Laredo -- man, I never get tired of seeing that knife!

I hope you don't mind, but I sabotaged you pic to do a little comparison.

It doesn't matter to me which jade we use, but I took the pic of ivory and put it over Laredo's jade to see what they look like together. I gotta say, they look pretty sexy.

I get my belts from here:

http://www.geocities.com/discount_abrasives/index.html

Good prices, they should have 2 x 48. I got my 2 x 60 for around a $1.50 a piece.

I can do straight laminate mokume like in the picture above which turns out to be very subtle. Or I can throw a pattern in it.

Either way, the offer is on the table. I am sure that the knife will look great no matter what. Just let me know, I am more than happy to help.

I want Bruce to have final on all this new stuff. The mokume is just fine but I got sold on the cobalt blue. John, of course, is a big factor on the jade because it's his baby. Without him we wouldn't have thought of it in the early stages. I want Bruce to be final on the jade too. Which ever, cobalt or green, John does the jade cutting and drilling.

This is the kind of problems I LIKE!! RL

EDIT: One important thing too, if he makes the mokume we don't have any more room on the steel for another maker's name. One more and I don't think we'll have room to hone an edge.

ANOTHER: As for jade bolsters I think we should fall back to what Bruce advised us against doing. I say it best to only us jade liners on this knife. Dan has already posted here that he has not yet worked jade. That stuff is damn hard-hard. Trying to get a level grind of jade bolsters and ivory - well, you're going to get dips in the ivory where it mates with the jade.

Hey, don't take this the wrong way, but I would prefer not to have my nameon the blade if you chose to use my mokume. It is one of those wierd quirks I have, kinda hard to explain, but just the way I am. Not really comfortable with my name "in lights." So if you go with some of my mokume, don't worry about the name thing.

Anyway, the jade is here if you need it. And it won't take me long to make up some mokume if you decide to go that way. Just shoot me an email if you need anything.

Can't wait to see the pictures of this one completed.

Sorry I was in the shop and watching Oprah all day. You guys are making huge strides in progress. I like everything Ive seen and I say go for it! The offer from Laredo on the mocume is fine with me if you all like it. We hadnt decided yet on the bolster material yet anyway. It would look classy with the blade blueing and gold names. I presume changing the Fowler ricasso to a little bitty one is acceptable? I could just put last names on the ricasso if there are any negative feed back on putting them on the blade. I really do like that last pic with the small ricasso though.

Okay. The way I read Bruce is we go with 7mm's mokume and John's cobalt blue jade. I will ask John to go with his blue (somebody tell me what 7mm's real name is please).

I say standard ricasso and put first and last names on blade (first initial and last name if Bruce deems essential).

The final profile specified today is solid and WILL BE IT. Michael, Steve, go with what I agreed with before Bruce signed off on it(standard ricasso, names go on blade).

All that is settled.

7mm, make us some mokume for front and back bolsters. Dan Gray is the handle man and you can email him or him you. You know what you're doing. Just make enough for front and back bolsters for a hunter size knife. And thank you again. I got to try to figure something but at the least you will be on the certiicate of origin. Maybe Bruce can help me on that problem. I know, I read your post concerning that. We'll work it out to your satisfaction.
ADDENDUM: 7mm, please ship your mokume directly to Dan Gray.

Laredo, those are very generous offers and a great idea! I like very much your idea of your mokume, and I think it will really cap things off very nicely. Your green jade looks better than I thought. It matches very well the ivory, and the overlay show it very well, too. I'll leave it up to you fellows about the jade color. I'm also releived we are probably going with the mokume instead of jade for bolsters because of the danger of easily breaking jade bolsters if dropped. We of course know liners would be pretty well protected by the ivory. Thanks, guys.

It is decided. Liners will be John's cobalt blue. Laredo's mokume and the other materials will compliment beautifully. RL

I fully agree! Roger would you email Nick with the damascus order? We are ready to roll. Good job Men! Whew!

Bruce, you just took a ton of weight off me with your vote of confidence. I was feeling myself a butt wipe of late. Someone has to be. It is remarkable how timing works sometimes. I was just signing on to post a message that I had already emailed Nick with the specs and asked him to look at Michael and Steve's color pics too. I think we are rolling now. John and I have within minutes ago communicated about the liners. AND YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY CORRECT. THEY HAVE BEEN AT IT SOME KIND OF HARD. I am very proud of this fine team that has allowed me to associate myself with.

This thing might just become a knife. Hope it keeps an edge! Hey, who said that?

RL

Roger, YOU the MAN! And you still have your great sense of humor! "Whew!" is right! You carried the big load, fella.

That will work for me. What kind do you want? Just straight laminate or do you want a pattern in it? I really like the effect the straight laminate had on the cable fighter. But it is up to you guys.

I can do a twist (star pattern) or a ladder pattern or try to do a traditional wood grain pattern. The patterns are a bit tricky but no big deal.

When would you all need this by? I can have the straight laminate done and shipped by Monday and the other probably a few days after that.

Thanks for letting me help.

Edited to add: Forgot to tell ya, my real name is Sean Couch

Hey Laredo, I asked Steve Sando to help you decide that. He's been doing some great computer work with our drawings and should be able to help you make a nice choice. Roger
