0770 CF production question

Nice, poolhustler. Thanks for those photos! The 0770CF sure looks like part of the family even if it is a featherweight by ZT standards. I can't wait to see what ZT has in mind for its next entry into the lightweight category. And like I've said, I'll never give up hope that ZT will make a licensed version of the 3.0" XM-18. What a knife that would be.

So, that would be like saying that you would be holding out for an RJ Martin Overkill, despite having the ZT 0600 readily available? In my mind, what has been produced so far is about as close as it will get, except for the size.

The size is what I'm after. :)

ZT has proven that they can successfully compete in the lightweight tactical category with the 0770CF and they already have a relationship with Rick Hinderer. What could be more natural than bringing those ingredients together in their next lightweight offering?

Yes! :)

It looks like they changed the grind on the 0770CF. It doesn't go as high as the 0770

Poolhustler,

How would you describe the differences in carbon fiber texture between the 0770CF, 0777 and 0560CBCF?

Hey Ram.... The CF is similar and different. Looks to be similar or the same material, but the 0560 and 0777 are curved while the 0770 is flat. Same gripiness or texture if you will.....

Oh yeah. Didn't really notice that. Could come in handy for clamping the blade on some guided sharpening systems. The finish on the 0770CF is also a heavier stonewash than on the 0770. I like the heavier stonewash finish - looks more like the same finish on the recently released plain-edged tanto Blurs.

Got mine today :D I can't really add any more to the discussion. The pics posted so far are better than what I could take.

I did notice the backspacer and removal of the jimping from the liner lock.

The CF is smooth but feels a little grippier than the aluminum on the 0770.

One pleasant surprise is that the assisted opening of the 0770 CF is faster than on my 0770. More like what I expect from a ZT (and similar to my 0350 and 0566). That makes me wonder even more about the 0770 and whether it is defective. Unless I flick it really hard or snap my wrist while flipping it, it only depolys about 2/3 of the way.

Anyway the 0770 CF is almost exactly what I was hoping for and feels much lighter than the 0770. The only thing I would change is to add some texture to the CF in order to improve the grip.

Thanks Russ. I think you hit it with the curvature of the 0777 and 0560CBCF adding more grip but overall a similar texture. I'll know more about my perspective of the three on Monday.

What I've noticed most is the lack of any QC issues with ZT. Boring ZT turning out perfect specimens. :) I have yet to send one back for warranty work although I've asked for and gotten spare torsion bars just as a proactive measure. ZT quality is top tier along with Spydercos from Taichung and LionSteel. Of course, CRK is still top dog for production but they're more mid-tech.

Does some body know where they have one left in stock??? Need to have one right now! :D

True. A full custom built to the tolerances Chris incorporates in his knives would cost an arm and leg as well.

IMO, ZT is truly one of the top production knife manufacturers. That's why I'm so pleased to finally be able to own and carry one of their products. :) My only regret is that there isn't anyone left from ZT to hear me say that. But that's just the way the cookie crumbles.

Why doesn't the 770 have a symmetrical carbon fiber pattern? Doesn't bug me too much but I'm noticing that in the picture it tends to have strips of unevenness.

I have the same issues as well. It's hard to fire, often would not fully deploy, not locked. I was pissed butfigured I'll deal with it later, either sell it or send it back.

You must be used to carbon fiber stickers on the spyderco Taiwan knives.

Got mine today. I really like it. F&F is excellent, including the CF. No inconsistencies in the CF pattern in mine. I knew the weight, but had forgotten how light 3.1oz is. Very pleased.

My 0770 deploys all the way with the SpeedSafe assist. If yours isn't opening all the way, I'd guess it's either a broken torsion bar or overtightened pivot. If you contact ZT's warranty department, they'll send you a replacement torsion bar at no charge. If you're not comfortable swapping it out yourself, you can send the knife in to them, and they'll do it for you at no charge (although you will have to pay shipping to get the knife to them). If it's just an overtightened pivot, just get a good T8 Torx wrench and loosen it.

all your points are valid but a $100+ knife should have gone through some QA testing. This was bought direct from retailer, not 2nd hand.

Shoulda, coulda, woulda...things happen to all companies. That "a $dollar amount knife should x, y, z" argument is not really a good one. All companies have a few issues that get past QC, the more important point is that the company itself is willing and ready to correct anything wrong if given a chance. To a majority of people here, a $100 isn't considered a bank breaker, and in the end it is still a production knife, made by humans (which are prone to error). Do you know that the specific knife you have was not "QA tested"? If so, how? It's not a big deal, really...I promise.
