2018 BF Traditional Knife

Of course, we need to keep in mind that these designs weren’t ours, or GEC’s for that matter to begin with. They are all very old traditional patterns that no-one owns the IP rights to.

There are some exceptions. Like the calf roper.

:eek::oops:

Buck seems to open up a lot of choice - for us to vote on later ;)

Personally, I wouldn't need a shield on these, the BF tangstamp on one blade and a Buck one on the reverse or other blade gives it a differentiation from general run Bucks. Also, some of the 300 series has been discontinued so a Forum Knife based on a discontinued pattern would be unique- (I infer that Buck would be prepared to get patterns out of mothballs but I might be wrong). Choice of scales could be very interesting too: bone, G-10,elk,ram horn, woods etc? I've seen a Custom Buck with really nice off white/cream delrin type, I think @knarfeng, Frank has one? So a lot of possibilities, brass I'd veto for sure:D but Buck might do a 50/50 run of stainless/brass let's see.

Thanks, Will

Some people have mooted a GEC 99. Not bad idea at all as it's a lockback.

If that were an option, I'd suggest the Farm&Field route with this, so it would be Shadow, all steel construction (glimmer of hope it could be stainless-with the old Squirrels etch and Cyclops stamp :D) Many people (myself included) liked the CS Shadow wood knife, so why couldn't GEC try a Shadow lock back in Osage Orange or Zebra Wood? If not that then a fancy micarta basketweave like you see on Fiddleback Forge knives? Beautiful, unique, tough and offers collector interest but on a standard production run of theirs. Nice Christmas present

What would a BF shield look like?
I dunno ... Instead of "BUCK" stamped on it maybe have "BF 2018" in Old English Script?
(Presuming the shield is metal. If a G-10 or Micarta cover is chosen, maybe the shield could be made of G-10 or Micarta in a contrasting color?)

If we get stainless, I'd like to see it be either thin behind the edge or something easy to reprofile like 1095. I reprofile all of my GECs because the factory edges are so obtuse and it's dead easy. Same with the soft stainless on my one Rough Rider, my SAKs, or Buck's 420HC. But Queen's D2 on their stupid thick ground clip blades? I got tired of wearing out my gear and basically gave up. It would have had quarter-inch bevels if I had finished. I had a long bout with BG42 on a Buck 110, which I suspect they left thick because BG42 eats belts. I love that knife now, but during? Not so much.

Having reprofiled 1095, 440C, O1, 154, S30 and S35, M390 - a good extra coarse diamond or silicon carbine Stone makes ready, quick work of reprofile. Wala, thinned edge, and the sharpening pretty much takes the same amount of time on all steels once the burr shows up on your new angle. 154CM and CPM-154 sharpen easier than 440C, thanks a finger edge, and hold it longer.

How about Charcoal Dymondwood that Buck has used in the past? I embellished it a little bit using PHOTOSHOP... not a real picture LoL. :D

Is that a white anvil on the shield under the BF? I could do without that and the etch, but that's a fun representation otherwise! Thanks for posting it.

If we go the Buck route, I would love a stockman in CPM-154. A 303 would be my preference as it would be easier on my pocket as I wear a suit 5 days a week. But I would not be opposed to a 301 if that's majority. I would love to see American Elk sides, but I'm not sure where cost would go to. I think cocobolo or ironwood would also be a nice looking knife. But, jigged bone would again really differentiate this knife from anything else Buck normally does.

A GEC Sowbelly would be an excellent option! But that's a dream for now. I would love to see their take on that pattern. A shadow single blade trapper with a full clip point would be another great choice! Those Lloyd variants make me drool!

I believe a gaudy boade etching or shield is biggest risk to a sell out knife.

Keep markings subtle and clean, its about the knife not the logos.

We absolutely would have something unique. And it would be an honor - Buck has been talking about adding the 300 series to the custom shop for a while, and they have mentioned that it's in the works over in their forum, but nothing yet. We'd be the first. And with a good looking knife with a steel that everyone loves, I don't think it'd be a hard sell at all.

Looks good, though I could go without dagger and etch (on Carbon etches aren't THAT bad(still bad) but on stainless I just despise them). What kept me from buying a buck is that their blades aren't really wide (apex to spine). Do they actually cut well?

I was trying to think of a bad option and can't come up with any. However, because I plan to use it I would throw my hat in that it should have 2 blades. 3 is somehow too many and if it's just one then I prefer it to have a lock.

Not gonna lie, loved the moose pattern that GEC came out with and even let my 2017 forum knife go because I stopped using it after getting a canvas micarta moose.

Having said that, I wouldn't be hurt to see a stainless bullnose come out. Generally more affordable, simple, and I think a lot of people are looking for simple. Upgrade to wood slabs instead of the plastic most saw. Get the pulls back to the tight level they used to be even though the softer tension has been smooth on the ones I've bought.

Nice thing about PHOTOSHOP... ask and you shall receive :D:thumbsup: The anvil is Buck's logo with the BladeForum BF in the middle... no etch, Blade Forums Tang Stamp. I would gladly offer my mad photoshop skills for final knife proposal whether it be Buck, GEC or other... just let me know. Again... NOT A REAL PIC ;) This was a fun way to kill a couple hours at work today. I told my boss that it was my most unproductive day at work in 2 years... he was OK with that. LoL.
