0560 blade completely trashed, what are my options?

Just curious. Did the person cutting not get shocked?

I have to imagine the heat treat on it is ruined a good ways back from the chip. Not sure how comfortable I would feel using it if it could be salvaged.

I checked Kershawguy and another vendor that sometimes has new old stock - neither of them have 0560s left.

Nope, they didn't get shocked somehow.

Crap. Thanks for checking.

Shame. Glad nobody got hurt. Gives blade fusion a whole new meaning.

KnifeWorks has the 0560BLK in stock. Same as your 0560 but with a black DLC coated blade. Coating holds up very well to use.

I was looking for one of them a few months ago, I'd almost rather just save up for an XM-24 if I have to drop $280 on a knife I already basically have, still hoping ZT can do something for me though. I found some blems on Ebay too but even those are going in the lower to mid 200s, I think I got this oen for $215 from KershawGu

They are going to pay whatever route I decide to go. I really hope ZT can help, the 560 is really the perfect knife for me and I don't want to have to buy another model with slightly different blade sizes and ergonomics.

Have you handled an 0562?
Really is a sweet knife...

Like others have said try a 0562 on for size. I find the ergos better than 0560 and it's little more compact for $200 everywhere.

Or a good bit less if you don't mind one second hand from the Exchange.

Another vote for a 562. Mine is CF and it is an amazing knife!!

I thought they were covering the cost of repair/replacement?

They are, but I meant I'd rather just get the cash for a comparable one and put that towards the XM-24 instead of that much money going toward the same knife. Might put a feeler out in the WTB forum.

I haven't tried the 562, but just looking at the grips I never had a good feeling, I literally love everything about the 560 and have carried it every day. I love the texturing and the size, it's all perfect to me.

The warranty isn't invalid. The $30 blade replacement doesn't apply to discontinued and LE models - because they don't have surplus parts for these.

I'm just going on what I was told when I called them for a different issue about three months ago. She told me the model is no longer in production so my warranty no longer applies. So she gave me wrong information then? Not surprising. She was very eager to hang up. But it doesn't help much if I can't get the parts anyway.

Good point about the heat treat I didn't think of

Had the same thing happen!,,, guy installed a plug on end of cord,,, spooled it off roll,, plugged it in then took my knife and cut the cord!!!,,, Duuuhhhhh!!!!,,,, oh yea he was an electrical engineer friend of mine!!😂😂😂hard to live that down to!!!

I have a feeling someone isnt getting a christmas gift this year. I have no advice that hasnt been said. But i am sorry that happened.

Hold one before you buy it. Great knife, but had an almost instant hot spot for me.

I agree. I have both 561 and 562 and I don't think the 562 can replace the 561 in every way. The contoured 3D machined handle earns a big plus to ZT 0561. And for some folks, bigger is simply better.

OP - search online for ZT 0560. There seems to be one site selling it new for two bills. It is not the flea bay although I am not sure whether it is legit (never bought anything from it).

If the person had gotten shocked there wouldn't be the hole in the blade. Electricity takes the path of least resistance and in this case when they cut thru it was the neutral or ground wire. To get shocked it would have gone thru their body and out something touching ground or a grounded object and wouldn't have arched and blasted the hole in the blade.

As for the heat treat, that probably depends on how long it sparked for and how quickly the arching stopped. If it had been a properly working GFI circuit, it should have popped near instantaneously and I doubt there would be that damage. A breaker may have popped very quickly or not at all depending on how many amps it was rated for and how much load was on the circuit. The age and quality of breaker also likely effect the speed. I'd bet reflexes yanking the knife away probably stopped things and not a breaker popping. Anyways, if it happened in a few milliseconds I doubt the surrounding metal got hot enough to mess with the temper much. Though it looks bad up close, I have a feeling the damage would be worse for enough heat to be created to effect a sizeable portion of the blade a noticeable amount, though that's a guess and you would have to try it to actually know.

A regrind to thin the blade out some to clean up the sides and bring the edge back would be easy for the regrind guys. It would make the blade a bit narrower but not a ton and could have much better cutting geometry depending on your normal usage and how much it's thinned out. I would imagine the worse case scenario would be that maybe a 1/4" or so would get a burr or flat spot a bit easier than the rest of the blade but likely no worse than a cheaper Kershaw with a lesser steel.

I guess it would depend on how much you like the knife, how much the regrind costs, and how much you're wanting a new knife as well as how big a lesson you're wanting to teach. If they give you enough for a new knife it would be nice of you to ask if they want the knife as it would probably still be the nicest knife they ever own. And a lot of people would probably keep using it as is and realistically it wouldn't make a bad glove or tool box knife even for a knife nut.

Of course take all this with a grain of salt as it's mostly a half educated guess. Maybe others will have an opinion as well. Good luck whatever you decide to do.

Having a hard time finding any for sale, can you give me more hints or leave me a comment with it?
