Your newest addition:traditionals of course!

I don't think so either. That looks fantastic! I'm getting close to making a similar decision - just need to come across "the one" that makes me pull the trigger.

I loved my GECs and Bruckmann, but a work of art that you know is a sure thing is hard to pass up. Being on the kind of budget that requires sacrifices means you learn to play it safe until the right opportunity arrives. Here’s hoping you find your “one” that’s worth the trade or sale.

The covers are coming off this right away. The cel it is a changing.

No name on this one, but I think it's worth $7.

I like a proximally tapered tang.

$7...... That looks a lot like a Sabatier Chef's knife.

Wow, that is beautiful!

Would you please share details?

Quite a start. Hard to imagine where you go next.

Congratulations. 👍
Thank you.

Happened to see it for sale on bladeconnection it’s a knife by Chris Sharp of Oxford Forge out of Florida. Shadow 2 blade trapper with paper micarta handles. CPM-154 Steel. Blade lengths are 3 inches and open length of 7.25. Weight is 4oz.

One of a kind. Found it featrued on his instagram account as well.

Per his description:
Shadow patter trapper with cpm 154 blade and spring, titanium, mill releaved liners with file work, shield inlay on both sides of knife, Ivory pepper micarta scrapes.

Was a little used maybe. The blade edges are a bit off near the choil. No fault of the maker of course maybe previous owner(s) tried to sharpen. Also a faint scratch near tip of the drop point. I'm sure I could have a professional buff it out maybe. Not going to risk messing anything up on this myself.

I also noticed both blades had a spot on the same place where the edge must be hitting the bump on the inside of the spring when they snap close. I was able to smooth them out and I guess I’ll just have to be careful when closing the blades as I would have no idea if it is something that can be adjusted. I suspect it travels a bit too much when it snaps into position.

*(update - I reached out to Chris Sharp via instagram and he responded - on a Sunday morning no less - with his personal phone number and asked me to call him and he can tell me how to fix it saying it's an easy fix. How's that for great service? I'm blown away. Turns out it's a normal thing to happen as the spring breaks in. All I need to do is just keep touching up the blade a bit until it no longer makes a mark on the edge when it snaps shut. That's kind of what I had started to do so glad to now know a little bit more about such knives. Chris was great to talk to as well. I will definitely be finding ways to acquire another of his amazing knives. He also remembered making the one I now own and said it was his only paper micarta knife he's ever made).

On a bit of a bender last few days. Just got this one. Should arrive soon. Already have the sheath that goes with it.

I'll be looking for a nice saddlehorn single blade and definitely some type of barlow (have my eye on a GEC 152121 saw cut osage but those prices are stupid money these days) maybe a few other styles eventually. Most of the fun is in searching and seeing all the stuff out there.

I'm going to have a lot of explaining to do when these arrive at home, lol. I've got 4 on the way including this beauty. Can someone explain to me why GEC sells for 3X the price on the secondary markets? I mean, seriously WTF, Why? Is this like a Beanie Babies thing or what? And yes, I recently bought 2 GECs.

theres a small group of hyper consumers (us) keeping demand above supply. So too many dollars chasing too few GEC.

Just one more - Dr T...

The steel was listed as "unkown". Anyone have a good guess who might be more familiar with David Taber? I would think it's CPM 154 or ATS 34 but who knows? Not sure how he distinguishes the steel. How would I even tell? Is Dr. T. is on instagram, I might get the courage to simply send him a quick note and ask.

I think this is a picture of the actual knife on his instagram...

and I think he used to be on here but hasn't been active for a while. @3638dtaber

*update - Dr. T responded on instagram. It is indeed CPM-154. Should be a COA with it which ACK did mention in the posting. Maybe they just didn't read it to see what the steel was. lol.

I just wonder if it's because they like to collect and keep or simply acquire and flip for a profit. I am in the first category with the collection I built. I would probably only sell some if I get really bored with them or if something else came along and I needed to offset the cost I guess. I'm not judging either way. Just reminds me of when people would camp out at stores waiting for the next delivery of beanie babies convinced they would skyrocket in value and fund their retirement some day. Pretty sure none of them have retired early.

I think it’s a tight market for a few reasons. The pandemic pushed collecting/hobbies to new levels and slipjoint knives are in fashion right now with a younger crowd. But it only takes a few guys like me to really dry up supply. For example I’ve got about 24 of the GEC 62 pattern, 12? 78s, and so on across every pattern I like and can find. That adds up fast if you have in demand patterns like 15s with maybe only 400 made at a time. The market has gotten a lot better due to the economy in the past few months, things are sitting on the exchange and prices are coming down because the knives aren’t selling at the inflated rates, but it will be a gradual decrease. Some guy will take a small hit over what he paid to sell and the next guy will do the same and so on.

Edit: didn’t mean to go so far off topic. Here’s a GEC 62 I traded into and haven’t posted yet. 620213 Elk. The second coolest 62 I own but still not as cool as my tomato whittler.

I can understand that, I didn't really start collecting until the pandemic started. I now have 63 knives plus a balisong trainer, lol. And quite a few accidental scars on my hands. I pretty much carry a knife every day now.
