You Carry a Knife Because?

Ever since I was a kid, I loved slicing food up with a really sharp knife. I have also learned to appreciate a well made tool and have developed an aesthetic ideal.

I carry a knife as a combination of those three things--it is a work of art and engineering for me to admire, a tool if I need it, and a toy if I want it.
 
I've been using some sort of folder since age 10. My Dad's extremely wise rule was "Until you can sharpen my knife - there's no reason you should have a knife." I suspect he spent a fair amount of time fixing my ( and my younger brother's) - initial efforts.
Self defence has pretty much nothing to do with my knife choices - it's now been 50plus years since the last time I have been threatened with a knife. "Tactical" knives are often what I use simply because they are harder to break. I use my EDU knife because I'm lazy and it saves a lot of steps/ladder rungs back to the truck for the right tool. I pry ,pound , slice and gouge with my knives. At least half the time there probably is a better/best tool for these tasks - but my knife is in my pocket and it's get the job done.
And yes - there is a utilitarian elegance to a well designed and built knife.
 
I have been carrying a balisong since I was in college. That's about 25 years. Although only recently have I been carrying one handed opening folders. A knife was quite useful for the various activities we have in college. Camping, overnight beach sessions, and other outdoor activities.

I can't get by unless I've got a SAK in my pocket.

Even Macguyver couldn't make it without his SAK.
 
Because I can!!!

I started carrying one when I was in 5th grade. Been doing it ever since.

I'd go without underwear before I'd go without my knife.

I'd feel totally naked without a knife and a multitool of some kind on my person.

Only time I don't have them is when I'm sleeping, then they're on my bookcase right next to my bed, along with a fixed blade of some kind, a couple of flashlights, and the keys to my gun safes.
 
I always carry at least two, one clipped in each back pocket, at work or a slippie in my front pocket and a clip on in my backpocket when in civies. Why? It's mans' essential tool, well that and chicks dig it!
 
I carry a blade because I believe fundamentally, you are either someone who carries tools and problems solves their own solutions, or you are someone who relies on others to do this. I think a blade (of some type) is just one of those essential tools of everyday living. That....and evolution didn't give me claws :P
 
When I was a kid maybe 6 or 7 my dad gave me his Ka Bar from 'nam...I carried everywhere with me in my school packs, everywhere. Until some turd stole it at the bus stop, then I bought my first Buck 110 and well I been carrying ever since.

Why?

For cutting of course, whatever needs it.
 
I've been carrying a pocketknife of one sort or another since I was 6. I just feel undressed without one.
 
I carry a knife simply to be prepared in case I need to cut something. My sebbie has actually come in quite handy in college for removing papers neatly from notebooks because I can never seem to use the perforations without tearing the paper. And on a side note the good thing about going to New Mexico Tech is that nobody has batted an eye at me pulling a knife out to use, and a few people even compared theirs with mine.
 
Because its damned hard to chew through rope, even harder to gnaw through the nylon webbing on pfd's in an emergency. ;)

plus if I didn't carry one I'd have to stop biting my nails when I'm nervous. :(
 
I carry knives because I like them. I carry knives because I need them. I carry knives in homage to the long line of humans who lived before me, and through many, many eons of strife and struggle, made everything I enjoy possible.

- because it's a nice tool as well as a good self defense back up to my pistol

- because if I carried a sword the local constabulatory would want to "chat" with me :D
 
I carry it for cut some food like boon or sth,and also,it's a useful tool in my daily life.
 
I carry a knife because it has a handle I can hold in my hand and a sharp blade I can use to cut things up.
