Women and Knives: Why More Women Need To Carry A Blade

I admire self-reliance, and I believe that recognizing the value of a knife outside the kitchen, and the willingness to use a knife as a tool, are examples of a self-reliant mindset.

But at the same time, I don't look down on people who have no interest in knives.

As far as self-defense, there are many options, but there is no such thing as the PERFECT option that will guarantee ones survival. Guns do not offer any guarantees, no matter how much training one has. Neither do mace or pepper spray. Neither do impact weapons. And even if a woman is a 20 year black belt in martial arts, that's still no guarantee that she will prevail against a larger, stronger attacker, or multiple attackers.

Likewise, a knife offers no guarantees. But here is a story about a woman who successfully used a knife to defend herself from a rapist. She was not harmed, the knife was not turned against her, and based on the attitude of the cops, I seriously doubt that the woman suffered any legal consequences.

Of course this is just one incident, and in no way proves that a knife is the IDEAL choice of self-defense for every woman. But I don't argue with success. And I'm sure glad that woman didn't listen to all the people who advise against carrying or using a knife for self-defense. And I'm sure her family and loved ones are glad as well. I know that if my girlfriend or sister successfully defended herself against an attacker with a knife, I wouldn't care what she used, I'd just be glad that she prevailed.

I was hoping to go on about how I look in the morning and what lighting I find most flattering.

But if that's only OK for you to do in your thread then here:

Suggesting a specific knife for SD for someone who hasn't trained in knife based SD is pointless. A grocery store weak knife will be as (in)effective as a Randall 1.

You have a point Marcinek. I might like to say that my picture does not flatter me from my point of view, but I simply won't post a picture. Social conditioning...... many women do get some of their self image from how they look and is reinforced by males. It is the world we live in and I think its a pretty wonderful world overall. Marcinek, you should upgrade your membership so you can post over in political. Plenty of room for your views.

Thanks for the great information and thoughts!

You want a topic/cause that is knife related? Go and check all the previous threads where a guy is asking about what knife to get for his wife/daughter/girlfriend.

The default suggestion: a pink one.

Sort that out.

And, seriously, get over the "my thread" thing. Once a thread is opened, its out of your control. I've been here a while. It's how it works.

I see... yes, I get hit with trolls regularly in my work. I just didn't figure they were here.. (sigh) Speaking of knives, what kind of blade do you recommend?

what do you mean by blade? shape, type, whole knife iteself? Anyways...

I recommend a karambit.

The most useful, and universal bladeshape in my opinion. Theyre absolutely awesome.

Emerson combat karambit is hard to beat.

Welcome to Bladeforums, Blade Girl. This really is a pretty cool Internet place, don't let any negative nonsense get you down. Time and your actions will set the record straight, one way or the other.
My knife obsession has rubbed off on my wife and daughter, sort of. My daughter carries a Victorinox Classic that she got from me, she asked for it. And my wife carries Wengers version of the Classic as well as a two bladed pen knife made by Victorinox. They carry them whenever they leave the house.
The diffrence between them and me is that they want for no more knives. What they have and carry meets their needs so they are satisfied. They have no further need of or intrest in knives.
I do believe tho that the reason they carry a knife at all is because they saw me use them over the years and recognize there usefulness. So I guess just encouraging and teaching people about knives by being a good example is the way to go imho.

For self defense, I agree. If you want to carry a knife for this purpose, you can't really beat a waved kerambit.....

I carry my fox 599 IWB since I'm in the LA area and it's virtually impossible to get a CCW permit here. Great little knife if you're willing to put in the time train with it.

There are some genuinely important issues and interesting areas for discussion arising from the OP and the thread. I think it would be a great thing to get more women and girls involved with knives across the same broad range of interests as men and boys. Does it make or break a woman being sexy or feminine? Well, does it make or break a man being manly or sexy? I guess each is equally legitimate and uninteresting to me, but the thread is about more than that or the personality of the person who started the thread, lovely though that may be. But that doesn't or shouldn't delegitimize the thread nor should being friendly, so some of us might lighten up a bit.
But if i have to see many more pictures like Charlie's, it's me that will be having the nightmares. Washing the car? Brrrrr.

So far, I own six or seven. Waiting on another.... I don't know yet, but I do love my camo SAK and my Opinels (for ease of use.) You?

I lost count how many knives I own, but I have a lot of different types of blades including Fixed Blades/Folders/Machetes/Axes/Hatchets/Tomahawks and what not.

My favorite knife companies are Ontario, Kershaw and Cold Steel.

I might as well post my glamour shot...

I think this may well be a rehab shot. Notice the tat on the neck. Personally I would avoid such pictures of myself or anyone as I like to keep things somewhat anonymous even though we all know that when it really matters, there is no privacy on forums (read Homeland Security, FBI, etc.).

Yes, a pink knife is the common recommendation for the wife/girlfriend and so forth. I personally like the pink Spydie Delica myself or the pink Kabar Dozier folder. SAKs are always good too.

Sorry HJK, I just noticed your post above.

Yes. More common than "the same knife you would get yourself." That's a problem. If I got mrs marc a pink knife she'd stab me with it. And then with her Spyderco Kerambit, Mora Companion, and Dave Shirley-era sambar Northwoods half congress just for good measure.

You look very beautiful in this picture, I wish you were my girlfriend. I also like the camo SAK.

Thanks..this is one of my favorite blades...it has just about everything on it a person could possibly need! I love it and love camo!
