I was very surprised to learn that the "coin for a knife tradition" is known in other parts of the world as well.
I'm dutch myself, but my family on my mothers side is from Indonesia, and from them I learned you should always give a copper coin of some sort to someone who gifts or sells you a knife, or it will bring bad luck to you and everyone else who owns it after you (of course with that last part was usually suggested that your premature death was somehow caused by said damned knife).
I believe this Indonesian tradition stared originally just for the traditional Kris, but was later used for all kinds of knives. Or at least it was in my family
