Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

FWIW, I've given my sister a few knives: a Mini Grip, an older Vic Huntsman and a Vic Classic. I know for a fact that she carries the two Vics because I've seen them hanging from her bag and she's told me about times when they've come in handy, including one time that one of her students had tied some string around his finger, which eventually swelled up and become painful, and she used one of the SAKs to cut the string off for him.

Most likely what it takes to get someone interested in any kind of knife is for them to see how useful they can be. Some, like my father, will remain mostly uninterested no matter what.

Thanks..this is one of my favorite blades...it has just about everything on it a person could possibly need! I love it and love camo!

:D So the "I wish you were my girlfriend" stuff didn't get a bold red underlined demand to get back on the subject. Oy.

I hope your chat/vanity thread is a great success.

GREAT IDEA!

I am going to ask this one time and one time only, do not derail this thread. Someone is trying to have a conversation, if you have nothing to add that is constructive or offers a sustainable perspective, stay out of the thread. Ok folks.... this isn't a free for all, a chat line or an online dating service....

Discuss the topic itself, not each other.
Keep your commentary on point.
Of youre just here to troll the thread or post negativity for negativies sake.. GTFO.

This was taken in front of my home. I look like this every day.

:D

Charlie, I wasn't trying to be offensive or anything. I just know when you are recovering from an addiction, that a lot of the recovery is mental in nature and the tat serves as a constant reminder of something that you have to live with. I sometimes notice the folks (from the local jail) out picking up litter along the highway with the DUI on their safety vests.

Blade Girl, lets talk knives! I'm thru with my editorial comments on this thread.

You mentioned that you have a couple SAKs and they were your first. They are one of my standard recommendations for ladies who might not want a tacticol knife. Where have your interests gone from that point as I notice you have 6 or 7 now?

On topic...

My ex wife owns a BM530, BM551, and a Spyderco/Hossom Forrester. When we split up, she still brought them to me for sharpening.

I think that owning/carrying knives is related to independence. Much the same as changing your own oil/filters or being able to hit a moving target at 300 meters with iron sights. I find independence sexy.

Quite a generalization there. My lady is nothing like what you describe.

On a side note, a knife for "protection" is a VERY slippery slope. It is not as simple as "stick em to stop the rapes"! It is combat. A knife is not a gun. You cant reliably stop an aggressor in the pull of a trigger. you have to stab , slash, thurst twist , and pray to god you dont bleed out with your intestines spilling all over the ground. It will takes MINUTES of not HOURS for someone to succumb to wounds from a knife, and imagine the damage that will be done to you while your assailant is still concious.

Too many people come in here talking about how they use a blade for protection. Its a viable method IF YOU HAVE THE TRAINING. Otherwise your setting yourself up for a lifetime of legal drama, but also to potentially be disabled, or dead.

Get wise about self defense. IT IS NOT A GAME.

I recall reading a article that went through various methods of self defense against rape, and compiled whether or not they were effective, pepper spray had something like a 60% effectiveness rate, whereas knife/gun was effective 99% of the time. I'll see if I can find the article.

I think most people, male or female, young or old, can appreciate the usefulness of the sak. A sak with scissors is a great edc that most people will find useful. I really like them and carry one daily. A couple of modern folders that I really like and think are equally compatible with a man or a women are the Spyderco Delica 4 and the Benchmade Mini-Griptllian.
Check them out if you haven't already.

Welcome to BladeForums, OP!

Our little corner of the internet is an actual community of knife aficionados and enthusiasts. As you may have already noticed, there are some who are naturally suspicious of new members; we have seen our share of spammers and shameless self-promoters that only serve to 'junk-up' our beloved site. Worse, there have also been liars, swindlers and thieves. Such are not welcome in Spark's house (Spark is the owner of BladeForums) and will be shown the plank by Cap'n Spark or his crew of merry Mods--not that I presume to speak for them. Anyway, this is only an explanation and not an excuse for poor manners. So welcome again, and I hope you enjoy learing and sharing along with us (we like lots of photos of sharp and shiny things, btw!)

As to the theme of this thread, I think that the practice and habit of carrying a knife every day is on the decline in general. Our modern society has grown accustomed to EZ-Open tabs, twist-off bottle caps, etc. Many folks, men and women alike, get by just fine without carrying any knife at all. But there will always be a caveat to the things we take for granted, and it sure is handy to have a knife on you when you need one. I've carried a knife in my pocket since I was around seven years old (with the exception of frequenting airports and other knife-prohibited places) and don't see myself changing things any time soon. :)

My wife carries a knife; it's handy for cutting things that need cutting.
At work once, she got asked why would she carry a knife...while she was opening a box of supplies. Easy answer though: "For what I'm doing right now." :D

Is it sexy? Well, I did like when she cut down that tree with her axe. :)
Competence is sexier than weakness; I want a partner in life, not someone who needs to be coddled.

Yep, less people are carrying knives these days...so I carry three to make up for it. :D

You're a good man, Stabby! :D

Thanks. :)
Someone has to take up the slack, right? ;)

I also think that although others don't carry knives as much, they aren't necessarily more scared of them.
Two days ago I had to buy a new pair of gloves (the old ones weren't working out so well), and I needed to cut off all those tags/plastic things so I could wear them.
I was at a Tim Horton's (right next door to Mark's Work Wearhouse) full of people; I used my Emerson Karambit to cut the plastic crap off, as the curved blade seems to work best for doing that in a controlled fashion.

The people nearest me looked over, then just went about drinking their coffee, not worried, scared or annoyed. I think there's hope for society after all.
