Why not Strider??

A recent thread asked what knives you would never buy. Strider was mentioned frequently and the resons did not seem to be because it is an inferior product. Many people are willing to spend $250-$350 on a Dozier or Busse which are also production knives, why not a Strider. I have tried to find out some info about Stider products and most owners seemed happy with the purchase. Any insight would be appreciated. I am in the market for a strong EDC and there are some Striders that fit the bill. Thanks.

Buy what you want. Why should you care what others think since you are spending your money?

Lots of people don't like Strider Knives because of the owners, some complain about the cost -but there sure seem to be plenty of interested buyers to justify their cost.

Look, all knives in this price range, made by known brands are going to hold up to whatever you do with the knife.

Once upon a time there was an owner, Mick
who told stories of pride, glory, but was just a prick
A tough as nails guy he claimed to be
but that was lies to boost his company
Once out in the open, he thrashed and rebelled
Called the almighty spark names like "he smelled"
Chose to walk out after his free stay
so now he be unwelcome, his prices we do not pay :D

True story, rhyming is mine though. They do put out a good chunk of steel (the folders at least), but everyone and their grandmothers dog agrees that they are about $100 more than they should be.

I hope this helps, J.

edit: ps, they also send out knives with horror stories of wobbling blades, and/or bad lockups. For $400+ a knife better be damn near perfect.

It seems Mick Strider is an ex-felon (armed car-jacking) who lied substantialy about his past to sell knives. Strider was never ex-special forces although his adcopy says he was, he wasn't discharged for medical reasons-in fact, he went AWOL and was discharged a couple weeks later (spent 11 months in the military), lied about jumping out of planes, lied about just about everything having to do with his past, etc. etc. etc.

Duane Dwyer, co-owner of Strider knives, is by all accounts a good guy and truly hardcore.

In the end, buy what you want...it's your money.

Sorry J. Nice ryhming, but you got all tne facts wrong.:p

Mick never claimed to be a Sniper. That was Duane. Mick also never got the boot. He threw a tantrum and Spark closed his forum at his request. He's still a member here, he just doesn't post.

LOL, oops, that was the story I heard and I'm sticking to it :D

Edited to match the paul harvey version, so now you know the rest of the story

Also wrong. Dwyer has been outed too. He was a Marine, but worked as a data tech. His hardcore scout sniper stories are fantasy.

apparently a sociopath [I read the Mick Strider threads]. I thought about getting a Strider knife once, but that ain't gonna happen now.

I have never owned a fixed blade with such a thick piece of S30V stock, my Paramilitary works just fine. Is there a chipping problem that I have read about from time to time? I care about that. I don't know the people who make the knife. I have worked for companies where the owners were less then honest and I have bought plenty of products from unscrulpulous companies, usually unaware, so I can't make any judgements about a product based on poor business ethics. Everytime you buy a Chinese product you can be sure an under-aged and/or an underpaid employee was involved. I try not to buy that stuff but sometimes its impossible. As long as Strider employs Americans making an American product and paying fair wages, i'll buy the product as long as that product functions the way it should.

Why not take that analysis one step further and support Americans who didn't lie to get ahead? There are plenty of guys out there who make incredible blades who don't also traffic in bullshit.

It's been said in many other threads, one of the beat alternatives to Strider knives is the ZT series. I own a 0205 and couldn't be happier. Extremely heavy duty, great f&f, fantastic ergonomics and a whole lot less $$$$.:D

I owned a Strider SNG and a ZT 0301.
Both very good knives, the SNG is a lot lighter and smaller but still very tough.

Sold both but i'm considering to rebuy the ZT, more knife for your money.

I've read all of Micks rantings and ravings here, I've read all about his past. Faking military service is sad, but in the end not a big deal in the least. I don't have any more or less respect for someone who served than someone who didn't, so lying about it doesn't really matter much to me. I think it's a sad, sad person who has to make their entire life a lie, but I don't care in the end.

The reason I don't like Strider is that I think most of the designs look like bricks with blades. But at the same time, Spyderco makes some ugly knives and I love Spyderco. But the few Striders that I've handled felt like bricks with blades in my hand. So that turned me off.

If some day Strider makes a knife that has decent ergos in my hand, and doesn't cost about $200 more than it's worth, I'd consider buying one. But I don't think that's gonna happen.

There is nothing inherently inferior about the Strider products. If a particular Strider knife has the characteristics you desire, and you feel that it is an acceptable value, then buy it.

There is no valid reason for you to boycott Strider on the basis of other people's chest-beating; either for or against Strider.

I boycotted Strider and BRK for awhile and then realized I have done some shady things in my life too and I am sure we all have including other knife makers. So I am of the camp of show some grace and if you personally have a bad experience, then forgive and learn and decide from there.

I'll take it from that statement you have not served in the Military. His story is an insult to those of us that have.

Don't care if someone that's trying to sell you something is lying skumbag who's pissing on the lives of real soldiers current and past, just to make a buck? I don't care if it's the best made knife on the planet, there are plenty of honest, good companies out there that I chose to support.

No I haven't. I think I worded that poorly too. I certainly respect those who have, but serving doesn't mean someone deserves more respect than someone who didn't.

I don't like the fact that Strider lied about his life. But a knife is a knife and if I like it, I'll give it a shot.

That said, if I liked the designs, his lies may be a turn off, I don't know. But coupled with the fact that the designs are a turn off, the lies don't seem to matter as much because I won't be buying one.

Here is all the information:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=453852

Other than that, I'm not particularly interested in them since the blade is thick and the substantial choil is a detriment to the cutting edge.

I believe Rick Hinderer, maker of the XM-18, was a firefighter but doesn't play it up. He is reputable and a great guy by all accounts I've heard.

For your consideration, although I'm not very knowledgable on the matter. :o

Just a note. ZT knives are a Strider collaberation. Mick and Duane still get paid when you choose a ZT over a Strider.
