Your Two Cents!

I was very surprised to learn that the "coin for a knife tradition" is known in other parts of the world as well.

I'm dutch myself, but my family on my mothers side is from Indonesia, and from them I learned you should always give a copper coin of some sort to someone who gifts or sells you a knife, or it will bring bad luck to you and everyone else who owns it after you (of course with that last part was usually suggested that your premature death was somehow caused by said damned knife).

I believe this Indonesian tradition stared originally just for the traditional Kris, but was later used for all kinds of knives. Or at least it was in my family

When do you think that box was printed, Codger?

Here is a coin of the realm (another from my birth year), attached to a very nice letter from a sister Forumite!
Thanks, and you are welcome, Sarah!

Perhaps you can zoom the coin date. It looks like 1975 on my screen, but the box style matches 1967-68 in the regular production of that pattern. The 897UH. They didn't use the hinged box like that long. The knife pictured below is serial 18537, an early one. That pattern began in 1967.

ETA: Looks like 1979 to me.

I used to always give a coin back in the day when I first got involved with knives many moons ago, when I got involved in the more modern knives nobody seemed to do it, I have been seriously lax in this area in recent years, I just found a bunch of coins from when I went back home to Hungary in '06. So I'll be sending out a few for the knives I've received in the last year. ;)

I try to remember to do that but sometimes I forget, the "custom" of doing that I learned from watching the movie "The Edge" with Anthony Hopkins when he received that lovely folder as a birthday gift, made by well known Canadian knife maker, Brian Lyttle, also a friend I met at Ashokan a few times now.

He's since lost a lot of weight and become quite a bit healthier in the process

It seems that Jonathan has struck again! Wednesdays mail had a suspicious feeling envelope in the pile  It felt a bit heavy for the thickness, and what is this ring worn into the paper? The return addie didn't ring any bells at first glance...But alas, what a joy and a pleasure that was contained within :D

I sat shaking my head, and smiling at the same time...

My very first standing walking liberty 1/2 ! I love it! I really can't thank you enough Jonathan (jon_slider), this gesture has me tickled pink. You won that "Dog Chew Puukko" in my GAW, and have carried and used it  which in itself is reward enough for me, but this coin has really made my day. May kismet and karma smile upon you my friend :)
Thank You!

Thank You! Duane.
You are as generous with your gratitude as you are with your gifts.
And I am as humbled by your thanks as I am by your gift.
It is indeed heart warming to hear of your appreciation for the token, and if I may say so, I appreciate the Puukko at least as much as you the coin.
This entire experience has been nothing but fabulous.
And btw, whatever you did to sharpen the Dog Chew Puukko, is amazing. It still slices tomatoes, better than most of the knives I own, even after battoning firewood.
I remain ever grateful, and smile every time I touch or think of this beautiful stag handled tool. And that is multiple times per day.

Again and again! From Jon once more!!
Some fine old American silver - these with a winged theme, and thoughtfully, with my birth year! Thank you Jon!!
I am feeling pretty "wingy" actually, waiting (not so) patiently for my SFOs to materialize!

A nicely executed traditional gesture!!

Thank You Charlie!
I really appreciate your kind, thoughtful, and unexpected gift of this beautiful Mirror polished Carbon Steel Remington, in one of my favorite colors. The Mercury Dime is one of my favorite coins and just a small token to Cut my sense of obligation to reciprocate.

The Standing Liberty is one of the most rare and valuable of the USA silver coins, somewhat befitting the rarity of your most generous gift of this Soupbone Charlow. Just a token to Clip my sense of indebtedness, albeit ineffectively, for your great kindness and consideration. I remain ever grateful to you for this Charlow.

Here are the other sides of Jon's gift coins, showing the Standing Liberty he refers to. I pass many Eagles when I drive down to Washington along the Fraser River Delta, to mail out the knives I have produced, so I was taken with the Eagle side of the coin.
There is something poignant about the worn yet strong Liberty on this Coin - think America . . . .

The other side of the Soup Bone appreciation coin, Jon, is that it gives me great pleasure that people enjoy these knives!!
Glad you like it!!

These knives used to be very common here.

I saw one in the market last week, quite regret not buying it now :)

I found another of these today, and bought it this time :)

Thanks, and you are welcome, Sarah!

Very nice. I also received a special coin from Pertinux, posted at the same time I think :) She's since replaced the coin with a Radio Knife ;)

Reckon I owe you one too Charlie, for the lovely Diamond Jack you sent me

Lots of friends there, Brad! I especially like the wooden nickel!!
