Why Lynn Thompson Rules!

I used to really like Cold Steel knives---that is, until I started doing some real heavy camping this summer in the back-country in New Mexico and a couple fell apart on me (cough, cough, Scimitar, cough, Ti-Lite, cough, etc., cough). The only quality folders they have are the Voyager series---I love the X2---and the Ultimate Hunter. The old Shinobus are really great too. I've been thinking about getting a Triple Action but I don't want to get screwed. IMHO, quality is hit or miss, I don't know Lynn but his business moves don't make me happy, and the customer service department SUCKS. That's my summary. I've gotta give him props for the DVDs though.

im sorry but a scimitar and a ti-lite are the worst possible choices for camping period. they aren't for camping they are for selfe defence, you probably should have just got an actual camp knife.....

-Wannabemarine:
Yes, these are the absolute worst choices for camp knives; their designs are not open, their blades are thin and hollow ground with no belly, and they're folders so the holdup for the really rough stuff is questionable. I should have mentioned that I took them along to test out on some cutting; they weren't used for big things as I had a Spyderco Temperance PE that handled most of the chores; they went bust doing some whittling, cutting parachute cord, and other miscellaneous chores a normal pocket knife is used for. They were not used to, say, cut down a small pine tree or anything of that nature. I took along a lot of new blades to test out and mess around with, not to function as my primary camp knife---always a Spyderco for that (Military, Temperance, Lil' Temperance, etc.). Sorry I didn't make that clear earlier. Both knives had a surprising amount of blade play and the tips dulled real easily; the Teflon finish on the Scimitar also wore out quick for as little real cutting it did. For the record, they also did some cutting on cardboard and letters around the house---still, nothing to justify such a fast rate of ware. If I were to use a Cold Steel as a camp knife, I would probably take my X2 just due to the fact it's big, sharp, and reliable, and has a wide, utilitarian blade. Again, sorry about the mix-up. God bless you and America.

-P.S.: Anybody ever had any experiences with a Triple Action...been thinking about getting one...thanks...

-LJK:
He certainly is no Sal Glesser. I've never met a man in the industry quite like him; he's a helluva guy. No one else gets the online opinion of everybody on their late models and communicates with his customers like he does.

Glesser for Pres. '08 "A chicken in every pot, a Spyderco in every hand"
If you don't visit the Spyderco forums, you wouldn't know. :)

Wait a minute, maybe LT does rule... Hmmmm...

I'm practicing my acting skills. How did my inflection sound?

Got another brain teaser for you:

CS's owner doesn't have integrity issues, Strider's past matters, Does S30V chip, What's the best way to test a knife and what's the best SD fighting martial arts system?

Name the only knife company to actually pay royalties to Sal Glesser for the use of pocket clips on their folding knives?

Name anyone whose past doesn't matter; especially if that past is used to advertize products.

Name a steel that doesn't chip. I've chipped S7 and bainite 5160.

Shuttlejutsu - The art of being three galaxies away on a space shuttle when bad things happen (being stalked by an astronaut notwithstanding).

Frost Cutlery?

Well,

Having popped into this thread this morning just to see how it was going after a week, I see the entertainment value is at least still pretty high:D

love cold steel products, most bang for buck I've found.
Meet LT two years ago, likable guy, supporter of our troops.
to steelscout30 have a triple action that I keep in my Dojo, fun to play with but not a knife that I would Carrie or depend on. The handle is thin soft aluminum just feels cheep, but as I said fun to play with.
The person LT referred to as "convicted felon posing as an elite military operator" now HE is offensive. My service was long and Honorable and I can prove it. I realty hate posers.

Jill don't worry about some of the morally "high ground" we have here.
I don't like LT's practices but I do like the one knife I bought from his company.
Funny how some people will by generic cola because it is cheaper then coke, or generic drugs as already mentioned then slam a knife company for doing similiar.
To me these people seem to be morally flexable and it doesn't matter how you phrase it or try to explain it they will be able to justify their opinions to themselves.
I have yet to meet the person who in their everyday life only buys name brand products that were responsible for introducing a given product into the marketplace.
However people that choose not to buy CS or Strider products (to name but two) because of their own personal code are no more or less wrong then those that do not agree with them

I wish the green and red chiclets were still around. That's one green-chiclet post.

Sure I took generic amoxicillin for my bacterial pneumonia, but that was just my life. These knives are more important than that! Store brand ketchup is for people with questionable ethics.

That said, I like round holes to have Spyderco's knife or one licensed by Spyderco to use that trademark around them and only like assisted opening knives from Kershaw.

I'd further like to point out, though, that generic meds generally don't appear until patents expire or they're licensed. Intellectual property rights fuel innovation and disregarding them leads to stagnation insofar as inventions are concerned. Until every disease can be cured and process improved (with mutations for diseases and definitions of improvement, that's never), IP rights should be respected. And with the pocketclip royalties issue, our LT has been infinitely more respectful than most. With the G.I. Tanto, he's been a smartbutt*.

* = credit to cdixon for that cool term.

I don't really care what Lynn does. When he started pushing his line of knives back in the mid 1980's there really wasn't a lot of decent blades to be had. If nothing else I think he was a major player in knife companies becoming aware that there was a huge market for out of the box, razor sharp, decent knives. My Dad tells me back in the 60's, 70's and into the 80's a knife that would shave hair was a big deal. Hardly any did out of the box and many wouldn't take much of an edge anyway. A locking blade was only offered on a very few.(look at the folding hunters back then two blades no lockup, how many closed on fingers while dressing game?) Now look at how far knives have came! Locking blades are the norm as well as better steel razor sharp out the box.
