Your favorite SAK.

My favorite was the Explorer; now it's the Explorer Plus (although I carry an Explorer in one of my pkcet organizers when I'm out and about).

A Super Tinker gets the most use, though. I have one in the pocket of my jammies/shorts I wear around the house.

i always sing the praises of the oht but lately i carry and use my huntsman most often. the one i'm always playin with at my desk, though, is the pioneer, so i guess that's my favorite.

I just got a deal on a Ranger, which I like as it has a saw and scissors. While researching the Ranger I found out that the Outrider has a saw, locking blade and scissors on the 111mm frame. I might have to trade off my Trekker now that I've seen that. So many SAK's, so little me :)

Do you guys find any advantage with carrying a black-handled model over a red one. Or just personal preference?

Monocrom I have the OH Trekker and the Rucksaw, both have the same tools except-A) the Ruck has a Corkscrew and the OHT has philips, B) OHT has liner lock blade with thumbhole and the Ruck has a nailnick opening and a button lock.I like both however they both have their strengths and weaknesses. I was doing some carving/whittling this week and intentionally used both as a test. Personally i think the OHT one hand opening is great for general use but the Ruck blade is slightly more maneuverable for precision detailed carving. The OHT spyderco style thumbhole is slightly more awkward when trying to do detailed work/carving. But the same can be said for any knife with that spyderco style hump or even for knife blades with the one hand opening button.

Red can be somewhat easier to spot when you drop it outdoors. Doesn't come close to the Stayglo models though.

Ooops guess i misinterpreted the question.lol.

Yeah red is more visible over black, especially if you accidentally drop it in water.
I wish you could buy the stayglo scales separately, i'd retrofit a pile of my SAKs.

Not necessarily. Since you had mentioned blade shape I chimed in about something different. Besides, even though I happen to prefer the slide lock over the liner locks doesn't make one better than the other. So IMHO it becomes a non-issue. I suppose one could argue that in an extreme survival situation the slide-lock is a little safer, but is it enough to make a difference?

I have a camper, but with a phillips head screwdriver instead of the corkscrew. Not sure if they still have it available, didn't see it on their site. I would figure it's called something other than "Camper". Anyway, best can opener I've ever used and it's what I reach for in the kitchen when I'm at home. That SAK has gone through as many cans of "Popeyes" spinach as I have.

It's my primary woodcarving knife, so it's always riding with me in the woods of Arizona. The saw is perfect for cutting staffs to length and the little blade and awl are indispensable to me for carving. I also tend to use it for gutting rabbits and squirrels.

Thanks Victorinox, love SAK.

I would say it depends on the season. I dropped a red SAK from a tree stand in the fall in Michigan when there were colored leaves all over the ground. Took a lot of rummaging around to finally find it.

I guess it's a Hiker, same as the Camper but with a Philips screwdriver. Both are very nice SAK's. :)

After I typed the orginal reply I thought of exactly the same thing but I let it go. You make a valid point.

I prefer the liner lock myself, plus the flat head locks too, so you can sharpen it to a chisel if you want to, even grind in a wedge for a nail puller.
The matte finish of the red 111s looks too cheap to me, it suits the black ones better. I put an orange paracord lanyard on all my blades when going out to make it easy to spot anyway.

I'm not sure what models I have. I bought a bag of Victorinox knives off ebay that were NASA seizure items. The one I like the best is the hunter I think. Used the scissors to trim the fletch on my arrows and the saw to notch a spot on my work bench to mount a vice. I actual opened a bottle of wine with the cork screw.
How do you tell which model you have? I don't see any name or serial numbers.

Usually, on the box there is a serial number or the knife's name itself. Since you bought yours on eBay, I guess the best way to tell is to check the Swiss Army website or ask here (providing a small description of the SAK, of course).

anything other than a wenger

Now see, I never understood that. Both Victorinox & Wenger are Swiss made.
But sometimes, I hear about folks who would never use a Wenger. Why?
From my limited experience with both companies, I can't see too much difference.

Ironically, it's not a two-way street. I have yet to hear Wenger owners look down on Victorinox.

Am I missing something?
