Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

Does cross dressing count? If so, do I make a good looking woman?

While I'm a mostly practicing pacifist and do advocate and support gun and knife ownership, I do not recommend the usage of these items unless as a last resort. Pictures on the internet of injury/death are one thing. To see it happen in front of your face is quite another thing.

Oh come on now. She's one of those Mensa gals, her youtube channel topics are the empirical evidence. You know, the kind that plaster their face and name all over the web and weapons forums. But God will look over her if she just keeps the faith.

man's hobby

Even majority of men don't hobby knives. Many do hunt and fish, but for most of them knives are just knives and most times something cheap. 99,9% of men don't see knives as something to carry, or even might be weirded by the idea (not to speak of how weird knives as HOBBY are).

As far as girls who hobby knives? I don't see how it would make woman sexier. I think sexyness comes from something completely else. It does not make these women who hobby knives and guns unsexy though. But I have to say; a LOT of the girls in media who hobby knives I haven't really found that sexy to be honest.

Just my opinion though.

Thanks for your kind thoughts and words... I think people check out my profile because they are curious about a female being so active on 'blade forums'. As you mentioned here, there typically aren't too many women that share this hobby or like knives to the same extent as most guys... so it's always a curious thing, I am sure, to see a woman so active in a known 'man's' sport.

There are female BF members; not all as obvious as others. My avatar is my dog, who passed away several years ago.
I've got a few videos on my youtube channel where some of my knives are featured. Even have a few playing with my Kimura, including one where I demonstrate how I *finally* learned the zero g chaplin. But since none of the shots are angled down my top, they don't get as many hits as some female youtubers' videos. Oh, well. ;)

I carry at least two knives most of the time. None for self defense.

You can say that again. My father's into guns; can't be bothered with knives most of the time. Has actually said to me that he can't "remember" to grab a knife with his watch, keys, phone, gun, wallet, etc.
And yet I've lost track of how many times he's found himself needing to cut something and said to me, "You have your knife?" Makes me wonder what on earth he does the rest of the time, when I'm not nearby. LOL

Women are inherently sexy.
Except for Rosie,Whoopi and Oprah.
Knives are a bonus.

Hey UpNorth..thanks for taking the time to comment. However, I find your comment degrading, rude, judgmental, and undeserved. I apologize if somehow my being here and providing the link to my website (which it asks for, if you have one, in the profile area) offends you somehow or causes you to think ill of me. However, that is my profession (my youtube, news, writing books, writing news). It does not mean that I do not have interests outside of my profession or that I should not be allowed to have a website or youtube channel where I share my personal beliefs and faiths..I do not discuss those here...however. But I have every right as much as anyone else to provide a link to my website. Furthermore, this is the ONLY forum I subscribe to. I am not on any other forums at all. In truth, you have no idea why I am here. But, if you sort through some of my posts, comments, replies, you will clearly see that I am here because I have a genuine interest in knives. As per my photo (gravatar) that is my professional photo for my youtube channel in which I am made up. Be it known, the one on my youtube channel is cropped above my chest. It might also be noteworthy that in every photo you see of me, I am only wearing powder and a hint of blush, lipstick and eye make up...not 'plaster' as you put it. And, if you glance through my photos of me with a knife, I have little to no make up on and my hair is not even fixed. And, your slam about my faith...I have no idea where that came from, but very rude and has nothing whatsoever to do with this discussion, nor does it contribute to the post. Finally, I am new to blade forums and forums altogether, so maybe you should be a little more kind to a newbie and happy to see more females taking an interest in such a topic. If you disagree with something I do or post, I welcome you to kindly disagree and welcome any advice you may have to offer...yet you could do so in a much kinder, more tactful way. Needless to say, if you have to be rude, I encourage you to keep it to yourself. Thanks, but no thanks. ;) :thumbdn:

Thanks for your comment. As for the blade forums, I have seen a number of women on here, actually...just a lot more men. I am hoping that some of my posts will attract more attention from women and cause those who aren't to be more active and involved. Again, I do see that there are quite a few women on here who are VERY active and involved..but more would be nice. Blessings and thanks!

We aren't really talking about knives here are we?

Thank you Morrow. Yes, it seems as if this discussion has taken quite a different turn. I would very much so like it to get back on knives and why women should get more involved in carrying knives... even some suggestions on what types of knives might be best for a newbie would be welcome. For example, one of the things I love about Opinel's is that they are very easy to use. They open and close with ease, have an easy safety lock on them, and no surprises. I like the way they look, too. :)

You really have a hard time gaining anyone's interest in knives that doesn't already have interest in them. I've tried to interest a lot of people, male and female in mine and it never works. I've shown people that carry cheaper knives my nicer blades and mostly they just don't care. If they don't carry even a cheap knife then they make it very apparent because they won't even look. I haven't even ran into a lot of men in person that carry more than a cheaper knife. Just a few women that have something tiny and cheap to cut a thread, or open a taped package. Even guys I know that hunt and need a knife to dress game, tend to only have basic 40 dollars knives.

