There is evidently a diversity of opinions about this lighter ebony (no, really). As you can see, I found it irresistible. :)

Beautiful stuff to me, the dark coloration within the grain, the flashes of gold and yellow (not evident in this photograph; the lighter areas are chatoyant and three-dimensional in person).

What joy, to meet with Charlie again, and to behold [and hold!] the latest outcomes of his insight and expertise.

~~~~~~
I had a wonderful time at the Rendezvous. I'm sorry I couldn't arrive earlier, but am glad to have gotten there at all. I am grateful for GEC's hospitality, and for all who made the trip.
Good people making great knives, drawing good people together.
Thanks, everyone.
Thank YOU Sarah! for your photo's, I thought there would be an overflow of photo's!
That Scout of yours is such a good looking knife!
Those barlagers could just be the perfect knife.
looks like a great event.Thanks for pics
Cheers all.
Hi Sarah! Radio Scout sounds appropriate. Makes me want one even more :(
Definitely sounds better than Beercout or BoysBeer :p
Okay, my last call :D on the subject. You are correct that Beerlow is incorrect, the knife is not a Barlow. Howsoever, neither does it have the Scout shield or Scout Pen Blade secondary. And it does not have the Radio Knife Clip Main Blade or blade etch. But, this one is mine, and I've decided I'm goin with "Beer Scout"! That's even a more appropriate description. Now for the knife content;
Great to read all the enthusiasm and post-event euphoria in this thread. Thanks to those who were able to attend for sharing it with the rest of us. Looks like you all had a great time, and had some great finds. Well done to GEC for putting this on :thumbup:
One day...;)
Just for the record, I had an absolute Great Time at the Rendezvous. Where else can you sit on the front porch and while the hours with the likes of the folks that come to this "event"? I won't go into names, there are just too many to list individually, but there are, Cutlers, knife makers, knife gurus, renowned collectors, newbie collectors, distributors and just a bunch of Nice People! Talk knives, show knives, trade knives and talk more knives. The Rendezvous has grown and been better each year. There just aren't enough superlatives to describe gathering, the people, the knives, so I'll quit trying. Here is some knife content:
I agree 100% with Bob! An immensely enjoyable time was had by all, thanks to GEC!
Bill and his son William put in extraordinary and informative efforts giving guided tours.
Christine and Pattie took good care of all and sundry, in the knife store and elsewhere. The picnic was a feast to be remembered, and the beanbag toss brought the competitive spirit out in everyone!!
All interspersed with showing and telling and talking up interesting knives. Paradise for a knife person!!
Fabulous read people and great pictures. Those Radio Scouts and sucker rod #81's are something else. I for one would love to see them hit production someday but congratulate those who made the trip to get the originals. Maybe next year ;)
I am terrible at taking pictures on-the-spot as it is, especially when it involves other People(!).
This year, I was on notably short time, especially when it came to viewing knives. There was much I missed, that I intended to get to. That said, the time I had was almost entirely filled with friends and their knives, and sharing my knives with others. To have attempted to step back and photograph others engaging, and knives, would have taken extra energy and forethought I didn't possess in the moments leading up to and through.
That works for me! I'm not sure what mine is, honestly, but I like it. :D I also foresee some Sunbrite in my future, someday.... ;)
Spectacular knife, and I agree with all that you've written above.
Yes, I need to have some speaks with Pattie, about some of her Rulez. Heh.
All interspersed with showing and telling and talking up interesting knives. Paradise for a knife person!!
Agreed! It was great fun having opportunity to relax and even Play with the GEC folks, outside of the factory and away from the work at hand.
Special thanks to Mike Latham of Collectorknives.net, who swooped in (if still from afar) and paid for all of us signed-up picnic-ers(!). :thumbup:
Another Thanks Mike! The food was great - money well spent and appreciated!!
You were with us in spirit!
Thanks for the good time GEC and fellow blade forum members, it was nice to put some faces to the comments, till next year!
The Great Eastern Cutlery website has some photos of the rendezvous at the factory.
Perhaps some more photos will be posted over the next few days from the picnic at their site as well.
I was fortunate enough to spend Saturday morning at the rendezvous. I can't say how enjoyable it was to talk with Charlie, Lyle, Dave & Sarah about our love of knives and the cutler's art. I couldn't have imagined a kinder, more generous and knowledgeable group of people. It was an honor to spend time with them and discuss different aspects of collecting and using knives.
William and Bill Howard were consummate hosts, freely giving of their time and infecting us with their own enthusiasm for designing and making their fantastic knives. I felt like a kid in a candy shop, getting to handle so many beautiful knives.
Same here. I was so focused on new friends and knives that I didn't get any pictures, and stopping to shoot would have gotten in the way (I couldn't make the picnic). Well, it gives me a reason to return next year.
^^^ I enjoyed meeting you also, RobbW. Everybody there was so easy to talk too, it was a great time and you know I have to get one of those wood Vipers we saw on tour.
A knockout to behold! I was lucky to get one also, and watched astounded as they disappeared off the shelf!
I witnessed the patina as it progressed, and attest to its authenticity!
Unusual and beautiful - hard to believe it is ebony; it has an amazing range of colors. Yours is great Sarah!
