Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

Thanks. :)
Someone has to take up the slack, right? ;)

I also think that although others don't carry knives as much, they aren't necessarily more scared of them.
Two days ago I had to buy a new pair of gloves (the old ones weren't working out so well), and I needed to cut off all those tags/plastic things so I could wear them.
I was at a Tim Horton's (right next door to Mark's Work Wearhouse) full of people; I used my Emerson Karambit to cut the plastic crap off, as the curved blade seems to work best for doing that in a controlled fashion.

The people nearest me looked over, then just went about drinking their coffee, not worried, scared or annoyed. I think there's hope for society after all.

You pulled out a kbit in public and no one cared? Sheesh, I'd be lucky to get away with "brandishing" a mini grip around here:rolleyes:

I do anyway though, because by now I'm so beyond caring what the unprepared think of me.

Yep, I've found that around here at least, it's generally fine as long as you're using it for something. :)

I guess I'm the same way too, really.
In November I went to Ottawa for a homeless handout mission, and we ran across one guy that just kept flicking his assisted opening knife open and closed, open and closed for no reason at all as he yacked at us.
I was preparing to smack him down with my hiking staff if he made one wrong move...it was just really odd what the guy was doing.

He wasn't homeless either; the homeless people were less weird than that sketchy guy.

I recall reading a article that went through various methods of self defense against rape, and compiled whether or not they were effective, pepper spray had something like a 60% effectiveness rate, whereas knife/gun was effective 99% of the time. I'll see if I can find the article.

Have you ever used/ seen pepperspray used in a REAL defensive scenario?

Everyone gets hit with. Everyones blind, or atleast somewhat so, even the person using it. Things happen so fast in a defense scenario, youre bound to get hit with the mist.

Im not saying a knife CANT be used in defense, but you better know what youre doing. When you draw a weapon, you are entering combat. When you enter combat, your chances of grevious injury and death skyrocket. Do everything you can to stack the cards in your favor.

What im getting at, is dont clip a knife to your pocket with the frame of mind "ill stick someone if they f&%$ with me!". Because it is not that simple. Melee combat is the bloodiest, gnarliest, most barbaric way to engage in combat.

If youre really serious about defense, you carry a gun.

Rant over.

View attachment 513291 My advice to women (and men), as far as knives go, is look for a folding, flush cutting, curved jaw cuticle nipper. When you get a skin tag/hang nail, and you grab it with your teeth, a decent tug will lay you open to the bone. Cuticle nippers are available at the drug store, but they don't fit in your pocket. If the tool is on board, your problems are solved.
To my knowledge, the last folding cuticle cutters were made in Maniago in the early 50's. There is a huge Swiss Army knife, with 78 tools, that can tighten your golf cleats, but has no cuticle nipper in sight. I have hundreds of knives, but the one I use most is the one with the cuticle nipper.
Call on your favorite pocket knife company and beat on them to reproduce and bring to market an extremely practical tool. If you land one, tie it to your big toe at night, so it doesn't walk away. Treat it with care (soft cuticles only).
I have to say that Blade Girl without make up looks better Charlie Mike with make up. YRMV

I think you need to get a custom fixed blade :D

I just put the finishing touches on this...

My wife tends to carry her Kinfolk/Case traditional. Sorry, I don't remember what pattern. I've never even carried it. Its on the larger side. The knife was a gift and has sentimental value. Those are often the best kind. She gets a lot of visitors at her place of employment with people wanting to use her knife.

This thread got derailed FAST....
As to the original post... really sharing interests with your significant other is an amazing experience. My wife and I share EVERYTHING! We both work in Law Enforcement. I am a competitive bodybuilder and she trains with me. She is doing her first physique show this year.
we also prepare. We have gold and silver, stored food, 11 acres and a cabin as well as both having diesel 4x4 trucks that make more than 500hp. We also view the state of our union with the same concern.
She knows all of my weapons and how to operate them. She has a 9mm Glock and trains with it.
With regards to knives, what do you carry? My wife has a Delica in her purse, a fixed ESEE in her truck with a Surefire LED light. I'm buying her a Benchmade auto and a small Fenix light for Valentines day... along with some nice slippers and a plush robe.
What really tops it off is when she wants to impress, she really turns heads.. both men AND women! She is in incredible shape and is so fun that people are just drawn to her... she hasn't yet joined this forum, but she is on the bodybuilding forum I'm on and much like this thread guys really respond to a pretty girls pics!
The point of my post was to whole heartedly agree that when people share the interests of their partner and is really mutually rewarding... I really enjoy looking at the home ideas with her on Pinterest. It's a rare quality which is why I sealed that deal immediately! My wife just bought me a Benchmade 940-1 for Valentines Day!!