Hey Jill! Thanks for your comment!!!! You are very correct in what you say here. Although in my particular neck of the woods, there do seem to be quite a few men who I've come across who have a knife... nice knives? Not usually. As you say here, usually just a cheap knife.

Then again, I prefer the old fashioned knives as opposed to the modern steel looking knives (which have nothing to do with my previous paragraph above here..as these aren't necessarily cheap-modern knives). I usually love the knives with a handle that looks different or unusual as opposed to the common stag or plain brown wood. I DO like the wood with the unusual grains and patterns though. What can we do to get more people into knives? Any good suggestions from anyone on what works? Sounds like a silly question, but it's actually an important question, I think.

To a certain degree, knives are man jewelry for me.

(These ones even match!)

I don't know that you can do anything to interest more people in quality knives. Bottom line is they even if they do have mild interest, they don't wanna spend the money. It's something in my opinion people have to discover on their own. I was always around all sorts of guns and knives, I learned over the years about knives, firearms, hunting and the outdoors. I just progressed into better and better equipment. No one really lead me into it besides myself. Even though my Dad loves traditional knives and firearms, the path I took still was my own personal choice. My siblings don't have anywhere near my interest in knives as me.

I'm glad I got my mother into knives. First came the Ladybug, then the Dragonfly, now the Delica. She uses them quite often. Apparently, when she used one of her knives in her 'women's group' the other ladies looked at her like she had just discovered fire. At least one of those ladies now carries a pocketknife as a result. :)

Pretty much the same reaction and what I typically see around here also.

I was somewhat interested because of growing up around 'knives'..but in truth, lost the interest as I grew up. My boyfriend, however, reignited my interest because he constantly talks about knives and EDC type of stuff. So being exposed to it constantly caused my interest to come back to life. I am glad he did because it has caused me to be more prepared and smarter about this type of stuff. It also caused me to get on here and become a member out of that interest, and something fun for us to do..take blade photos on our hikes/walks/etc. and compare pics and help each other get a good photo while we're out. It is definitely something fun we both enjoy, or one of the things. We definitely love the EDC stuff too... Maxpedition, pens, moleskine, field notes, flashlights, etc. too. :) I never lost my interest in those things..but am more interested now than I was prior to my present relationship.

That's awesome! My first two knives were SAK's, but I have to say that, as I mentioned in a previous reply, I do love the Opinel for their ease of use and would suggest that to anyone as a first knife. It's a good knife, easy to use, and not complicated at all. And it looks nice!

Been interested in knives for a long time since I was a kid. Most women/girls simply don't understand this interest beyond getting one knife or perhaps two to carry for cutting (and that is mostly for the woods or outdoor activities). Bought a little Alox SAK classic last year. For whatever reason, I was expecting something a bit larger and wanted the toothpick and tweezers accessories. I just wasn't paying attention. Anyway, my wife sees it and it is kind of cute, said she wanted it to keep in her purse. So I thought that was a good start even though it will probably just get lost.

I generally feel that women have nearly as many uses for a knife as a man does. They are just not conditioned to using them. They need to cut something, they look for a scissors and so forth. Accessibility of the knife is the problem with women. If they are wearing jeans, no problem, but do they want a lump in their pocket or something clipped to their pocket... most don't. But if carrying a knife means putting it inside some handbag that is stashed accross the room or on their desks, it is just as easy for them to grab the scissors or unfortunately go to the cutlery drawer in the kitchen and generally mis-use a kitchen knife for something like prying. If you are going to use a knife, it has to be conveniently available or you won't use it often.

Lots of folks like the "leatherman" type multi-tools. Most contain a knife blade as well as other useful accessories. I have a couple. But do I really use them? ...Not very well except for the pliers and dislike digging out one of the other accessories to use unless I have no other choice. It is conditioning. I am more apt to open my SAK than grab the more diverse functioning multi-tool.

I am okay of thinking of a knife as a last resort defense item. But the person cut usually is not incapacitated and if they are bigger and stronger, they will take that pesky knife away from you and proceed to do whatever they intended in the first place and perhaps doing some cutting just because they have your knife. So, as a last resort, yeah, grab the knife. Any other time, I think you risk causing more physical harm. Telling the difference is hard to do..... Best to learn how to use a knife as a fighting instrument if you are thinking of having it for that reason. But, most don't get trained unless they got some hand to hand training in the military.

For a non-knife person, including a women, you need to start slow and condition the need or use of a knife. As that interest and conditioning becomes part of them, they will begin to perhaps think in terms of better knives or at least how to better use the knives they have. This goes to the age old discussion of "needing" a $100 vs $30 knife.... married people have to deal with this reality of disposable income use.
