Yankee Jacks #77 2025

Mine arrived yesterday. What a gorgeous knife. Perfect fit and finish, great ebony wood. Pull on the main blade is a solid 6 to my sensibilities, right around where I like it, with great snap to all three positions. The pen blade, on the other hand, is down right horrible though, which puts a damper on the entire knife for me. No more than a 3 on the pull if I am being generous, no snap to half and no snap to open, slight snap to the close. And this is after a few hours of idly flushing and opening and closing to the point that the oil comes out clear of all debris. I considered a blade delete, but at this point I highly prefer two blades and I have a feeling this knife would see much less pocket time if it were a single blade.

Not sure what I should do as I've never had any problems with a GEC I've owned. Almost every GEC I own has had a "breaking in" period where the knife gets smoother and snappier over time but I feel like the pen blade on this one is too far gone. If it improves I don't think it would by much. I don't want to return it as this knife is pretty close to perfect for me as far as specs go. I've heard of people reaching out to GEC but I've never done that. Any suggestions?

Sad to hear that another one has slipped by QC at GEC. I reached out to my dealer and he had me send it to GEC. They've had it since Saturday and I haven't heard anything from them except to acknowledge receipt of my knife. My knife is the opposite of yours, where my main blade was the culprit.

There's no excuse for this to be happening and makes me wonder what's going on with their quality control.

Not sure if it is worth reaching out to the dealer as there is no way they have any left over for an exchange. I'm leaning toward reaching out to GEC to see if they can do anything. I wish you luck, please do the same for me! lol

last time i reached out to GEC because of an off center 81, i already paid quite a sum for it and did not want to pay any more as it would bring its end cost into ridiculous side of the scale. my other 81s were solid tho. they did ask if i bought from a dealer but i replied no, secondary sadly.

I would email GEC and plead your case. They were very responsive when I messaged them. Sadly they will not do anything for my knife issue. Maybe you will have better luck?

Have it modded and blade delete the pen. You can both remove a useless blade and have the otherwise perfect knife :)

this man gets it!

That might be the move if GEC cant do anything for me, but a secondary blade is a borderline requirement for me to regularly carry a knife at this point. I like having a small package/letter opener with me 😁

i hope they can do something for ya, cause so far it sounds like from all the 77s ive ever got my hands on, 2014,2015,2016, 2017,2018,2019,2022, this years might be even worse than the lighter 2022 pulls. its like their heat treat place is slacking

As long as it is the same place, I can't see that as a reason. I blame blade tang construction, because I have an 87, which is said to be a stretched 77, that has a very bad (light and mushy) action on pen blade, which is exactly from 77. Main blade is fine, though it is from 65. So, again, tang construction, and maybe also spring end's shape. Not the spring tention/thickness, for it is elongated on the 87 compared to the 77, hence both 87 blades should have even worse action, but they are not.

Please share your experience with 87, folks. Let's solve the mystery.

Whatever the case is, it is not acceptable and we shouldn't be giving them a pass on it.

i had mine deleted almost immediately 😂 so i wont be much of a reference as i havent touched my stock version.

The 87 pen is from the 78.

A lot more than spring strength goes into it. How tightly the frame is compressed on the joint and have a significant impact. I'm sure it is a balancing act. I would much rather have an softer snap with no gaps or wobbles than the opposite. Ymmv.

fwiw, I have noticed a good flush being a non negotiable requirement in just about every GEC I’ve ever purchased new. My 78s from the last run, for example, all improved significantly.

I was playing with a couple 38 Half Whittlers today and I realized that I have never had a weak pull on a cam tang blade.

With all the hullabaloo about a few of the 77s having weak pulls, made me wonder if weak pulls are just a risk of the square tang blade and as much art as science to get correct time and again?

I have owned some Queen era S&Ms with weak cam tang pulls that and no snap.

My 38 Special, 81 Moose and secondary blades on the 66 Calf Roper had weak pulls. They are round or cam tangs.

I've checked mine. They seem almost the same. 78’s is about half millimeter shorter. And kick shape differs, but that has nothing to do with tention.

Wonder if second blade has something to do with it. Are single blade versions of 77 better in general?