Charlie, I wasn't trying to be offensive or anything. I just know when you are recovering from an addiction, that a lot of the recovery is mental in nature and the tat serves as a constant reminder of something that you have to live with. I sometimes notice the folks (from the local jail) out picking up litter along the highway with the DUI on their safety vests.

Blade Girl, lets talk knives! I'm thru with my editorial comments on this thread.

You mentioned that you have a couple SAKs and they were your first. They are one of my standard recommendations for ladies who might not want a tactical knife. Where have your interests gone from that point as I notice you have 6 or 7 now?

Good deal! I would very much so LOVE to talk about knives :-) I like SAK's, yes..but I have several... I have one that only has one blade that was given to me and it's silver..a red one and the camo one. I do like the Opinels..I would like to get every color in the Opinel just for fun. I just like to collect them mainly... :-)

It sure did get derailed fast, Dude. It sounds like you and your wife have a great relationship! It is fun to share the knife stuff with my boyfriend..I much enjoy it. We both have a lot in common..we both love to take walks, hike... I'm trying to get him to do the bike riding stuff with me..but I don't think he much cares for it. However, when we take our walks, now we can both take pics of our knives together too! It's a lot of fun. Kudos to you and your wife!

I was at a knife store and they sell a pack of all the Opinels. Certain models (#'s) sell out pretty quickly. Might be something you'd be interested in.

I have tried to do things "together" and bike riding was one of them. My wife does not like to "sweat". So, bike riding is just for me as is kayaking and some other sports that I enjoy. It used to bother me. But as I get older, I don't really care any more. As my Dad would have said, "she's a Holiday Inn" girl versus camping for fun.

Welcome to BladeForums, OP!

Our little corner of the internet is an actual community of knife aficionados and enthusiasts. As you may have already noticed, there are some who are naturally suspicious of new members; we have seen our share of spammers and shameless self-promoters that only serve to 'junk-up' our beloved site. Worse, there have also been liars, swindlers and thieves. Such are not welcome in Spark's house (Spark is the owner of BladeForums) and will be shown the plank by Cap'n Spark or his crew of merry Mods--not that I presume to speak for them. Anyway, this is only an explanation and not an excuse for poor manners. So welcome again, and I hope you enjoy learing and sharing along with us (we like lots of photos of sharp and shiny things, btw!)

As to the theme of this thread, I think that the practice and habit of carrying a knife every day is on the decline in general. Our modern society has grown accustomed to EZ-Open tabs, twist-off bottle caps, etc. Many folks, men and women alike, get by just fine without carrying any knife at all. But there will always be a caveat to the things we take for granted, and it sure is handy to have a knife on you when you need one. I've carried a knife in my pocket since I was around seven years old (with the exception of frequenting airports and other knife-prohibited places) and don't see myself changing things any time soon. :)

-Brett
Hey Brett! Thanks for the kind welcome and explanation. To be honest, I receive much worse treatment from trolls on the internet re my work that I do, so this is piddly child's play. However, I wasn't expecting it here, so was a bit stunned, but thank you kindly for your explanation. I enjoy seeing everyone's blade photos and commenting on them, as well as I enjoy posting my own and seeing comments... I am also learning, so I love people's advice and feedback too! Thanks so much for taking the time to welcome me and share your thoughts. :)

Thanks. :)

BTW I see you also wrote a book...Kudos! I know how much work is involved in such a task!:thumbup::thumbup:

Thanks! :)
It was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun.
Yeah..I know. I LOVE writing... it's my job online and my joy offline. I have two more books in a trilogy to book one..I just have not had time to work on getting them out..but wrote all three at the same time. Anyhow, just thought I'd leave a quick mention to you.. I know it's OFF the subject, but couldn't help it! Have a great evening!

I love sweating during a good workout... the body's natural, best way to detox itself! And, it lets me know that I worked hard. As far as Opinels, I really like the No. 7 model.

Just a quick note to say I appreciate your attitude and writing. When I came back from Viet Nam I gave my wife a Buck folder and we talked about the defensive use of a knife. My wife was sexy then and now after 50 years of marriage.

Oh ya...she now is never without her Manix and usually without her man. 😊

Wow, thanks so much EyeDog. How kind of you to take the time to leave some positive feedback! It is much appreciated! I just saw a sweet looking Buck folder on a Buck Knife forum..it was a beauty! If you go to my profile and the recent comments area, or whatever it is called, you will see my comment there, thus you will see the knife..it's red. If you go look, tell me what you think. I think it would ALSO be a great knife for a woman to carry.
