I was able to spend the last few days at the Hill People Gear Winter Skills Training gathering. I've hung out with the HPG folk during their summer gatherings for the last 3 years, but haven't been to one of their winter gatherings yet. This one was held at a camp above the town of Como in South Park (yes, that South Park) Colorado.
Looking from the Camp down into South Park. The mountains in the distance are the Tarryall Mountains. The pics I've posted in the past from the Lost Creek Wilderness are from that area:

Brrr:

Ken, one of the instructors with HPG going over self arrest techniques with different winter tools like ice axes and shovels:

Como is an old railroad town on the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad. The railroad shut down in 1937 and the town pretty much did as well. A few folks still live there, but it's basically become a ghost town.
The town of Como as viewed from the camp:

The train depot and hotel in Como. It's going through a restoration project and is on the National Register of Historic Places:

The railroad roundhouse was built in 1881:

The buildings in Como are a mix of old, rundown, abandoned and well maintained and occupied:

This one's for sale. I picked up a flyer if anyone's interested:

Highway 285 heading through South Park:

Looking down on South Park from Kenosha Pass:

It was a great weekend hanging out with some old friends and new and learning a bunch of new skills.
Thanks for looking.
