Zero Tolerance 0801S110V Limited Run

Envelope from KSF - cross country, but no issues.

Back to the detent- One of the reasons I love the 0801, and the primary reason that this is my third version, is the easy and smooth action. Well, this action is smooth, but it damn sure isn't easy! I've got lots of flippers and I know that each has its own kind of sweet spot for deployment. This one is killing me and it is so disappointing because I love the knife in every other respect.

In comparing it to my other 0801s, I notice that there is a strong secondary grab/click when the blade returns fully to the handle. That phenomenon isn't present with the other two. They fall with just enough "hold" to be sufficiently secure. This one has an additional last "grab" into the handle.

Question - is there anything KAI (or someone who knows what they're doing) can do to adjust this knife to replicate the action of my others?

The strength of the detent is very subjective and will always be a talking point. I like mine strong to very strong. Others like them week almost to the point of falling open. Its very hard for a manufacturer to please everyone with the strength. I'll usually put a drop of nano oil on the ball to help if it's overly tight. You can also bend the lockbar slightly to achieve the desired result. However bending must be done in very small increments. Or just send it in.

Ive had several ZT's that had a very strong detent that after spending some time breaking in turn out perfect. I prefer them this way it makes for a great flipper when it settles in. If after you spend some time with it its still not to your liking send it in, Im sure they can make it lighter.

Mine came with a pretty strong detent, by I like it that way. It means it will flip well every time. Although my girlfriend struggled to open it, but she has the finger strength of the average capuchin monkey. :D

Now that ZT has gone to more flipper only knives I think the strong detent trend is going to continue as they no longer have to balance thumb stud opening and flipper opening on the same knife. My 0562 has one of the strongest detents I've felt in awhile. Most experienced users with flippers prefer a strong detent because the buildup of pressure ensures a more reliable opening in all conditions/methods.

That said there's two things you can do, but I doubt ZT would do for you, and you'll void the warranty, possibly ruin the knife etc. You can reduce the lock bar tension. This is actually the opposite of a trick I frequently use because most knives IMO have too weak of a detent. The other option is to round the edge of the hole in the blade that the detent drops into. By knocking the sharp edge off you can usually make the detent effectively feel weaker. I'd imagine you could do this with a dremel and probably some type of abrasive cone shaped bit. Both methods carry the risks. If you make the lock bar tension too weak you compromise the locking strength, if you remove too much material from the blade hole, you can't put it back. Honestly, I think this is one of the big issues with frame/liner locks, companies have proven it's very hard to get consistent lock bar pressure and amount of detent engagement into the hole in the blade. As a result we usually see a wide range of detent strengths across various models even from high end production knives.

We see a lot of variation in detent strength even in the same model and I've always wondered if they use a machine to bend the lock bar initially to a certain point or under so much pressure, or if it's done by hand subjectively.

Yes, I paid for Priority shipping too. :(
The knife inside looks okay, the box looks like hell.

Usually we send higher dollar knives in a box, especially if someone pays for priority shipping. I'll have a talk with our shipping lady on Monday.

We we use padded envelopes a lot. Well over 99% arrive safe, sound and not kicked around. It is a constant area we are trying to improve.

I am am very sorry yours was damaged. Glad the knife was ok.

No worries Derrick, mistakes happen. I too am glad the knife is alright.

Got mine yesterday from Kershawguy. I love the 0801 and this model is probably my favorite so far. The action on mine was a touch stiffer on this than my acid wash 0801. And the detent is harder. But not bad. Just different. I was worried it was going to be a little plain, but it turns out that's what I like most about it. Love the way the stonewashed handle feels. It does give it a good grip, hard to explain. I dig this model. Another home run. Only thing that sucks is I was not going to get the 0808 until now.

Also purchased one from Kershawguy, and it also has a very strong detent. Once it fires, though, wow, it flies open to about 50% lockup. Strange smooth spot on the lockside...on the slab adjacent to the lockbar.

I got mine and the detent is ridiculously strong. Anyone else get one with something like this?

Yes, my detent is also ridiculously strong. Seems common from the other comments in this thread. I love the stonewashed simplicity though...awesome!

One thing of note is that the frame is a bit more "finished" than my regular 801. The edges are a bit softer and, as mentioned, the stonewashed finish is quite nice. My serial number is 0118 and my detent is much stronger than my Elmax 801. This is by far my favorite variation of this knife. Kudos to ZT and thank you Knives Ship Free

Still waiting for mine! Its stuck at a USPS hub for 2 days now! WTF! I am enjoying coming to this thread to get my fix though! Keep the pics coming please!!

The post office has really upped their game in the last year, but we still regularly see things that sit in a hub for days or route all over the country before finding their home.

Remember, this is a "business" run by politicians.

I've never seen a detent hole like this. Is that what they are supposed to look like? It has a larger shallow hole then a smaller hole that goes all the way through.

What does everyone think about this knife vs the 0562CF? I'm trying to decide between the two.
