There was clearly an issue with the limited edition ones, really a pity considering my perfect experience with (outsourced manufacturer) Lion Steel's production quality.
Now, luckily I don't have the limited one but I have one of the normal production models and there is nothing wrong with it, it is a tough yet still relatively compact folder, made with with nice attention to detail - inline with my previous Lion Steel experience.
That's what I didn't/don't get. I don't remember seeing any problems posted about f&f or design oversights with the SR-1, so why were there so many with the HESTF?
What the hell?!?! It keeps getting worse and worse. Safe to say the blade being that close to spine is something that hasn't been remedied?i think there was a rush to get it to the consumer after it was promised by a specific date in the subforum.
the sr-1 took about a year to get to the market once it was announced. i'm guessing the actual project lasted about 2 years. there have been issues, mainly with lock slippage, but overall complaints have been minimal.
with the hest, a guy who basically knows nothing about knives was a major part of the design process. that combined with a rushed production, it appears some design elements weren't thoroughly considered.
eg, the tips were exposed on the initial run. two possible corrections were proposed. first, a smaller stop pin, which would allow the blade to seat deeper within the scales. second, polishing the part of the blade that rests against the stop pin allows for the same thing. however, this puts the portion of the edge nearest the choil to sit danger close to the spine. so, really, both solutions created another problem.
i don't have terribly meaty hands or fingers, but i could easily get both to touch the edge via the spine. if one were to grip the knife tightly to use the window punch, the result could easily be a few stitches. the edge comes within about 2mm of the spine.
they could have added a longer backspacer to the "proud tip" problem, though it would have been costly because of the limited space with which to work.
another solution would have been to lengthen the blade a couple millimeters and drop the point to conceal the tip, there is quite (relatively) a bit of extra space forward of the tip when the knife is closed. though this would have been far more costly.
Does anyone have something good to say about it?
See my post #24. When reading others' experiences in this thread I sometimes get the feeling that I am having a different knife. May be I am just lucky, I don't know...
Just pick up a 0551 on the forum. Or wait for the 0550 to be out. I know it's not a hest but safer bet I'm thinking man.
Don't know who Gianni is, but was there ever a timetable given for the second run and these new changes? The knife has a great amount of potential, but there are several issues that need to be fixed.
Step one, is getting the maker and distributor to admit that these problems exist. Step two is to fix them.
Step one has been fairly difficult.
The blade is close to the back of the handle when closed, but I dont see how a person would get much more than a cut similar to a paper cut from it. The tip issue can be fixed a few ways, all fairly simple CNC adjustments. The lock is where the major fault is, and I still say that it is too far back/under the pivot to be truly effective, as I can watch the lockbar lever towards the back of the knife when pressure is applied to the spine when open. I think the handle needs to be widened out, but that is only my (non-knife designer) opinion.
Gianni has stated that there are several changes with the second run of them, and I hope that these issues are taken care of with that, and hopefully that takes care of my stupid little "step 1".
One of the more annoying things about the whole ordeal is still the people that comment on them, give their worthless opinions of them, and have never, ever even handled one.

Gianni is the owner of lionsteel who manufactures the hest folder. as for a timetable. Nope.

There is pretty much all the information that has been released.
He is referring to Gianni Lion of Lion Steel knifes. The company that is making the hest folder.
I really like the knife also, and there is something that keeps drawing me to it. I sold the 2nd one I received from DPX and now regretting it. As I badly want another one.
Looking forward to the LionSpy - I'll bet a Franklin that knife will come out great because of the two collaborating entities and the combined reputation they have . . . I have one on order now . . .
Whats that??
