Things are getting interesting, I'm tempted even though I was a Swaybackite...
I believe what you say about the stag (it is a chancy material)so I would have gone for green jigged bone, but now...
Will the blades be long pull? any idea of blade thickness? Most Queen D2 is fairly thin.
When the final specs are sorted I might well join, very impressive project!

Haven't worked out the nick on the Wharnie yet. We would of course prefer it to be long pull.

I imagine the stock thickness will be 3/32"/3mm(that number was not pulled out of thin air, I measured the main blades on 3 Queen knives.):)

...
The big reason I would prefer ATS-34 is for $7.50 more we would basically have a custom "File & Wire" knife
...

Last play for ATS-34!

I see ATS-34 a a higher end steel than D2
I can get D2 with any Queen knife.
But I need to spend a whole bunch more to get a knife with ATS-34.
I am alread spending significantly more than I ususally spend on a knife, so the extra $7.50 is minor (NO complaints!)
It is more stain resistant than D2, and will not patina to a soft grey, and will retain the bright stainless.
The polish is finer on ATS-34, as D2 is more difficult to work
ATS-34 is much much easier to sharpen and reprofile.

The stag seems to be a done deal. You guys are going to have to take my word on the fact that this stag is some of the finest I have seen in 3 to 5 years for a few more days.

Not only was it offered, the person is going to match each handle set and get the back of it flat and at the right width and thickness in hopes it will not be ground on too much when put together. That is quite a generous gift of material and time.

I will be posting a picture of an example when I get one and everyone can form their own thoughts.

Wow!

Wow is for sure. Thatps super nice. He should really get our sincerely gratitude and a free knife for all his work.

ATS-34 and D2 steels are equal but different IMO.

My reaction is that your fervor and requests are admired and appreciated...but the numbers don't lie....many more people wanted D2 or had no opinion than those that wanted ATS-34....Gus and I have no problem with it either way.

I think it will not be a good idea to try and put a long pull on a wharncliffe blade in a knife this size. It clashes with the arched back of the blade.

Depends what they come up with for the wharnie shape....it will be laser cut.

Don't get me wrong. I love the Swayback pattern, am carrying a Case CV today.

Now for the reality, we would not be able to have a run of 50-60 swayback knives from Case and they are the only ones right now making the pattern in production.

It just was not in the cards. I am glad a pattern was chosen that offered some wiggle room, if the swayback had been chosen we would be back to square one about now choosing a pattern that could actually be made for us. :D.

Don't loose track of the fact that this is a club knife rather than an individual choice with the members making the major decisions for the most part by majority. Heck personally I would have rather had a big ol' sunfish. ;).

Also keep in mind that 4 manufacturers were contacted(Great Eastern, Canal Street, Kershaw, and Queen) and only one of them was interested in building us what we wanted.

Also keep in mind what Gus wrote in the bolded portion. Usually, stuff designed by committee sucks....in this case, it appears that it will not suck.

I think a D2 and stag barlow will be very nice.:D

Wouldn't that depend on which side the nick is cut. If we did opposite sides for each blade, then it wouldn't be a problem.

Great Balls A Fire!!! I'm gettin the jitters. This sounds great!!

We know Gus ;) , don't you have enough Sunfish/Elephant Toenail patterns already?:);):D

This is where the rubber hits the road, in the commitment phase.

I just wanna say one thing in regards to majority rules thinkin', it's not fair to the people who actually pay for the knives, havin' the final decisions based on polls which included people who in the end don't commit but their opinions still influenced the final outcome.

I hope I'm wrong but every year we scramble, (actually it's 3 or 4 of you guys who take up the slack) in the end because of drop outs who said, "I'm down/in for one no matter what" but in the end either they forget, lose interest or just didn't really care.

I gotta dump the bad Karma and spread happy thoughts, sorry if I sounded like a bit of a downer.:( turn that frown upside down :)

Whatever the final decision is, I am in for one.....................

That being said. I am (personally) already committed to buying 2. I'll buy
up to 3 more if peeps start dropping out for whatever reason.
I don't want STeven and Gus to be stuck with so many extras.
Especially after all the work they've put into it this collab.

Stag (Awesome)
D2
Equal Clip and Wharncliffe Blades
Long Pulls
BFC 2009 Etched (either one)
That about sum it up?

mike

I want one, whatever the committee comes up with. So far, all sounds good to me.

Originally, was in favour of bone handles even though I love stag because stag handles are a bit of a lucky draw but since Bastid has found a kind donor of good stag, which will be prepared properly, let's go for stag.

The dynamic duo, Gus and STeven, are doing a yeoman job. (the yeoman reference was for Steven:D). I will be in for this one.
