Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

Pretty sexist comments. Maybe you might deserve to be cut somewhere the scars don't typically show up except in the locker room or the doctors office... For that post, I have to give a big :thumbdn:
To my admittedly jaundiced eye it may be sexist but, if one may permitted a distinction, the least offensive kind. It's meant, I think, as a compliment and expression of appreciation that got caried away a bit. But i would qualify that by saying if anyone is having castration anxieties either one should seek some help or take the hint that they may be making some pretty sexistly offensive stuff.

A clever man once asked whether being courteous and courteously complimentary to a woman, as one wouldn't be to man, is not by definition sexist and therefore inappropriate or at least hypocritical.. And i answered, wisely, from many decades of experience and with a survival instinct honed over decades of training and deep thought: the answer is no and shut the hell up before a woman hears you and we both catch hell.

WHO SAYS YOU CAN'T BE ALL WOMAN AND PLAY IN A MAN'S WORLD?

EVERYONE'S THOUGHTS/IDEAS/OPINIONS/EXPERIENCES WELCOME!

When many of us think of women in situations that are normally a man's hobby, such as guns, knives, hunting, etc. it can seem 'sexy' or 'hot' to some. Then, to others, it is mind boggling why a woman would ever be interested in such a thing. But let's look beyond the sexy and beyond the intrigue at the reality of it. Out of everyone who should have a knife, shouldn't more women be interested in them for at least, if nothing else, protecting themselves? Shouldn't women want to know how to survive if they are alone, or alone with their kids, and get stuck in a bad situation? Or, in the dreaded event an attacker comes on the scene? Don't get me wrong. I'm not lumping all women into one group here. I know there are many women interested in these things, and more. However, in my opinion, the vast majority of women are mainly interested in more 'girly' types of activities. I won't lie, I am too. But, I ALSO appreciate knives and every day carry topics. Not only is it a fun hobby, but, I think it is of the utmost to prepare oneself for the unexpected.

I grew up with a dad who was into Buck knives and I would watch him as he sat for ours sharpening, polishing, etc. But, my boyfriend re-inspired my interest. I am the type of person who genuinely takes an interest in things that the person I care about is interested in. So, I took an interest in his knife talk and his large knife collection (and his Blade Forums postings...:)) and my interest was instantly re-ignited. He still has to correct me all the time on types of knives, patina, and so forth, as I am learning.

My overall point is that I feel more women could genuinely benefit from taking an interest in knives and EDC items. Knives can be used for so many different things---from opening a letter or a bottle, to a quick screw while out and about (if you have a knife, such as a SAK that has a screwdriver on it.) And, as a means of survival and self defense. One should know the proper way to use a knife in self defense so that it is not turned and used on them...and, of course, other proper knife handling technicalities.

However, let's be ready...be prepared...and be smart because you never know when you might need it.

AND BE TOUGH AT THE SAME TIME--BE READY FOR WHATEVER COMES--IT'S THE SMART THING TO DO!

Quite a generalization there. My lady is nothing like what you describe.

On a side note, a knife for "protection" is a VERY slippery slope. It is not as simple as "stick em to stop the rapes"! It is combat. A knife is not a gun. You cant reliably stop an aggressor in the pull of a trigger. you have to stab , slash, thurst twist , and pray to god you dont bleed out with your intestines spilling all over the ground. It will takes MINUTES of not HOURS for someone to succumb to wounds from a knife, and imagine the damage that will be done to you while your assailant is still concious.

Too many people come in here talking about how they use a blade for protection. Its a viable method IF YOU HAVE THE TRAINING. Otherwise your setting yourself up for a lifetime of legal drama, but also to potentially be disabled, or dead.

Get wise about self defense. IT IS NOT A GAME.

If you want to post your picture on here many do. It's no different than the guys doing it. I don't like to post mine anywhere online though, I don't like the unwanted attention myself but that's entirety a personal opinion.

Thanks Jill! I'm all over the net anyways under my published author name/public personality name..so it doesn't bother me. However, i do not use my real name anywhere... I have several FAKE names on the net I go by. :-) Again, thank you girlfriend! Appreciate your feedback.

