Why the dislike for the wave feature?

It's really, really easy to pull the knife from your pocket without it opening. :)
On some models, you have to try really hard to get the wave to engage.

This.

I don't understand why people think just because you HAVE a waved knife you have to wave it open every time you use it.

I also don't understand the (mocking?) dismissal of it as only for fighting / "tactical" uses.

I find it useful for things like working on a ladder....pull knife out and it's open, close it and back in the pocket. Sure I could open almost any modern pocketknife one-handed but like virtually everything on most of the knives we buy it's a convenience (as is a thumb disk, lock, fancy steel, etc).

The dependence on pant fabric to function seems to me like a bad point, especially if you change pants and the fabric is looser or behaves differently.

Practice would loosen the fabric and make deployment less reliable, so this would actually discourage practice, but that is only my impression.

I don't mind a wave as an optional feature with an added thumb stud, or combined with a flipper, if it is not bulky.

Along those lines of thought, that some people would remove the assist feature on a flipper I find totally amazing... Because flippers can more easily defeat a strong detent, and a strong detent is safer, flippers are the only liner locks that I really like. If a flipper had a wave feature added it wouldn't be a deal breaker, depending on how bulky it is or how it looks, but a strong detent might get in the way of the wave feature working...

Can't. I'm a felon.

This should work for you.

Because when I'm behind enemy lines on secret covert op missions the *thrack* sound a waved knife makes when it opens can get me killed. That happened once to me in ..., err, never mind.

I have no use for the wave feature.

I love the Wave feature! It is super convenient. I really dislike how everyone thinks its meant only for fighting. I get great use out of the wave feature everyday.. never been in a fight and needed a knife and hope to never be in that situation! The wave also opens beers like a pro ;)

I'll echo the convenience... and I can take it out of my pocket (knife remaining closed) without a problem. It's just a feature... if you like it (or may think you'll like it), buy it. If not, skip it... there are some Emersons that do not have it (whether by design or limited run). I like it, and really like the knife it comes with ;)

The below is meant in a light hearted vein

To all the haters; stop with all the negative waves (see what I did there:D)!

I like the wave. Its fun and it works as advertised. Does what it 'says on the box.' No more, no less.

For the vast majority of us here on the forum, who dont engage in knife fights nor have any inclination to ever do so, the wave is fun and on occasion, the quick one handed opening even come in handy.

For the operators/those in harms way, the wave makes sense. Also for civilians workers being able to only have one hand free.

Emersons and Spyderco knives with the wave function are high quality and a blast to cut and slice with -wave or no wave- so indulge yourself.

Did I mention the wave was fun?

Yeah, but try opening your beer with one. ;)
Gun sights (or mags):D

I don't hate them, I just don't have any use for them. I don't rely on knives as weapons, and don't use them for my job, so speed of deployment isn't an issue for me.

There was a time when everything that folded got modified to wave. Since then, I've grown up and now carry a fixed blade.

In Massachusetts, the wave could conceivably be illegal according to cryptic wording of the relevant law. This could be another reason to add to the list

Correct.

Also , I find the "wave" to be incredibly ugly , gimmicky and a real pocket shredder.

Holes and studs for me , thanks.

I have always liked the wave on Emerson knives. I can take the knife out of my pocket with out using the wave feature.

I carry a blade because I live in California.
There is no state wide CCW

That too.

Steel toe boots and a bowie are as good as it gets for me.

I have no need for ultra fast tactical operator speed when preforming menial daily cutting tasks, and if I did need speed I'd just Cary one of my fixed blades. I also don't like wide bulky knives with things sticking out of them which to the best of my knowledge most waved knives are.
