2011 Traditional Forum Knife Thread

Hi - I'm a relative newbie to BF, but because of that I might have a good suggestion.

It would be really neat if, right at the top of the "Traditional Folders and Fixed Blades" forum thread list was a sticky that read "2011 Traditional Forum Knife Announcements" that was CLOSED.

You organizer types would go in there and post ...well, announcements!

...announcements like: "we're currently polling for pattern selection for the 2011 knife, please go to the thread Link/URL to vote for your fav" and "Place your orders for the 2011 Trad Forum Knife -- see the thread: Order Your 2011 Trad"

The important thing is that the thread is CLOSED so all us good-hearted, well-intentioned folks don't fill the forest with trees so the news is lost.

I'm betting this would increase orders/sales -- a lot of people cannot devote a whole evening to reading a 16 page thread.

IMHO

Jim,

There is still lots of time to opine on what pattern you would like to suggest. Nothing is solidified at all. This is 2010, and we are looking at a 2011 knife, so nothing is closed, and we are in no rush for anything right now. Welcome to the forums. We will announce any and all new news. When this thread is closed, then we will move on to the next phase. So, please let us know what you would like for 2011 Traditional knife. Thanks for your input, it is helpful. Feel free to PM me if you have questions.

Personally I can think of no finer way of spending time than reading the thoughts and ideas of my fellow BF traditional regulars; as they express their choices and preferences for the upcoming 2011 Traditional Forum Knife.

I always love threads like this............:)

I'm with Alfaholic here!. Of coarse I'm also not quite right in the head either--but hey, that's a whole nother story in of itself!   ;) :D :D

Thanks to all for your fine opinions & contributions thus far,

Anthony

After digesting what the good Shepherd Jim was saying, is to have a closed sticky reading what is currently playing in regards to the 2011 knife. IOW, See thread (post the linky) for commenting on knife choices..... then..... Here is the poll for the official vote for the pattern.......... Here is the thread where we hash out choices for traditional scale material between camo FRN, G10, titanium or Micarta scale issues (traditional faux pax joke).....:p

I think the Shepsters has a great point! I will consult the powers that be for such a process. I must say that would be my second BF career sticky. The glory of all this is so bright. I am humbled. :o

"This means you like me. You really, really like me!" Sally Fields-circa 1980's.

This organizer type has spoken! :D

I guess I didn't make myself clear enough. I wasn't suggesting that any discussion should be cut short, curtailed or closed.

I too enjoy reading down through the posts -- watching as themes develop, get knocked down; ideas are re-thought and re-jiggered.

What I thought might be helpful would be to have, separate from the usual development, polling and open discussion threads, was a sort of master, "table of contents". You could go there and the last post might say that the Forum has decided that the 2011 Knife will be a rigger with a locking marlin spike and that you should go to THIS thread to join in the discussion about whether or not the bail should be fashioned out of flat strap or wire.

We'd have all the same discussions, same threads as always. It'd just be possible for someone who hadn't been following along on a daily basis to log into the Forum and figure out where things stood at that point in time.

Yup,

I got what you meant, but not at first. ;) I never claimed to be the sharpest crayon in the bright colorful tool shed.

It is a great idea Jim. There were lots of people from the last 2 yrs. who mentioned they missed the knife ordering, and this will make it better, and give all a quick reference as to what stage we are in the process.

I will work on it this weekend. Tiring day, actually had to work at my real job!

As what Sunnyd and Alfhaholic said +1

Please keep this free ranging discussion open up to a vote on the pattern.

When we decide on a pattern you can open a new thread for the knife details such as scales steel, and blade shape, for another free ranging discussion
You can also change the title of this one to 2011 Forum knife- And name the pattern

I love dialogue Neeman, just look at my post count per day!:eek::eek:

We are gonna keep this open, fun, and maybe even organized. However the last item I give no promises. Andy and Campbell will have to help me out there.

I am enjoying the process. This will most likely continue for awhile longer. No hurries here.

Andy tallied up what we had so far, and that is a good thing, and it required a little time I am sure. We will retally as need be, but we have some patterns emerging as dominant, and we will focus around them. Hopefully we can get close to 200 going this year. That would be cool to drive the numbers higher. The more input, the better chances of more knives committed to. It is not too late for someone to come up with a great idea and get another pattern idea out there.

I would love a tear drop jack approx. 3 1/2 to3 3/4 in. Wait for next step. i just want a 2011 Forum Knife this year.

As previously stated, my vote goes for this 100+ year old 'Easy Open Harness Jack knife' pattern. I found this one on the secondary market several days ago to give everyone a rough idea of this unique pattern..

Now remember we can choose any scales, shield, bolster(s) type, main blade style and whatever punch we would like as well.. The aforementioned is just food for thought.

Nice one, Anthony! I'm already on record in favor of an EO, and the more I think about it the more I'm liking a punch as the secondary "blade/tool". I like the awl on the alox SAK's, and these punches on the harness jacks look even more substantial.

If Anthony, (sunnyd) likes it I want it. :)

Thanx T.. :D

Keith, No question about the serious tool these vintage designed punch blades are! They will out perform all the other punches put together!.. Remember, these punches were in use well before the horseless carriages and had to be at the ready in a mans pocket in his HJ slippy when called upon and needed when repairing all manner of bridals, saddle's, and miscellanea in double sewn leather and Raw-Hyde-ry..

I will admit I have found more than a dozen uses for my punch blades over the last several years while I'v had my HJ's on my person.

That pattern is growing on me the more I look at it, I'll cast my vote on that since I haven't specified a pattern. I will still go with wanting dark jigged bone scales and nickel silver bolsters.

Something like this :) these are jigged camel bone but there is interest in winterbottom and I'm down with that if its a dark scale.

I've been drooling over recent pictures of Zulus. Being a spearpoint fan and a wharncliffe nut and seeing that the Zulu is the perfect marriage of the two, I have to ask. Is it possible to get a zulu blade in a teardrop?

Winterbottom Bone!. Si, Si Por Favor!!

After looking through the Folding hunter thread...how about a big Folding Hunter akin to the Yukon pattern posted over there?

Judy, a toenail pattern is an Elephant Toenail, also known as a sunfish. It is a broad, stubby knife that was used for cutting heavy rope. The rope was placed on a wood block and the knife was pounded through it with a mallet. They look like these.

Thanks for the simple explanation and the photos! I have learned something new about knives this day.

I will enter a vote for the large 4blade CATTLEMAN.
And add that I love my new 2010 Swellcenter MUSKRAT, it is very awesome