Oh, I see that you kindly removed what you had previously stated. No worries, my friend. I welcome any thoughts, (although yours were 'borderline' rude and presumptuous...in my opinion..maybe not to someone else, but to me...) However, as long as they are not rude or degrading. BUT I PREFER to keep the discussion about knives and what the original topic is about...which is about why more women should get into knives (and EDC). Not about trying to figure out who I am or what I am about... or why I have a few photos of myself among others... Thanks for understanding and again, I hope you are having a great weekend! Where I am at, it's very nice for a change! Looking forward to spring and some new knives and new knife photos! Blessings to you and yours, and many of them, friend.

And yet you go on about how you look in a photo and how the lighting in it changes the way you look.

I applaud your efforts to attempt to get more women into the hobby, but all this thread strikes me as is your attempt to create your own chat thread with you as moderator/host.

I guess we have seen countless guys do the same thing, so maybe that says something.

Hey thanks! That's what this post is about. And I was unaware I was generalizing anyone..I think was pretty clear in what I wrote that I was not doing as you say here. See here:

Thanks. I hope I have cleared things up for you on what the intentions of this post are about. I do not know you or your 'lady'...this post is an overall generalization..and I have clearly pointed out that I am NOT Categorizing ALL women into one lump. Again, thanks and sorry for any misunderstanding or offense.

 Excellent feedback, HJK! And, with an added twist of humor, I like that! Thanks for commenting.

Yep. That's what this post is about. Discussions that would advise, assist, theorize, and encourage more women to step outside the box..even if they do not 'feel' interested in it...I can honestly say, once you get hands on and appreciate a good knife (the look of it, the feel, the type of blade, length, width, style, etc.) it can become quite addictive! I recently purchased a good customized Buck knife for my boyfriend with the excellent 530V Satin as opposed to the stainless steel. Although stainless steel is nice and does what it is supposed to do, the 530V satin is a much better choice, in my opinion. After all, it is an American-made and developed premium grade stainless steel created especially for knives and, it is a powder-made steel with a uniform carbide distribution and clean steel properties. I am sure eventually, there will be something new and better, I am sure... But for now, as a blade material, I think it offers excellent corrosion resistance and the utmost in edge qualities. It holds a great edge, gets very sharp, and again, excellent anti-corrosion properties. So as you grow in your knowledge (I still have A LOT to learn..) you become interested in the better knives and paying the money for them. Again, just my opinion..for what it's worth!

Hey gorgeous, its called s30v :p

Again, this has to do with General Knife Discussion how, exactly?

No worries. I hope you have a great day, and thanks for your thoughts. Whether I agree with your summation of me or my intentions or not...I realize you do not know me..so no offense taken. Take care!

Marcinek...are you only here to nit pick me? Judge me? Criticize or find fault? What is your point? You are now becoming a nuisance. I have been nothing but kind in return to you. Some reason for an attack here? Did a nice looking woman rain on your parade at some point in your life? It is your comments here which have nothing to do with this thread which for some stupid reason I keep replying to... this will be my last reply to your brazen, meaningless, comments...and I encourage you to kindly go elsewhere if you have nothing to contribute that is worthy. Thanks.

My point is that this strikes me more as about self promotion than about General Knife Discussion.

And unless you are a moderator, yours is not to judge where anyone's comments belong.

No one owns a thread here.

Also I don't see where I insulted you....I asked you a question. Leave the personal attacks out of it.

Marcinek often plays forum policeman on threads. But I suspect he's a pretty good guy.

Blade Girl, at your worst, I know a lot of people who don't measure up. You can take that as a compliment.

Marcinek, maybe you should have just said "self promotion" in your inital comment. Perhaps? Don't care really. She has he web site linked on her posts and anyone can take that as self promotion or free advertising.

I see... yes, I get hit with trolls regularly in my work. I just didn't figure they were here.. (sigh) Speaking of knives, what kind of blade do you recommend?

I think you should re read and see who is attacking and doing the judging. On a different note, do you have anything about KNIVES to contribute to this conversation? Recommendations? Thoughts on knives? Back to knives PLEASE! Thanks!

I was hoping to go on about how I look in the morning and what lighting I find most flattering.

But if that's only OK for you to do in your thread then here:

Suggesting a specific knife for SD for someone who hasn't trained in knife based SD is pointless. A grocery store weak knife will be as (in)effective as a Randall 1.
