2" x 72" Belt Grinder kit $369.99

It blows my mind how someone could purposely screw so many people out of their hard earned money and not get their ass thrown in jail. I was looking at these and was going to buy one as soon as I had the money, well I sure am glad I didnt have the money right away.

Valcas1, Great Lakes Water Jet was the first hing that popped in my mind also when all of the talk about getting some made started. I hope you guys get squared away, and that Wils bad karma catches up with him and gives him a nasty bite in the rear.

I know this is a little off topic but I was also wondering about those no weld grinders or other diy multifunctional grinders.

Well I feel for those that got taken by that thief. And if it can help in any way I say we take his grinder design and give it away to anyone who wants it for the cost of the steel. I will gladly cad a working prototype for free, I want absolutely no money for my time involved. While I will gladly post the cad files here (2d files which are DXF or DWG files) and anybody can go get these cut by there local steelshop. But it would be best if we could get someone to have a shop do these in bulk which should cut costs considerably I believe. Right now it appears the only thing needed to do is weld upright to baseplate and weld two blocks that hold hinged part for tracking. Oh and thread the hole in the plate that holds the upper idler. Hope thats clear, Oh and all metal is 1/2 thick meaning the tooling arm is 1.5 inches thick. This might be alittle heavy, of course this is still in the preliminary design phase.

I am with you there Norcal....... If I did something like this ..... [which I never would] .... I'd be in jail the next day. :eek:
I can't understand it either. :confused:

I have been following this thread with interest........ at first because I was thinking of getting one.... now because I just hope you guys that got screwed somehow get some relief / justice. :thumbup:

I've been lurking this thread and haven't commented. I realize that there is a lot of angst here and that a lot of people are out their good hard-earned cash. But before producing a bunch of these, has anyone tested this design out to see how well it functions? If not, you could be throwing good money after bad. I think there was already a comment about the tracking system being kind of funky. . .

Just emailed a guy who was one of the few who got one of these although I believe he was missing some parts. At anyrate he actually managed to get his up and running but he mentioned a few bugs. Hopefully he will chime in here with some input.

Alright this thing is slowly coming along, all I need from you guys is ideas on how to make this the best it can be. I plan to now use a 56c face mounted motor exclusively. I will probably use a 3 phase motor to make it variable speed. I believe I have a 56c framed motor in my shop somewhere, does anyone know if they are all the same. IE if I measure mine will they all be the same??
From what it looks like to me I think this has the potential to be a very easy to bolt together grinder with only drilling one hole, tapping one hole and welding in three places. But one could easily bypass the welding and drill and tap instead with a handrill.
I plan to be assembling one of these by the Holidays to be the guini pig so to speak.
So who is with me on taking this design from the thief and giving it to the masses.
I talked to my local steelshop to day and they said they will gladly laser it for me when its ready. Once this is done you can do the same, keep the money in your hometown so to speak.
Chris
PSS I plan to get all my idlers, contact wheels etc. from http://www.midwestknifemakers.com/
PS If your with me say Aye

I say what should be done is this. everyone that has parts or a grinder put your heads together and get it all drawn up in cad and maybe do some 3d models which i would gladly do for you. and then these plans get put up for sale and the money will go to the people that got scammed. thy might not get all their money back but anything is better then nothing. sell the plans for like 10 or 20 bucks and i bet lots of people would buy them. if you want me to talk to my boss about having the shop do the machining i can and i bet he would give you a good price. it would not be something i would like to do on my free time as i have my hands full already but the shop could take it on and plus we have a really good laser cutting place close by that gives us an amazing deal.

As one who almost got taken in by this, I am all for CAD drawings, plans and whatever. I wish I had something to contribute but I don't know the first thing about these types of software. I think putting together a plan with a parts list is a great idea, sort of an open source belt grinder project, wouldn't that be nice. Maybe it could get a sticky in shop talk or something.

I like the idea of plans, but I think the ultimate poke in the eye would be to make them free and openly available. Open source. Of course, I'd be amenable to anything pretty much, but I thought I would put that out there to ponder.

You could always do a "donation appreciated but not necessary" type theme for the plans. I bet more people would donate than not..But I could be wrong. I could draw the grinder up too but I need something in the pictures for scale as I can only guess. Like a machinist scale on top of one of the parts.

That's a great idea bhyde. Can someone who received parts take photos with a ruler used as a scale? That would be optimal.

There is a certain Kharma justice in having the package be free with a donation accepted for those that got screwed (Though I dont want to handle the donations). I am pretty much done with the grinder drawings, just tweaking it up now. Hoping to get the parts cut in a week or so. So far all one needs to do is

1.drill 1/4 cross hole for bolt, and then tap 1/2 hole for upper tracking/tension wheel.
2.weld or drill/tap two side plates to long arm.
3.weld or drill tap this area
Lastly Bolt the grinder together.

Aye, as time & $$ allow.

I say if 'blindhog' is gonna do this......... let him do this the way he wants to do it. If he asks for suggestions, ideas, feedback, whatever....... then give it. :)

IF, he wants to do it for free......... that is how it should be.

IF someone wants to send $$ to the guys that got screwed....... send it on.
I think that is a stellar idea, BUT it should be separate from what 'blindhog' is doing..... if that is indeed how he wants it. :thumbup:
~~~~~~~~~~~
On a separate note:
Somebody needs to let us know how we can get $$$ to those who got screwed..... if we want to send some.
JT, are you up for gathering that info???
I am one of the people that got shafted to the tune of 623.71. But, It was my mistake. I want Wil to pay me, not the generous people on the board.
I would be interested in finished plans. I already purchased a 2hp 3ph motor and VFD, still sitting on the floor.
As a side note, I did finally today talk to the detective in charge of this matter and they are moving forward albeit slowly.
Ummmmm I've mentioned before that there are open source drawings and cut sheet on Don Fogg's site for a similar grinder... just trying to save y'all some time and energy.
If your talking about the plans for the KMG clone, well um I have built one and its not a bolt together grinder. The 9 months of pain I went through building that thing is what attracts me to this grinder. If there is another bolt together grinder plans you are referencing I would love to hear it, I think we all would.
Can you do me a favor and tell me whether or not your motor is a face mount type. If it is let me know the spacing between the bolts. I would like to make this for a face type motor and need to know if yours is the same as mine.
