Why the dislike for the wave feature?

Pretty neat but theres an even easyer way to open a beer with a gun

Nobody had a Bic lighter to open the beer?

In a related matter, that Kirkland beer is surprisingly delicious.

Oh, the wave? Naaah. I find it gimmicky and useless. Some folks like it though, some with a religious fervor. Good for them.

Kirkland bourbon was/is even better!

for me the problem with the wave is that i get a lot of failed openings. some knives wave better than others, and when it works its great because it eliminates the step of using your thumb to open the knife, but for self defense i wouldnt want to rely on it. i still buy knives with the wave if i like the design like the waved spydercos but i will change the pocket clip to make it tip down so the wave doesnt get used.

Not reliable and seems to open when not needed
Ugly
Tears up your pants
Emerson made it gimmicky (not an Emerson fan either)

I did enjoy watching Charlie Mike wave everything in sight years ago though.

I absolutely hate the term "mall Ninja" but every so often it just seems to fit...the wave feature is one of those times.

The premise behind the wave is not one of any real function (if we are really being serious about this topic)

Think flipper, is it necessary? Does it do anything measurably better than a thumbstud? Maybe for personal preference and for someone's fun factor, but that is all...

Wow, so much judgement over a way to open a knife...
Kind of reminds me of those who judge people for carrying a knife in the first place...

Ugly?

I think they're ugly. I also can't imagine needing the additional fraction of a second of opening speed that may exist as compared to any other opening method.

I'd be more fond of waved knives if it weren't for the fact that the quality control on the ones I owned wasn't very good. Lockup/wear issues and gritty pivots, no thanks. I still like my Emerson SOCFK, but it just feels like a toy next to my ZTs or Hinderer.

I know, right? And on a discussion forum of all places. The nerve of people!

There's discussion, and then there's being judgemental.
People are supposedly mall-ninja, knife-fighting fantasy dweebs because they own knives that open a certain way?
That's a load of horse crap 10 miles deep.

Just like the guys at the gun club who say "You don't need to own that revolver, that's just for shooting people...but my shotgun is useful, and I should be allowed to own it."
They're full of crap too. ;)

Couple thoughts related to what I've read here. . .

I am somewhat confused by those saying they don't want their knife to open when they take it out of their pocket.

???

Why on earth are you taking it out unless you're going to cut something? Why do you carry a knife?

???

Speaking only for myself, I use my knife to cut stuff, which can't happen with it inside my pocket.

In the event of simply setting it down on the counter, or handing it to someone safely, etc., a miniscule amount of common sense is all that is needed to accomplish an unopened draw from the pocket.

Also, for the record, I'm sick of the "tactical" mentality regarding waves (and everything else). It's dangerous, stupid, and boxes an inanimate, versatile tool into a dark corner. Marketers and consumers alike spout this bovine crap like skittles.

There are plenty of other reasons for a knife to open quickly and easily, none of which involve "combat," which is yet another nauseatingly misused and asinine label to put on a knife. Especially a folder, for Christ's sake.

Not to mention the disheartening plethora of misinformation and Kool-aid parroted by 99 percent of the people attempting to "educate" the Internet on the finer points of Self Defense. They are totally unthinking and unaware, yet have a devastating effect on those around them. Just like dead people.

Actual Self Defense and actual Combat are two entirely different things, with completely different goals, tactics, and consequences.

It is extremely fortunate that the real world need for bladeplay is virtually nonexistent to the average, aware, properly educated, law abiding citizen.

Many "gurus" would truly be in for a rude awakening.

Thx for listening.

Putting aside the fact that you answered your own question...

You state it just takes one additional simple step to prevent it from opening. I'd counter that it just takes one additional simple step to open it. What's the difference?

If you want your knife to open when you pull it from your pocket, then a "waved" knife is probably right for you.

I want the knife is out of my pocket and completely under my control before I open it, so a "waved" knife isn't for me.

Your way isn't wrong. But mine isn't either.

I guess self defense is different. I wouldn't use a weapon when engaged in mutual combat.

You don't want to hit the bottlecap with the bullet because that would break the glass. The better way is to blow the cap off with the muzzle blast.

I tend to use the caplifter on this instead:

Strange thread... who cares for the dislike of the wave if, in fact, you like it. I like it, it works for me, and I prefer my modern folder/edc has one (of some sort). And those who don't like the wave need not buy one... and we can all still be buddies. My edc is an Emerson Super 7, and most of the time--just about all of the time--I draw it without using the wave, open it via the thumb disk, use it, and put it back in my pocket. The few times I waved it for use (aside from the times it was waved for fun), my other hand was occupied and it was convenient to wave it... and it worked as advertised. I simply like it, and it's cool if you don't... we're still good.
