why do the heavy duty bk knives come with such slippery handles?

The BK2 is equivalent to the Esee 5. Both awesome tools. And both have weaknesses based on who uses them. There is just no way everyone who purchases either feel the same about the ergonomics. I have heard about the handles being slick on the BK2, from many reviews, but if that is the case, change them out. This said, I have also heard complaints about the Esee 5 handles being to thick, and that they do not provide the same comfort for chopping in the pommel area.

if all comes down to individual preference, Both knives here albeit similar in many ways, have different pros and cons depending on the end user:):)

Well, I must say that Proton has convinced me. I just cannot argue with his superior logic and obvious experience with Becker knives. He's had a BK 10 for a whole day. I only have three 9s, a 10, a 5, a 15, a 14, a 17, a 16, and a Reinhardt Kukri. And I have only been using Becker handles for four or five years without modification. I have bought two sets of micarta scales, which I immediately sanded to make smoother, so I obviously have no right to question Proton's opinions.

Furthermore, all the times I have enjoyed camping on Ethan Becker's property, eating copious amounts of delicious food served from his kitchen and campfire, and having free reign to use any of the tools or equipment in his shop, I never realized just how greedy the man was. Proton has opened my eyes. I now declare that I will never again attend a Becker gathering and enjoy the fabled hospitality of Half Moon Ridge. I just cannot condone Mr. Becker's excessive greed.

Also, I will be selling all my Becker knives. And I recommend that everyone else do the same. Use the money to buy some rubber handle bear grills knives that are not a public safety hazard.

Oh, and you should also get rid of all smooth handled knives made by custom knife makers. I can think of numerous custom makers that sell smooth handles off the top of my head: TM Hunt, Chris Reeve, Bob Dozier, Blind Horse, Fiddleback Forge, etc, etc, and many more. These people apparently have no regard for public safety and are slaves to their own greedy agendas. I say we boycott them all.

Additionally, I can no longer in good conscience support or associate with Bladeforums or any other entity that promotes hazardous smooth handled knives. Goodbye.

(Obvious sarcasm is obvious)

Why did I read this whole thread?

Ughhh...
This was brutal.

Understand this proton: Ethan Becker is about as close to a saint in the knife industry as you'll ever find.
To cast any blame on him for a "greedy" design is just not right. It's uninformed and ignorant.
You just barged through his front door and started making foul accusations.
Bad form sir...
There were many ways to get your "point" across. You chose a bad way to go about it.

I have said this before, and I am sure I will say it again. Beckers have great feel in the hand and do not slip because of their shape, not their texture. The handles are great in different hand holds and don't require a really tight grip to remain in control.

The same goes for axes, shovels, scythes, and other "heavy duty" tools. To much grip added to the handles usually leads to sore hands and or blisters.

If the company rubs you the wrong way and seems shady why the f&@k do you buy the knives ? Or did someone throw one and it landed under your bridge?

How do you plan on smashing through every discarded appliance and piece of scrap wood in your path if you can't even keep hold of your own knife, proton? Maybe you should do less reps of fake work at the gym and spend more time using a chopping tool.

ok it is like this. i have a knife in front of me and i like 95% of it while the other 5% of it i hate.

he already admitted that he doesn't even own a bk2 but apparently its identical to a bk10 so he's good to go

i use bk2 and bk10 interchangeably don't you know ;D

the BK handle design has been around for DECADES, and i suspect is older than the OP by a fair margin

if you read the thread carefully you would know that i do not have a problem holding my knife. it is those of minimal strength that would have a problem holding the knife and this would endanger everyone in the radius of the one with minimal strength including him/herself.

Kiss off,

You have been reported to the mods for being disruptive. You will not make it until morning Azz

with that attitude, neither will you.

by which i mean, y'all need to calm waaaaaay down.

i'm going to go lift 200 lbs of rock at a time, up and down, for a couple hours. that's a 1000 sets? :D

moved over 2000 lbs of rock and demo up hill both ways, i appreciate my work gloves (Ethan likes his gloves too).

Becker handles are wondrous, esp if you are wearing gloves.

i don't preach what i don't practice, i live it

Pure speculation.
However, if it's peace of mind you're after... utilize some common sense and don't give a BK-2 (admittedly a tank of a knife) to a child or to the weak-gripped.
Problem solved.

Or... just give him/her the 2 and watch the fireworks fly. Either way. :p

there is no age limitations to buying a bk knife online. a 10 year old girl could buy one.

There is an 18 year age requirement, which is stupid. There should be no age requirement.

So what you are saying is that no knife that shouldn't be handled by a 10 year old should be legal?

What about an 11 year old?

What about children's parents? Last I knew most 10 year old don't have credit cards.

But shouldn't you worry less about what 10 year old can get, and more about parental responsibility?

Should a full grown man who spends every day lifting weights be worried about what knives a ten year old can handle?

Do you realize that there is no purchasing regulations on dumbells?
A ten year old could just go buy a 40 lbs dumbell and drop it on someone's face, killing them.

Why is public safety even coming up here!? On a knife forum!?
