I will be buying 2 of whatever pattern is chosen, one to carry and one to keep mint. A teardrop jack with a spear main blade would be my first choice, easy open or regular, both are good. A peanut would be good also. I really like the look of some of the older peanuts with a spear master blade. A toenail would also be good.

Hi folks -

I have been through the posts so far and here is the vote counts - EO has gained a lot of backing in a short time.

After analysing the statistics...

If the Harness Jack is combined with Easy Opener, then it way ahead.
I understand they do not by definition combine
But the common denominator would be a Teardrop Easy Open Jack, and we can discuss the second blade and if a bail

My preference would be:
1. Punch
2. Blade (pen or Wharnie)
3. Cap lifter

With a bail.

I would be in for any of the above combinations

ATS 34?

I'd love to see a Harness Jack in Ebony and maybe D2! I love the pattern and for me the punch is an even more useful tool than a secondary blade.
European thinking, probably :)
But I have to confess that I don't like the look of EO
Mainly for aesthetic reasons - to my eyes it always seems like a piece of the handle is missing :D

Anyway: Many thanks to Andy, Campbell and Chris for your effort!

Best, Peter

Of these more popular ones I could go with the swayback jack, half-congress, peanut, or a trapper (yes, even if it has a spey blade, but I'd prefer a wharncliffe).

I don't have much interest in the other patterns, and probably won't participate if one of those are chosen (especially if it's an elephant toe or sunfish), but don't let me spoil everybody else's fun.

Re: Easy Opens .....

That may be, but when you can handle one and see how quick you can pinch the blade and snap it open, you'll fall in love. :)

..... and the cutout in the handle makes a great place to put your ring finger or pinkie when using the knife!

I really like the idea of an EZ-open jack with a bail. That would be ideal in my opinion. I'm not sure which manufacturers would be options for this pattern?

The ebony turned out really nice on the 2010 knife and I would love to see another wood used for 2011.

I agree, but I it's significantly more $$$ than most ebony. My guess is we need to pick either spendy steel or handle material. Then again, we might get both depending on the manuf & pattern.

It must be costly. I was told desert ironwood would run me an extra $40 over micarta for a custom I am having built.
It sure is pretty though.

Hi Dave -

This is not an official poll - just the discussion thread - I tallied the wishes expressed in the individual posts.

There will be an official poll, but there are a couple of things that need to be done before we can post the official poll.

We all will have to refine our collective wish-list down to a manageable number of choices, then we can determine if those pattern-choice wishes can be met under the guidelines, (i.e. $100 cost etc) and by which manufacturer(s).

It should be fun and I look forward to seeing what comes out of the process this year!

Andy,
You are a great leader. I am proud to be part of this team.

I don't doubt that, depending on maker.
Some charge more for a different color micarta also. .. :)
I am talking about the real bottom line though.
I'm gonna do some checking around. :)

Sorry -- I didn't mean for my comment to cut the leggs out from the ironwoord argument. I don't think the "real" bottom line would be that much more -- unless we go for burl (and I suggest we don't). My guess is that the proce difference between makers for the same micarta reflects what those particular makers choose to stock in bulk vs. those colors for which they'd have to pay small quant. pricing. Personally, Arizona Desert Ironwood (not a burl) would be my #1 choice...African Blackwood would be #2 (though, it has a look very similar to the ebony on this year's knife).

How would the company that makes the knives need the scale material, if we were to provide it to them. [Much like was done with the last knife when someone donated the stag.]

Would they take billets / bulk pieces or would it have to already be processed down to somewhat usable sizes? Does any know?

Just curious. :)

No apology necessary. We're just talking "if's" and "what if's", you didn't cut the legs from under anything IMO. :)

This is a good question, because I think my dad has a small ironwood stump laying around....

It's quite a tribute to this series of knives seeing how many are participating. I saw this thread start, thought I'd come back to it a few days later & it's already at 10 pages...nice.

Anyways, I could see a Peanut, seeing how popular they are, but personally, I'd love to see a mini-Trapper (3.5" or so). I can live with the Spey blade, but would agree that a Wharncliffe would be nice.

Belated thank you to the team that's working on this one, too.

Oh yes - a Wharncliff Trapper in 3.5 or 3-3/4 in stag would be my second choice right after the Teardrop Harness Jack (with a bail but I'm not yet convinced concerning the EO :o)
