Why buy a 600$$ knife ?

Well, barring their advice, here's mine: find the right woman.

We're celebrating 9 years this year, and she's as big a fan of my knife collection as I am. My trip to Blade this year? She's already budgeted for it before I even asked about it*. I daresay I've got a keeper.

*This is just one of the countless ways in which she's awesome.

I think we are having a tad of Thread Drift but I agree wholeheartedly! It's not just getting married or again, its whom you are Married/Marrying! to!

Sorry your choices didn't work out for you guys. it doesn't mean that there are Awesome women out there.:)

And I make. sell and on occasion buy $600.00 Plus knives.;)

I used to wonder why spend more but that in it the bullet and got my first strider a $400.00 dollar SJ75 and from that point I was hooked.
Since then I've had a hard time getting interested in most production knives.
I like the higher end ones because it's a different feeling they don't feel like they are a dime a dozen I'm aware there are hundreds probably thousands out in the wild but it's different.
Plus there's the obvious upgrade in materials fit and finish and all that.

Because every time I pull out my Sebenza or Umnumzaan to cut something, that sense of satisfaction and appreciation comes back. It's like a constant little reminder of perfection and a pleasure to use versus when I cut something with a box cutter that leaves you with only a task

Edit: allbeit, neither are $600 knives, I can imagine it's similar for some

I'm perfectly happy with Benchmade's and Spyderco's----$600 knife? oh hell no

When I get into that territory--I'm currently looking at a Benelli M2 and Colt 1911----even though they both cost more than $600

Corvette, Wilson combat 1911, Rolex, Expensive wine, staying at the four seasons, Prada bags, 18 year Scotch, etc etc.... If you can afford it and enjoy....have at it!!!

yeah i find spydercos and benchmades to be enough, i buy expensive knives and i still prefer the regular production spydercos more

Why would I wanna buy a sebenza etc..., or a strider?

If you want a knife to cut stuff, then stick with <$120, or better yet <$70. If you like bling, or imaging yourself trapped behind enemy lines, then go with the Sebenza or Strider. Sebenzas and Striders do not cut stuff better than sub-$100 knives. I know this to be true, because I once cut an apple with a Delica and a Sebenza. I then asked the apple which knife cut better, and the apple couldn't tell the difference.

So in general what makes those knives be worth that

They are not objectively worth the cost. They may be subjectively worth it to you if the fun you get from owning one exceeds the fun you get from having $450 in your pocket.

This is not hyperbolic. Its just the truth.

Why buy a $600 knife? Because I feel like it. No other justification is necessary.

Yep.

I have a bunch of <$200 knives and am currently looking at a $1000 knife. My plan is to keep it and only one ~$150 knife, and just decide which one to carry that day based on my plans. A day working on the wood pile or camping, I'll take the cheaper one and feel no guilt for using it to pry and hack. The nice one comes to work with me and lives a life of leisure cutting envelopes and tape on boxes. :D

It all depends what you want to spend your money on.

Lots of not-so-rich people will not hesitate to blow $200 or more for a night out on the town. So maybe a couple of nights on the town = a plain jane large Sebenza.

A lot of people drink Starbucks coffee every day. Say you spend $5 a day there (in reality, it would probably be more). In 10 weeks you've spent $350. The same as a small plain jane Sebenza.

Not saying everybody should buy a Sebenza or any other high-end knife. But the cost is not so ridiculous if you think about it like this.

I actually bought my 1st nice knife (small sebenza bocote) because I quit smoking cigarettes.
Cigarettes cost me $43,800 in my 20 years of smoking. The sebenza was between 400 to 500. A dent in the cost of cigarettes. I'm sure the sebenza would easily outlast 20 years as long as I don't lose it.

Why buy a nice car? No real reason except you like it and can afford it. If you like watches you may own expensive watches. Do they work better or tell time more accurately then a $35 timex? Most likely not. But you get it cause you like it and want it. No real reason.

I would not spend $200 for a hammer. It's just a hammer after all. I have hammers. They're in a tool box with other tools. But I'm not a cabinet maker. I'm not a Farrier. I don't create fine furniture. For those craftsmen who do, a $200 hammer is considered inexpensive.
Knives are the same for many here. Need verses Desire. Tool verses Instrument. Utility or Art? For your needs perhaps it's just a knife. As one gets into knife collecting as opposed to knife usage the price can be breathtaking. The old add age applies here as well; as long as there is a consumer there will be a product to consume. Nonetheless all that glitters is not gold. Not all expensive knives are "better" than their lower priced counterparts just as not all under priced knives are poor quality.
In my own circumstances I do own some expensive knives but because of there price tag I don't use them as an everyday tool. Perhaps in retrospect then why own them?

Just looking at the cost of a few things from my life right now:

House - 500,000K
Car - 47,000
Phone - 800-1,000

Yep, that $600 knife is looking pretty cheap right now LOL. Any blade at that price point will basically last until the end of time unlike the other three items I listed.

That is for sure and for certain. Well said.

Thank you.

It's crazy if you start to add up costs of things like insurance, gas, etc. etc...

I'd much rather put that money into knives LOL.:D:D:D Now to figure out a way on how to do that is another thing entirely.

Because $600 isn't that much money for a lifetime of use. Especially if you pass it down to your kids.
