Your newest addition:traditionals of course!

Not sure this really belongs in this thread but here goes anyway. Just received this incredible GEC 85 mod from J jsdistin . I’m super excited about how it turned out.

Edit - those aren’t gaps at the bolsters, just shadows from my shoddy camera work!

Despite having spent very very many nights outdoors as a child and young adult, I just got my first ever real “camp knife” yesterday:

“The Ideal” was a low-budget brand from Providence, Rhode Island, sold on cardboard displays like the one in this image from the seller I got mine from:

It is a pretty good size for me at 3-3/4”, with a decent heft to it, but as with the others of this brand I have, the blades are ridiculously hard to open, the points are completely rounded off, and only a perfunctory attempt was made to sharpen it in the factory.

(I modified the pen blade on the red one)

It is in excellent NOS condition, considering it has been sitting around for probably 35 years or more. If I can loosen it up a little and get a reasonable edge on it, I may take it with me next time I go camping.

Happy Jacks were made from 1987-1989 in Rosman, North Carolina by Chuck Garlits. He reportedly used 440c stainless for the blades and stainless for the backspring. That's the sum total of my knowledge of the brand. Oh, and he is "Big Daddy" Don Garlits' cousin 🏎️

Its an extremely well made knife. No gaps anywhere. Nice bolster transitions. Nicely recessed/flush pins. Backspring is flush when closed and ever so slightly recessed when open. Very nice, smooth, walk with no half-stop. Excellent snap both directions. The blade isn't centered and it appears that the shield is not pinned. Approx. 3.5" closed. Really pretty bone and nice jigging.
