Will there be a 2017 forum knife?

If we go micarta, I agree with many so far that a pale shade (white, ivory, bone, etc) may look the best. I would also be excited for something (color or material) that hasn't been done yet. Since it's a sheepsfoot blade - is wool micarta possible?

+1 Snake skin maybe?

Charlie, that idea seems pretty sound. I'm happy to go with whatever you recommend.

Well canvas is woven material and hessian or burlap are woven so why not a woven wool blanket material ? I kinda like the idea but I'd like to view some samples first. It could work i reckon.

Living where I do in the Western Isles of Scotland, I could source Harris Tweed which I'm sure could be made into Micarta - (I had Evan make a custom for me with a yellow Harris tweed and some kind resin once when he first started out). Harris tweed is available in just about every kind of colour combination imaginable too. I'd be happy enough to do a bit of the leg work with that if it was logistically and financially possible.

For those wondering what it is; here's the website of one of the many small companies on Lewis producing Harris Tweed and tweed products;

Thanks for all the positive feedback!! We can't possibly please everyone, but hopefully this would be a desirable/usable knife.
what about micarta handles? any more opinions?

1095 handles cmon Charlie! ill take 440C too :D

As an olden-time failed academic, I love the Harris Tweed handles! Even I would buy one, even though it's a sheepfoot. Even though it would spoil my record of never having bought a forum knife.

I to would prefer wood but I think micarta would be serving a double duty here, low cost... but also keeping just enough of a difference to preserve Charlie's traditional barlow vision for his TCs. Regardless, better then could have hoped for resolution to the 2017 BF knife question! Many thanks Charlie

I'm out this year. I certainly don't want to make any enemies here but I just don't approve of the business arrangement being made again this year. Have fun and enjoy your knives, I'm sure they'll be beauties.

I think Charlie tried to engage Case once before, unsuccessfully. I would be on board for a BF Buck 301.

This and Jack's European thoughts are really excellent ideas.

EDIT: Now that I've gotten through the thread, I will say:

Charlie, that sounds like a great idea.

This would be my first TC Barlow, so of course I am IN, any scale material, any blade configuration.

A TC Barlow for 2017!!!

Let me know if I can help in any way to take the load off of you, Charlie.

best

This!

My color vote is still for Bladeforums Blue! :D

Sounds great to me, Charlie. I like the sound of micarta handles (in a natural color). Micarta is not necessarily an untraditional handle material either. It was invented by Westinghouse around 1910. There are a couple of old topics on another forum that discuss a micarta like material which was used on some Robeson pocket knives.

I am one who buys the forum knife every year, regardless of what they are. I like them all. If I really like them, I'll buy 2 or 3! I try not to get wrapped up in the discussions that happen, but I do vote in the polls. I like to read everyone's opinions, it gives me a chance to weigh the possibilities.

Being that our manufacturing options seem fewer and fewer every year, it's nice to know we still have an option to get this done, and I am very happy to see Charlie has stepped up to put that in motion. The TC barlow is a great pattern, so that's a no-brainer. I'd love to see bone or rams horn on the knives, but micarta is a nice choice also.

Great news (pending approval, of course)

This sounds awesome!!!! But I would gladly pay more for the swedge and long pull, ala Beer Scout.

I'm glad to see that you're willing to step up to the plate again, Charlie. Whatever you come up with, in whatever fashion, works for me.

You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!

It took 151 replies to this thread for me to finally feel like I should type instead of read! Charlie, if you are up to this, you certainly have my vote and my admiration for making such a terrific suggestion! :D

Sounds great, Charlie. You are the savior of the Forum knife.

Thank you, Charlie! :)

Very excited and I'll be happy with whatever comes of the handle materials!

But I'd like to throw this out there.... soup bone? Plllllease? It would be well worth the extra few bucks!
