2013 BladeForums Traditional Knife Official KICKOFF!

..............

Queen has a number of traditional designs and uses
420HC
D2
1095
If we choose one of those alloys and a pattern that they don't have to tool up for, they would likely bid on the knife.

.........

Also
Queen in the File & Wire series use a rather excellent ATS34
A very fine stainless

Too bad - we already placed orders with the finest Pakistani cutlers to make the 2013 half melon toepick in genuine roadkill bone. ;)

Mmmmm! Genuine you say? which would make the source of bones as mysterious as the steel.

Neeman-that blue bone is fully sick - thats what we should get (hang on, deja vu from last year).

I've been asking for a Congress Jack for two years. Here's why:

....

And here's what a real one looks like:

That rooster is magnificent, blade etching and all. I'd buy one of those if I could find one. If the forum knife winds up looking like this, I will get one. or two.

A couple more reasons I prefer the CJ to the Half;

1. You get longer blades in the jack varient; a 3.5" Jack can hold a main blade the same length as a 4" CJ. (See picture above.)
2. The blades aren't crinked.
3. They open from the same side.
4. If you use long pulls they can even be on the same side.

I can live with a 4" knife, but the ones I carry the most are 3.5" or shorter. Let's get a nice small pocket knife this year; we'll work on a Whaler or Loom Fixer for 2014.

Good points all. This would be my preference also. I think it's time for a smaller knife and maybe it's time for stainless blades too.

I agree with Eisman. I like the jack configuration with two springs, both blades at one end. For the reasons stated, and just the appearance. That despite I like the equal end jack version for it's slimmer profile.

I am not a fan in the least of the congress pattern, but when I found out that such a pattern as the congress jack existed, I was all over it. It looks like this pattern is the "one", but the sodbuster could still catch up. :D

I would like to see jigged bone scales, no pearl etc. I don't know how common MOP etc was on this pattern, but bone looks just fine to me. 440C, D2, O1, 1095. Those are all fine. I would be happy with Queen, GEC or CSC. Just because I am an uber GEC fan, I would like to see Great Eastern take the contract. They really are a top notch maker, and have really moved far and above the "roids rage" appearance and bear trap springs. They are really maturing into a great company. It looks like Queen has started putting edges on their knives, and I am glad to see that, I think that they're Schatt and Morgan line would be a perfect spot for this knife, but not 420HC or ATS34.

I'm gonna go ahead and repost this picture here in this thread...big fan of this frame, would love to see a forum knife in a single spring variant using this frame

This!

And if not this, then a Congress Jack.

Ditto. GEC positively needs to make a knife like pictured above. Their new 81 frame looks to be a good foundation for it. How long is that Schrade, Charlie?

What is wrong with ats34? It's one of my favorite steels! The only request I have is NO etching on the blade. That is one reason why I have had to turn away some otherwise great knives from GEC.

I have no problem with ATS34, I actually want to pick up one of the new Mountain Mans in ATS34. I just think it would be a hindrance to getting this knife made at a reasonable cost for everyone.

Just a thought after reading some posts on the Congress Jack idea: If it is a congress jack, what about bolsters only on the blade end..... I think that's called a barehead..... Barehead Congress Jack with a long Wharncliffe, pen and in ebony?

This, or similar. CPM 154, all steel frame, sunken joints. Ebony covers.

What he said above!

But it looks like that Congress is going to run off with the laurels. I suppose GEC could adapt their 61 frame for Jack purposes. If not, it's going to be tough to find a manufacturer to do this Congress J......

At least it will be something new&different, myself, the pattern leaves me cold.

Regards, Will

I agree GEC would be my first choice but Queen does better bone jigging IMHO.

I have no idea where this fits, but as it is a point of curiosity (and potentially, "hope") I'll put it here

This is another forum's 2012 knife (the "frosting" is mine):

Some of the specs:
Two clip point blades made with super high quality 14-4 CrMo steel
Genuine American Elk antler handle slabs
"(Forum)" etch on the mark side of the master blade
Custom raised letter (Forum) nickel silver shield
Exclusive (Forum) Edition - 100 pieces made
Packaged in protective drawstring pouch inside a blue box that sports a custom (Forum) label
Limited lifetime warranty

The main reason I present all this that its final price, including all kinds of forum identifiers/customizations, was (is) $75.

If I recall, last year Canal Street wasn't in a position to produce a forum knife for Bladeforums, and I'm not promoting them as a manufacturer for this year's.

I just like how much they were able to offer, especially for that price. Perhaps there was subsidization involved...? If not, I'd be interested in seeing if they'd be willing to work with us again, or how we can accomplish as much in a similar price range with another manufacturer.

And, while I understand there has been "process" in place here in previous years, I've also gleaned that some processes haven't necessarily been the most efficient (or unfraught!) means of accomplishing a forum knife.

Rather than coming up with a pattern No One will make for us (and/or without significant compromises or an untoward cost), might it not be helpful for the A-Team to determine what options might be possible through talking with known manufacturers, and then voting on those...?

Or at least, maybe we can vote on pattern ideas sooner than later here, maybe down to a top three, and see what's actually viable in the Big World?

Quoted because I think it makes a lot of sense! :)

That serpentine knife is 4" long, and pretty close to GECs new #81 pattern. I think it doesn't have enough support here to become the Forum knife, but I suspect GEC will come out with some great variations!
I will buy a congress if it wins, either a Jack, or double end Jack.
People have been asking for a congress for years, so I think it is about time we made one!!
I think it should have completely traditional blades, just like the catalog picture in post number 42!
Rat tail bolsters would be nice!!

Here's a shot from Levine's for those who can't picture a final product:

Thanks for the pic, Eisman.
Speculative specifications:
+Jigged bone please, dark brown, or maybe Yellow Rose?
+1095 or D-2
+Ratail bolsters (drool slobber, slobber)

I know it has zero chance of ever happening, but I would like to see a single blade Lockback.
Someting like the GEC #72.
