Why Striders? (aka convince me to buy a sng strider)

I have a collection of folders that I really enjoy, and since getting both a Hinderer and a sebenza my pockets are happily full. And yet I still am eyeing an sng strider. Those who own one: what are they like? Do you end up carrying it for edc or is it more of a collection piece?

Some people like them, some don't.

I have two SnGs and like them a lot. On days I know I'm going to do crazy stuff with my knife - I'll pocket the SnG. They really are workhorses.

If you're a knife aficionado who loves Hinderers and CRK's and you are okay living with the short blade to body ratio, I recommend you get one and check it out for yourself.

PS: I prefer the Lego version as it fits my hand like a glove.

For me it is the best EDC out there. It just works for me. I love the blade shape and the handle to blade ratio make for a small blade with big knife capabilities. It is the only knife I would have a hard time living without. If it appeals to you try one out. There are a few configurations and finding the one you like best can make or break your experience with the knife.

I tell you I was on the fence
I got tons of spidies benchmades zt cs ect ect.

I convinced myself to try an smf ..................................

Now a strider has been in.my pocket for the last 2 months at work

If you get a nice example and you read what you might have to deal with as far as lock stick (it's not the end of the world) I think you might be happy.

If you want a super slicer. Get an opinel lol. But if you want a knife that can probably handle what ever (and if it doesn't it will get fixed ) then get a strider.

I had the smf for one.month before I said screw it.
Now I got 2 smf's one is my edc the other is cpm d2 so I'm saving it
I just picked up a SnG CC. A few days ago and this is a perfect edc size

Although I am smitten with the tank smf for work when I go out I take the sng too.

Also picked up a pt this thing is cute as hell feels like a toy knife too me :)

The biggest and MOST simple reason for me and the reason it bumped my zt 0452 and. Tad dauntless mk 4 CF out of my pocket iiiissssss (drumroll)

THE CLIP! THE PART WE ACTUALLY USE EVERYDAY
I have sprung and or mangled or, in spydercos frn's case broke off every clip I have ever used.
Mind you I work construction. So there are snags every where including my fall harness lol.

BUT THIS IS IS IS THE REASON I HAVE CHANGED.

After that other qualities show themselves like when you normally would roll or chip you spidie or benchmade. The strider laughs at it. True it won't be your go to food prep

But you can cut your sandwich in half. Then pry a 2x4 over lol

I'm still going to get a smf in dgg and at least one or 2 preformance series as my gentleman's knife :).

If it helps you I. NEVER get rid of knives by choice. Once I buy them I use them so I wouldn't get my money back if I bought them brand new anyways .

My point is I don't buy and sell. I buy and USE. And these are USERS

I do find myself carrying a second less tank.more slicey knife for when the smf is literally too much blade.

If you like em big and.meaty. go with smf.
If you want more of an all around edc size go for the sng to be honest the cutting edge size is about the same the handle is just bigger on the smf and the blade is THICK about 1/16 of an inch thicker then the sng.

Hope this helps.

Arrrg I just reread and saw you have hinderer and CRK. I would carry a small sebbie insingo for my slicey work and the smf for the tank :)

Also don't let the high quality of the CRK. Make the sng feel less refined it is not just a different knife. (If strider only had CRK quality control they would be king

Hey all,

Wondered if you guys could state your favorite sng configuration (steel, handle, etc). I think I'm convinced on one, but, there's a ton of options out there! Thanks all.

Get one and you will own one of the finest folder designs ever.
I like the Lego and I don't care which steel comes with the Strider because their HT is fantastic.

My favorite SNG configuration: Black PD-1 carpenter's steel blade, flame Ti lockside, orange lego G-10.

Also, +1 what Rolf said! ^

Good luck!

Well I had an SMF, just had to try one out of curiosity. I sold it after a month because I never had a Hinderer before either and really wanted one of the bowie grind XM-18s to try out. My opinion on the SMF is that it felt a little heavy in the pocket for EDC, But I really liked the overall design and blade shape.

I have a couple of crk (small seb and inkosi) and a hinderer xm18, however, a strider (smf or sng) is what I carry every day.

I think I like the smf more, I like how solid it feels, however, the sng is a great size and weight for edc. Both are great.

I have an s30v cc sng and a lego 154cm sng. The cc melts in the hand and the s30v is good. However, I prefer the lego in the hand, just feels grippy, filling and solid. I also like the 154 over the s30v due to its ease of sharpening and the fine edge it takes and holds. The s30v holds a good working edge longer, but loses that fine edge quickly in my experience.

I personally have mixed feelings about my Strider. It's a great looking knife with solid ergos and amazing heat treat. Strider has s30v perfected. Mine came razor sharp and responded well to stropping. While the knife is not a flipper, the detent was non existent and there was significant lock bar movement when cutting substantial items. I am going to keep the knife and carry it occasionally but I would not purchase another Strider.

The closest to what I like is the CC . I do modify mine to exactly what I like , which is CC lockside with a grippier customized or GG scale. This gives me the CC benefits as well as GG benefits and doesn't eat up my pockets. All the blade steels are great, but I am gravitating to the tool steels at the moment-not that I tax the knife hard enough to need them.
Lego(4.5oz) would be my 2nd choice , but it is just a touch heavier than the CC(4.2 oz.). The CC falls into my perfect EDC weight.
GG is the lightest(3.9oz), but is pretty hard on the pockets

I tried one out once..got it in a trade. Ended up selling it about 3 weeks later.
Yeah the pivot is strong, and I guess it's a tough knife overall..but...

The whole g10 handle/backspacer just felt cheap to me.
I hate the blade/handle ratio. It felt good enough in hand, but the choil is huge and I often ran out of blade when using it.
Lock stick. Serious lock stick.

Personally I'd give it a C+.

The warranty is amazing if you buy a strider and keep it stock they'll fix it for life .

Mick has a past he claimed to be something he wasn't . He's had judgments in courts forbidding him to make that claim anymore to sell knives . Mick also from my understanding does a lot for our military guys as far as donating knives etc. That's a personal choice you'll haft to make for yourself and doesn't effect the knife .

All things considered the SnG <correct way to always write SnG . Is a nice Edc . The blade is kind of thick and the blade is a little short but the egos are amazing . You have very precise control over a strider and they are tough.

I sold 4 striders in the last few months . Each one I thought had smooth amazing action and lockup.,and I'm used to strider BTW .

All 4 were great examples ,however all 4 I sold everyone the buyers ALL replied to me the knives had lock stick . Now I've owned maybe 10 strides overall and I'm used to them the 4 I sold seemed fine to me with no stick at all . Just goes to show how some people view them .

SnG....I wrote this in my longer post here it is shortened down its SnG .

Best I've owned have been the z-wear or pd-1 configurations . I like Lego SnGs . Like the action of stonewashed tI but the flamed seems to be grippier. Flamed shows wear though.

Strider makes the best EDC knives on the market period IMHO, their heat treat is impeccable and the ergos are amazing my SMF has been my EDC for the last four consecutive years. They once broken in are smooth as butter and have no lock stick but what do I know I have only had like 9 of them pass through my hands.
