It's a wire attachment at the opposite end of the tang yo which a chain was attached which either attached to a belt loop or s pocket watch meant to keep a knife from gettin' lost.

Thank you very much! :D

I think its poll time gents.I'm just sayin'.

I hear ya.:)

I think we have at least a clear top 3-4 choices, in no paticular order they are:

  • EO Jack
  • Teardrop Harness Jack
  • Sun Fish/Toenail
  • Trapper

These are not necessarily the official top four, just my perceived version.:)

how much did last years run at dollar wise? just for those of us less financial that want to put away for it...I'd hate to miss out this year.

Extending the case for a teardrop, here are a few more pics of what a beautiful knife a teardrop can be!!
These are older Case knives.
The top two have reasonably full blades.

Some of you remember my first attempt at a special factory order.
This Robeson pattern is the one that provided the model!
It looks good as a Harness Jack, but also as a single blade.

Here is an example of the finished product.
Goes back a few years, but it's still the favorite for me.

Last years knife was $87 delivered in the CONUS. The goal is to keep it under $100 so that should give you a general idea of what to shoot for. Part of it depends on the materials that are used.

There have been some great ideas posted here so far. It's too bad we have to choose just one.

Thanks for the kind, poetic words, Anthony!
Here's an option for a second blade, for those with punchophobia!:D JK, JK!:D
Still, a worthy alternative;

(I think this speaks to the pattern guys, so I'm hoping it has its place here)

Waynorth, you just posted my dream knife. That is a thing of beauty.

Thank you,

I like that one, as long as it's pinchable. I also like having bolsters at both ends like the teardrops.

Also, I have punchphobia. At least the front of a bottle opener can be used as a screwdriver or to unlock the doors in my house that my kids keep locking. I'm wondering if we could have some made with a cap lifter and some with a punch?

For pinchable, I think we'd need the teardrop with an Easy Opener notch. And the screwdriver would have to be shorter.
If we had them made in two models, punch and caplifter, you would be surprised how much more it would cost.
For budget considerations, we shouldn't go there, IMO.
We get a break at 100 knives which are identical. Losing the break, plus the extra tooling would put us over $100 I am sure.

Charlie,

Thanks for your input. Us newbie organizers need to lean on you for advice such as this.

I have been in contact with Andy and Campbell behind the scenes and are all a giggles on how well this is going. We are going to be contacting makers soon now that we have some definite pattern favorites. It looks like it will be an EO teardrop harness elephant fishtoe fat spear main blade with swedge cap-screw lifter punch blade secondary. I thought this was going to be hard. :foot::D

Thanks much for those pictures.

I like your eagerness Steve. :D We will be doing a poll soon. Everyone is doing a great job and all info is in the funnel. Andy, myself and Campbell need to do some discovery with any and all potential manufacturers, and see what they are willing and or eager to make for us. We think it may be best to do that prior to a poll. The 2011 knife is morphing right on schedule. I think we may be even just a tad ahead of schedule. However, we will not rest on our laurels. Damn the torpedos! :D

Thanks again for all the great input folks!

Steve,
In project managment, this is the classic time to take a step back.
When you have a very strong section of the group with strongly formed ideas.
The stepping back allows the less formed to express their ideas, and reservations about the strong idea, this way you get buy-in so they will come aboard.

Sometimes the less formed comes up with focused ideas that blows everyone away

Sounds good to me! pretty easy figure to budget for. I'd like to try and get my hands on a 2010 knife as well, I kick myself everytime someone posts a pic of one...have to keep my eye on the trading forums :D

Thanks for the reply.

Hi - I'm a relative newbie to BF, but because of that I might have a good suggestion.

It would be really neat if, right at the top of the "Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades" forum thread list was a sticky that read "2011 Traditional Forum Knife Announcements" that was CLOSED.

You organizer types would go in there and post ...well, announcements!

...announcements like: "we're currently polling for pattern selection for the 2011 knife, please go to the thread Link/URL to vote for your fav" and "Place your orders for the 2011 Trad Forum Knife -- see the thread: Order Your 2011 Trad"

The important thing is that the thread is CLOSED so all us good-hearted, well-intentioned folks don't fill the forest with trees so the news is lost.

I'm betting this would increase orders/sales -- a lot of people cannot devote a whole evening to reading a 16 page thread.

IMHO

Oh one more thing, with the pattern I'd rather two blades then 1 blade and a tool (I carry a multitool so I'd have no use for it).

Case used it rarely; dyed red!
This is a W.R.Case & Sons, Bradford. 6245P - a Harness Jack.
My favorite example of Winterbottom.
RedWinterB.jpg

This Red Winterbottom Bone is just outstanding!

When the 'handle/scales' poll gets posted I respectfully suggest that the organizers include Winerbottom as one of the choices.

We are in good hands and yes it is too early for a poll. Lots of great ideas in this thread. Some just are not going to be possible for various reasons.
This thread give the organizers some ideas, then they need to see what is possible then the poll.

IMHO

Personally I can think of no finer way of spending time than reading the thoughts and ideas of my fellow BF traditional regulars; as they express their choices and preferences for the upcoming 2011 Traditional Forum Knife.
I always love threads like this............:)
