2009 Fishing Season PIC Thread

Bluegill,

Caught these beauties on Friday with my buddy Dave. Yummy!!!!

Bluegill and Asparagus! We have similar tastes! I think fresh caught bluegill is better than perch. Nothing like frying up some fresh fillets that still have blood in the veins!

Porcupine,

Bluegill and Asparagus! We have similar tastes!

Not only were the fish fresh caught, but, those asparagus were fresh picked from my garden out back. Truly a home cooked meal. Did you have any luck with fish this year?

I see this a lot :)

71 lb Blue and 28lb blue with the girl. Both caught on a trotline. The big one in Feb. and the smaller in early May. The girl on a feeder creek to Ft. Gibson Lake.

Those are nice catfish Matt. I caught a couple today that went 10 lbs or so. I promise some day I'll join the rest of the 21st century and get a camera.

I'm on fire! The ocean has been good to me this year. A lingcod, Black rock fish and 2, 9+" abalone.

Henry,

I didn't plan on going out today, but my buddy gave me a call....and the rest is history. I hear you folks have some big-ole-shellcrackers down in NC? How big do they actually get? Are you a pan-fish-er-man?

Thanks,

Bob

They can get big if you go to the right places to catch them. I've caught several 1+ pounders. Panfish and catfish are what I usually fish for. I'll catch all the panfish I can, keep the big ones, and then use the smallest ones catfish bait on trotlines and limb lines. Works out pretty good most of the time.

That's a pretty big size bluegil....sounds like you've got a good system going.

Have Fun!!

The fish are top shelf especially the lingcod(bigger one). The abalone are one of the world's premier delicacies. People put it in the same class as lobster but I am not sure I would. Its better than conch and squid and probably most crab. There is no comercial harvest of it allowed. No tanks are allowed to be used for sport harvest. You can buy farmed Ab's but it is overpriced. Here is more info.

Matt,

Thanks for the great web-sites on abalone, they are extremely informative. Just got done watching a few videos on "Shucking & Cleaning" the tasty little buggers. Looks like they yield a decent amount of meat & I can see there is a technique that must be mastered to become proficient at cleaning them. I'll tell you one thing though....I wont be ordering any of them soon, from those online, farm raised, varieties. Their crazy expensive!!!

P.S. That lingcod is an ugly bugger....but I trust your judgment that it taste good.

Thanks Again,

Bob

I managed to land quite a whopper bergall...look, I'm thrilled.

We did pull in a nice haul of sea bass (delicious) and a fluke. Some very large winter flounder were released b/c the season just recently closed on them.

Pictured is my neice with her first and second ever catches. One is a shark, and the other is a pretty decent sized Mullet.

I don't post on this thread often, but I do read it alot, so I hope you don't mind me posting. She will get a kick out of it.

That is a considerable sized mullet, AWGunS. Though I don't eat them, mullet are a lot of fun to catch on light tackle. Sharks are also strong fighters. Congrats to your niece on her first fishies.

Looks like a happy camper to me:thumbup:

Yes, she was very happy.

When we first arrived at the Pier (Avalon, in Kitty Hawk), I asked how the fishing was, and was told it wasn't very good. So I didn't have much hope for a good night.

But within 10 minutes of being in the water, we had the first fish, and it was pretty steady for the 3 hours we were there.

On the way home, while riding in her mothers car, she asked if she could get a fishing pole so she could fish at camp. Her mother replied that she would get her a beginners rod, and that Uncle could teach you how to fish. My neice replied 'A beginners rod? I have caught seven fish, including a shark. I am not a beginner mom'.

So I am geting her a nice little rod and reel setup for the pond.
