Your favorite SAK.

Now see, I never understood that. Both Victorinox & Wenger are Swiss made.
But sometimes, I hear about folks who would never use a Wenger. Why?
From my limited experience with both companies, I can't see too much difference.

Ironically, it's not a two-way street. I have yet to hear Wenger owners look down on Victorinox.

Am I missing something?

Actually, they're both the same company, now. One bought out the other (can't remember who bought who, though).

I have to admit, I feel the same way -Vic  Wenger :thumbdn: . No reason for it, actually - never owned a Wenger, just something about them I don't like.

Doc

I carry a Vic Swiss Tool on my belt just about everywhere I go. It was a gift for for my 5 year anniversary with the company I worked for until 4 or 5 years ago. It's hardly left my side since then. It's a bit heavy, but I've gotten used to it. The pliers and screwdrivers see the most use at home or work. The knives and saw come out more in the woods. The can opener gets used everywhere.

My favorite is the Hunter. On Victorinox vs. Wenger I'm on the side of Victorinox. Like Doc, I don't own a Wenger, but I do not like them. I've considered a couple of them, but for whatever reason, I get the impression (probably unfounded) that the scales look and feel weaker and less secure than Vic. It is a completely subjective opinion, but it has gravitated me exclusively toward Vic.

Actually, both Wenger and Victorinox are owned by Victorinox now, so perhaps they have taken a look at the line and have upgraded some of the flaws in the Wenger product. On the other hand, maybe they use Wenger as their low end blades.:D

My favorite overall SAK is the Victorinox Camper. It is small enough to carry without notice and large enough, with the tools I require, to do what I need and not be damaged or destroyed.

I'm a big fan of the one arm Trekker right now. Interesting news that Victorinox owns Wenger. Which company came first?

Victorinox came first and was the first Swiss company to be awarded the contract to supply knives to the Swiss army (1890 or 1891 depending on the source). Up to that time, the contract was held by a German company. That contract was eventually split between Victorinox and Wenger about three years latter (1893), when Wenger started to make (some would say copy) the same kind of knives Victorinox had develop. Eventually both companies changed their names to the ones known today.

Took some pictures of mine. Not really sure I can pick a single favourite. The champ was my first (20 years ago) and has seen a lot of use. It's large blade is convex edged and the small blade is thinned to a scalpel edge.

I'm not impressed that the later models of the Workchamp have an extra tool; a small philips screwdriver. That, and the rucksack, have side locks. The Forrester has the linerlock which works on the (larger than usual) flat screwdriver as well as the blade. I prefer the side locks. The white one I bought for my wife. The rehandled one isn't quite finished, I need to polish the scales.

If I can pick three favourites, they are the champ, workchamp and black climber.

Left column, top down:
Workchamp
Rucksack
Forrester

Middle:
Champ

Right Column, top down:
Climber
Spartan
Climber (rehandled)
Spartan (I think, smaller than the other one)

Hi Doc,

This is the first one I've taken the scales off. On this, they just push-fit onto the hinge ends. I removed them with the blade on another SAK. Just a bit of careful prying was all it took.

"Thought you'd want to see this. We have one here in NY and have a few more in-bound from Delemont. It weighs 2lb 11oz and measures 8 3/4" wide. Total implements: 70 (I think). Do you think we should make a pouch for it?"

I was in a store for the first time today that had something similar. Wood scales on a Vic SAK.... complete with logo! I would have snatched it up, but saw a couple of other knives I wanted more.

My favs right now are the OH Trekker, huntsman and Farmer. Yesterday i got the new Spartan Lite. Basically its a regular spartan with a LED and a philips screwdriver. Basically the added layer makes it just a hair thinner than the 4 layer huntsman. The Spartan lites one new layer is the same thickness as the huntsmans scissors and saw layer put together.
I'm actually pretty impressed with the led, makes me want to get the new huntsman lite! lol!
:)

My favorites are the alox soldier, locksmith, parachutist, and my latest is the Aventurer. I wanted a 111mm that was thinner. Trying this one out. For years my favorite was the Tinker. Lost it, replaced it, lost it... the Soldier pretty much replaced it.
