Work Sharp (belt grinder) Knife Sharpener

I just got done purposefully trying to mess up my Vantage Pro S30v extra blade I had to replicate what happened with the Bradley Alias. No chipping even if I flat out held the tip dead on the belt and different angles.
This is a S30v blade with a Paul Bos HT.

Regarding rounded tips..... Like with any sharpener, if you take the tip completely off the belt or media at the end of the pass, you will round the tip. Stones, crock sticks, belts, wheels, whatever. With the WS being a more efficient tool, it will round a tip FAST if you don't pay attention.

Since it's a belt grinder, it's also a whole lot easier and faster to FIX a rounded tip with, compared to manual methods.

Vincent, since you are using the outdoor guide/40 degree method, has this been a problem for you?
no, I think I would have panicked if that happened when I was sharpening my custom handmade one of a kind (therefore irreplaceable) Gordon knife (Post #33).

When doing the 40deg thing - it is kind of a cowardly freehand - as nothing actually is in contact with the guide - it is just reassuring to have the guide there, it is a visual guide, so one can see if there is any wobbling.

It is kind of similar even for the 45deg trick - aligning the difference between the 50deg and 40deg/vertical positions - the guide is not there for any contact - but merely a visual check for any deviation -
remember the belt flexes so cannot be relied on for a "straight" angle-line whereas the guide is rigid and one can see the angle when pulling through.

But it's OK if anyone thinks they are training wheels, and still want to advise me to do freehand ;)
(in which case why even buy the Work Sharp? as Harbor Freight has belt grinders for a mere $30 ) .......

I use the guide every time I do the inital profile on a new blade, or if I really bugger up an edge. Other than that, I free hand it. I've got the 1x30 from HF and I think the Work Sharp is above and beyond in quality and performance. The only time I use the HF on a knife is to thin out an excessively thick edge bevel or repair really bad damage.

Great Customer Service and a great piece of gear

Here's a response from an inquiry. . .

Hello and thank you for contacting me directly.

The free belt offer is only valid with online / website registrations since our website automates the order when you register your product warranty.

But luckily for you, you have bought a quality tool from a small, family owned American company that believes in good old fashion customer service!
I will (of course) take care of you guys, no worries.

I will have two belt kits sent to the address you provided below.

Stay Sharp Out There & thank you for being our customer!

I completely agree about WS customer service. I have had nothing but prompt responses, friendliness, and generosity from Kyle, Betsy, and Harmony at WS.

I gotta give them a call....I bought it about 6 weeks ago and have not received my set of belts for registering

I bought my Worksharp in January of this year and I truly love it. I do have a problem with the ordering process though. Last night I placed an order:
I ordered two six packs of the standard belts at $9.95 each for. $19.90
Fifteen of their new belts at $1.75 each. 26.25.
Shipping for a total of 27 belts and not anything else. 17.27 that is right. $17.27 for 17 belts
For a grand total of. 63.42

I'm sorry but I can't believe that 27 belts cost that much to ship.

RoMo,

That doesn't sound right to me, either. A suggestion: e-mail Work Sharp at info@darex.com and ask them about it. So far, I have seeen that they bend over backwards to help their customers.

Could you use it to sharpen a curved blade like is on the Kershaw G10 tactical speed bump? How is it working on small blades like a 2" blade?

AFAustin,

I know. I was just as shocked as you are, I'm sure. If you don't mind, try to order a similar order as mine, and please let me know about the shipping. You can get to total with shipping without giving any card numbers. I am really disappointed with the shipping costs.

Romo

RoMo,

I did check and, yes, I got $17.22 shipping, UPS Ground. Not good.

But, as I said, e-mail or call them. Ask for Betsy or Harmony in Customer Service, or Kyle, who is the WSKTS sharpener expert. Maybe they would put these lightweight belts in a mailer and ship USPS, which would be cheap.

BTW, just noticed that the WSKTS sharpener price on their website went from $69.95 to $89.95! Supply and demand? But it's still $69.95 at Amazon.

I think you should be able to - especially since the belts are so narrow at 1/2" -
I just saw Noctis3880 answered your same question over in the other Work Sharp thread -
so that's even better - confirmation from real actual usage.

It is only if the curvature is very narrow like serrations that the 1/2" belt would not be "narrow" enough -
I want to clarify the Work Sharp does sharpen serrations -
not by getting into the curvature of the serrations - but by taking off metal from the flat side.

In the instruction manual they even show how to sharpen the narrow inside curve of a gut hook -
WSguthook.gif

which shows how versatile this sharpener actually is.

On the shipping charge issue, I was looking through some recent e-mails with WS customer service, and they said that shipping was usually $5.05 on belts. I was discussing a smaller order than RoMo made, but, like I said, it would be best to call or e-mail them.

I got my Worksharp months ago and I love it. I was amazed how fast I could put a razor edge on my knives. What used to take me hours now takes minutes and the edge is much sharper. I found on some of my knives it's easier to sharpen the tips with the guide off and use little pressure on the belt otherwise the belt will wrap around the tip.
I also got the micro mesh belts. I found they aren't as good as the ones from Worksharp, also all the other grit sizes aren't really that necessary. The 3 belts from Worksharp are fine.
I sent my card in for the free belts and it took over 2 months so for the guy waiting 6 weeks hang in there a little longer.
BTW if you do a search for Worksharp in The Maintenance area you will find Ken Onion has some good things to say about the Worksharp.

It's fabulous on recurve blades. I do my 11" Kabar Cutlass machete on it, and I've done a couple of cheap chinese kukri's with 12" blades on it too.

I don't know about the shipping costs for the belts, but I do know that overall, shipping has gone up dramatically over the last few months. I shipped a short drop point, about 8" oal, in a double padded envelope last month, USPS Priority, to California and insured it for $100. Cost me over $10. I was in shock. Last time I shipped, months ago, a similar package out to California was $7.00 or thereabouts. I know that USPS is usually cheaper than UPS until you get into oversize packages. At least it is in my area.
