2013 BF Traditional draft proposal

Something I've overlooked perhaps, but any ideas on the liners/pins?

Brass or nickel-silver? I hope the latter.

The concensus I gathered from previous threads was for NS liners and pins. We shall see I suppose.

I bet there will be plenty of it for free.

Yes, plenty of volunteers for this feature.

I think the design looks great so far. Someone commented that the sheepsfoot didn't look sleek, or something to that effect, but sheepsfoot blades typically ride high when closed on a slim frame. It looks great in the ready to use position, and that is the more important view! I hope for a little antique look with some texture to the micarta handles. I really appreciate the sample Kawamura knife and think is is a good look to shoot for, right down to the shield. Nickel silver liners would be a nice touch. Great job so far guys.

It's not just me - I'm just the gabby one. This wouldn't be possible without everything that my partner knowtracks is doing, as well, plus the mods, the insight of people involved in previous years' knives, Charlie with his experience dealing with manufacturers, and Spark for the business end of it.

Yes, sheepsfoot blades typically ride high when closed on a slim frame but I think that is exaggerated on Congress Pattern knives because the bolsters fall away from the center of the frame. For my .02¢, the sheepsfoot blade riding proud on the 2013 Froum Knife is "much ado about nothing" as illustrated by the following pictures of one of my Congress Jacks.

Lord love a duck - it would be ashame not to have silver (nickle silver or whatever) pins on a knife with white/ivory/light colored covers. Why would anyone even consider brass pins??????? Edited to add: Brass liners would be acceptable - the knife I've posted has brass liners (silver would be nice) but for my .02¢ the pins should be silver.

The take away for this years knife for me is the 3" blade length restriction - a restriction/requirement that has not (to my knowledge) been a burden for previous years knives. Yes, a couple of those knives it turned out had blades 3" or less but it wasn't a restriction/requirement when shopped. It automaticaly takes away the 3 3/4" and 4" frame choices and quite possibly restricts what manufactures are availabe for this years knife. Maybe it was done for the very, very, very, few who expressed a concern about a legal 3" blade length in their jurisdictions? Yes, a 3 5/8" Congress Jack looks nice - the one I've pictured above is 3 5/8" closed and the blade is exactly 3" long but a 3 3/4" or 4" Congress Jack just knocks your socks off.

ED, GEC 73 Smooth (white) Bone knives do have brass pins, much prefer the nickel ones in this case. Nickel liners can also give a good contrast to carbon springs or blades.

To be honest, I think it will be nice looking.... and functional as it will be easy to grab.

You are absolutely correct on that point Will but they don't look nearly as nice as silver ones would as you indicated after the comma in that sentence. Silver liners would look nice but may push the price up a bit too high.

The descriptions and pics showing various of the selected features are great (especially the choices of off-white Micarta for the covers, sheepsfoot main and pen secondary, plus the wrap-around spring for the secondary blade). Not really very excited about another annual BFC Traditional knife with 1095 blades, but that won't stop me from getting at least one. Thanks to all y'all that are working to make this happen again. This is one of the best opportunities to support BFC and being able to own a unique and meaningful traditional knife.

I often see this mentioned, but not explained.

Do forum knives sell at a profit that is applied directly to the running of Bladeforums? Or does "support" simply indicate "building community morale"?

I'd say it's more building community morale, to use your phrase. The opportunity to support BFC is best realized by upgrading your membership. Lots of benefits to be had also. :)

Thanks! That was my sense, on all fronts, but appreciate the clarifications.

(I consider all my knives my "Bladeforums Knives." Sheesh, what a place. ;))

That what I was trying to say, but you said it much better.

This knife really does sound special! Not having a sheepsfoot, I can absolutely declare myself in. Thanks to all for their hard work!

What Gary said. Spark has said that his intent is not to make a profit, but only to cover his costs.

I don't own any congress patterned knives so I'd be excited to add this one to my collection (better start selling those modern folders so I can afford it on the college budget!). Thanks for all the hard work you guys have done!

specs sound good -- looking forward to hearing back from the makers.
thanks for herding the cats here guys!
