I admire self-reliance, and I believe that recognizing the value of a knife outside the kitchen, and the willingness to use a knife as a tool, are examples of a self-reliant mindset.
But at the same time, I don't look down on people who have no interest in knives.
As far as self-defense, there are many options, but there is no such thing as the PERFECT option that will guarantee ones survival. Guns do not offer any guarantees, no matter how much training one has. Neither do mace or pepper spray. Neither do impact weapons. And even if a woman is a 20 year black belt in martial arts, that's still no guarantee that she will prevail against a larger, stronger attacker, or multiple attackers.
Likewise, a knife offers no guarantees. But here is a story about a woman who successfully used a knife to defend herself from a rapist. She was not harmed, the knife was not turned against her, and based on the attitude of the cops, I seriously doubt that the woman suffered any legal consequences.

Of course this is just one incident, and in no way proves that a knife is the IDEAL choice of self-defense for every woman. But I don't argue with success. And I'm sure glad that woman didn't listen to all the people who advise against carrying or using a knife for self-defense. And I'm sure her family and loved ones are glad as well. I know that if my girlfriend or sister successfully defended herself against an attacker with a knife, I wouldn't care what she used, I'd just be glad that she prevailed.
