Winter kith?

Nice! I was torn between the parks 50 and maxims dt48, ended up getting the dt48. Also I think the hidden tang will look good, but I also like the profile the way it is right now. Either way it will be a sweet knife

A few issues that brought me to hidden tang was that it's already heat treated and the edge is ground to .01 thickness plus the spine is about 1/4" thick. So I needed a way to loose the weight. This was going to get a cord wrap so I like thick blades for cord wrapping to add body to the handle.

Those blades are not differentially hardened...just they way they looked coming back from peters...I do have a few other options ..a couple sharp finger-esque types in cru forge v , a 5" blade trail point in aebl...hmmmm :) this will be fun :)

On the subject of an advanced KITH -

We tried a two level KITH and it was not well received. Having to be classified is not something that most people take as friendly. The whole point of a KITH is friendliness and fun. In my guidelines, I try to explain who should wait a year before entering a KITH. They can take the advice or not, that is their option. Personally, I don't care what the value of the knife I receive is, as long as it shows the best effort of the maker. Limiting the project to a set of parameters also limits the range of entrants. Each person may have a specialty they can enter. One person a sword, another a hunting knife, another a hawk, and another a kitchen knife. This diversity is part of what makes the excitement of a KITH.

I will join the Groundhog Day KITH, and will put my best effort into the knife I make.

If someone wants to start an advanced KITH sometime, the only real way would be to have an advanced level project. It would be wrong to have someone decide who could and couldn't enter. A KITH should be open to all members who want to join. An arbitrary requirement of being a member for at least one year is OK, but any other qualifications test would not be inclusive. A damascus knife KITH where you had to make the damascus yourself, or a sword KITH, etc. would limit the entries to the more advanced makers .... but frankly, I think it would also take the fun out of it.
The kitchen knife KITH that was done in the summer was a slightly advanced KITH, but most folks who can make a good knife can do a kitchen knife. Those who entered had a lot of fun.

After 2 years and 50 knives, I would like to enter the Winter KITH.
I will be making a 5 3/4" Hunter/Skinner 1084 Aldo
Handle will be stabilized figured walnut with SS guard and spacers

I hope this will qualify for this event.
Thanks,

I added you to the list.

This is what i'm thinking for an entry. I have some sweet rosewood burl for scales 3/8" thick. I haven't done a knife with bolsters yet, but I love brass and want to give it a go. What do ya'll think? It would be flat ground since I don't have a big wheel yet. Where can I get brass for the bolsters? I only have 1 1/2" x 3/16" aldo's 1084, I had a different design in mind, but my steel is limiting me from that one.

I get brass/copper from metal supermarkets in their cutoff bin. Maybe there's one near you, or a similar type place.

If I can find the time I would like to join in. I think I'll make some sort of kitchen knife since that's what I'm doing most at the moment. A lot of people in this KITH. Cool!

Hey Willie I've been out of town for about 10 days, so just seeing this--I would definitely be in. Not sure what type piece I will enter, but I have a lot of options.

Looking forward to this one!

Got it!

Question. Since we are supposed to challange ourselves on this build, I am thinking of doing a wa petty. In keeping with the gift theme of the KITH, I am thinking of making the knife entirely from materials that have been gifted to me from other makers. So osage orange handle (from Scott Gossman), ebonite or walnut ferule (from Robert Frost) and the blade from Hitachi Blue #2 (from Stacy Apelt). The question is we are supposed to make the knife from start to finish by ourselves, but the Steel from Stacy is already cut into a blank. I am fully capable of cutting out a blank, but want to use this specific piece. Anyone have an issue with that?

I dont see a problem with that, as long as you are still grinding the bevels and everything. good idea using gifted materials!

Thanks. It seems fitting since everyone has been so generous over the last 15 months. (wow, seems like I've been doing this a lot longer than that). Without the generous sharing of advice and materials, I wouldn't have gotten past the "knife shaped object" stage.

This is fine. Many makers use waterjetted profiles, completely fine in the rules. I love the idea. This kith is feeling really positive to me.
