Wow, haven't looked at knives for a couple years. Prices seem insanely high now.

History of knife. Over 15 MILLION SOLD that's incredible! And still bucks number one seller. Cool stuff

^^ Consumption is an addiction. Also, keeping up with the Jones' is a thing many adhere to.

Ding, ding, ding!

Debt-based fiat currency. Devaluation, also known as inflation, is what our monetary system is based on. Fiat currencies always fail, and ours happens to be the longest lasting in history. My favorite topic of discussion! I'll end there, however. :)

All the more reason to buy what you want now because honestly inflation should be a lot higher.

When did the goal posts move from Buck 110 is weak to the buck 110 is weaker than a CS XXXX? Unless you're doing something "odd" with a pocket knife a buck 110 should hold up fine. Things that suck don't become icons. But I wouldn't want one weighing down my pocket :p

If you think knives are expensive now... LOL, wait til later. Buy now.

CM, good to see you're still hanging I'm there. I bet you are right. Commodities are not going to sit at generational lows forever. Although, I just read an article saying that 50% of the Chinese steel Mills have to go out of business before steel prices move up off the canvass, and, I'd never bet against the Chinese government ability to keep supporting a dead industry just because that's what they do.

I had one loosen up from brand new dead tight, to slop in every direction just from cutting very small green thorns, on a half hour hike. It wasn't abused at all, my other knives have never loosened up that way, doing the exact same.

Pissing contest. That's what.

surreal, the internets

pertaining to knife prices....doesn't seem they've jumped appreciably in relation to other items, but I've been collecting over a fairly narrow period of time, first in the mid 90's, then over the past couple of years

on a significant tangent....my only Buck 110 is a CMH conversion auto from my dad, so I have not tested it's strength to any real extent

cheers

Honestly, if I'm buying a $30 knife, it is mainly for the coolness factor not super strength or steel approved by NASA. Sure, I'm gonna cut stuff and pry open paint cans, but I'll probably leave it in the drawer when the zombie apocalypse starts and choose something else.

The problem is we've been printing money for years. We are going to have major inflation at some point, so the price of steel isn't just tied to Chinese steel mills. Again, prices aren't too bad right now considering where they should be. If people want things now is the time to buy them.

The real problem is that a generation of over consumers, the baby boomers are now basically consuming only Geritol and depends, so deflation is here for a while. FED is not going to get the magical 2% inflation figure they are looking for so they can raise rates. However, I bet te price of knives rises much more than 2%. We know that.

$150 is the new $60

That, and if your knife has two titanium handles and something that resembles a blade you can charge $600-1000 for it. Even if you haven't been around as long as, or have the tolerances of, a Sebenza...

At any rate, I think that if we look at the distribution of knives at different price points we used to have something closer to normal distribution, but we're now seeing a bit of a skew to the right.

Wait, is this about knife prices or is this an Economics 101 class?

I understand the reason behind your post, but they are tied together. I don't see how we talk about their rise in price or speculate about them going forward without taking about the economy. I don't think it needs to get too detailed, though.

Cold Steel literally doubled their prices,

On what, exactly? Looking at prices I'm not seeing a "literal" doubling on things though I confess I may have overlooked a couple. Maybe the word "literal" doesn't mean what you think it does?
