Winter kith?

I over etched the blade, and tried to knock it back with some 2500g paper, but I'll have to go back to 1500 or so, and redo the etch. There is a lot of great ashi in this hitachi white blade.

That looks really nice! I've never used the Hitachi steels, do they produce a really vivid hamon like w2 and the 10xx steels?

Hitachi white is the steel with the most hamon potential of the commonly available steels. W2, W1, 1075, and 1095 follow in hamon potential in that order. It's basically 1.1% carbon and nothing else besides iron. Low manganese is the main variable in hamon potential, as long as there aren't other alloys at play. Chromium and nickel decrease hamon potential, as they increase hardenability.

Getting my profile close. Got some brass in for the bolsters.

What do y'all think? The wood has some really nice goldish chatoyance I think will look good with the brass.

I think I'll probably do one similar to this. 9" hunter, hand made sheath. Have a piece of snakewood from Ben that I think I'll use.

A very useful design. It looks thick towards the tip. Grind it to 0.020" or 0.015" all along the edge, and you are golden.

After 2 years and 50 knives, I would like to enter the Winter KITH.
I will be making a 5 3/4" Hunter/Skinner 1084 Aldo
Handle will be stabilized figured walnut with SS guard and spacers

I hope this will qualify for this event.
Thanks,

Troy where did you get the walnut? It's going to go really well with your blade. I look forward to seeing it completed.

Oh yeah! I can see where that's going, and I really like it!

Thank you Beanman13 for your nice comments. That is Indiana Walnut that was cut and given to Purdue University. I am doing a research project paper with the
professors of Wood Science on stabilizing. For helping them with the research, they give me A LOT of wood for stabilizing. I have probably 400lb of walnut, cherry,
oak, and maple sitting in my garage. We have stabilized over 100 blocks and scales to this point with great success. Looking forward to seeing this one turn out.

Lesson learned. Don't go out to the shop and grind primary bevels on a knife when your wife has you flaming mad. Staring over. I may be able to save this one, but not going to try for the kith.

hah! i know this one all too well, been the struggle of the year, its how 6 " x 1/8" thick pettys become thin paring knives :)

Fixed this one but still cutting out a new one for the kith. This one will turn turn into a gift for a friend or family member.

Ok so tonight was a much better night at the grinder. Waiting to talk to JT about HT hopefully.

It is extremely unwise to go out to the shop and do anything that requires machinery when mad. This leads to bad things happening.

Heading out into the shop this afternoon to start my project. I have two styles in mind now, so I'll see how they get started and decide which will be the best. That one will be my KITH knife.
