Winter kith?

Merry Christmas all. Be sure to spend the quality time with your family today, your shop will still be there tomorrow and you can get back to working on your kith knife!

Here is a sneak peek at what I'm working on. Black dyed maple burl, ivory micarta, copper liners and pins, and a swept point skinner in 1095. I have a question for everyone though. I've only used stainless or nickel silver pins in the ivory micarta before and I read that copper pins can bleed into the micarta when sanding. Any tips on preventing that?

I'm no help. I rarely use micarta, and when I do I tend to use phenolic pins. Sorry.

Warren

Edit: I like your inife.

Bartlett blades, I have used copper pins many times and haven't had the issues you are asking about--having said that I have not used them in Ivory Micarta--I've used them on Coffeee bag Micarta, Burgundy linen Micarta, Black paper Micarta, and Blue paper Micarta--on these I have had no issues with the copper pins bleeding or staining the Micarta in any way. I would say if it was a concern to me, I would take a small piece of the cocerned Micarta, and mount a pin in it, and finish the pieced as I would a finished handle scale to see if it's an issue.

Best luck to you -- looks like it will be a nice knife!

I reckon it will be this one, if I get it out to Paul Bos in time, and then get a handle on it.

I am thinking of a G10 handle in yellow and royal blue, and stainless corby's.

If the placement of the holes at the butt end doesn't make sense, no problem. I can change it.

Thanks for the tip, I made a test piece and sanded it up to 2000. I don't see any streaking or bleeding!

I would like to participate in this kith. Everything I have in progress is currently spoken for but I have something in mind already.

Eta: here's what I think I'll do. W2 boning knife with flame boxelder and some kind of bolster not sure what yet.

Finished up yesterday, just waiting on leather to come in.

W2 tapered tang and African Blackwood with carbon fiber pins.

Super nice leifjl, The recipient of that knife would be proud and lucky--I really like the looks of your grinds there!

I am new to this forum and have been making knives for about a year now. I just learned from a friend about this kith and would like to join if it is not to late. Here are some examples of my latest knives. The mini chopper needs a little more polishing still.

BartlettBlades, I'm glad that you figured out your pin situation on the Micarta you plan to use--I've done a lot of guinea pigging to figure if something is gonna work well or not

Back up kith knife finished. If the one I have planned doesn't turn out as hoped this will be my fall back. Light is funny were the swedge meets the bevel in this pic. It's a nice transition. Nothing really complicated about this but it came out very clean.
