2018 BF Traditional Knife

Just re that burlap micarta, I don't know if others share this view but it can be inconsistent in finish. I didn't like the recent GEC 71 burlap micarta. The reason was the epoxy was applied so thick that it completey buried the fibres and felt like an acrylic handled knife.

Re the Buck steel choices, hate to be a party pooper but aren't we limited to traditional steels - so basically 1095 or 440s? Is this a bladeforums club knife or a traditional folders and fixed blades knife?

Those 301s, particularly the stag covered are very nice. The 301 with white micarta and bg42 has been on my need list a long while and if offered, I will most definitely have my dollars out.
But, as previously mentioned in an unquotable post, if Mr. Campagna has possibly already been in talks with GEC about a forum knife I would love to know how that conversation went. Charlie has been been behind the bulk of my finest, most cherished traditional knives and I will want one of those too.
In conclusion, I think its time again to have an A and AA forum knives.
I can't agree more. While the Buck route seems very viable and quite frankly, awesome, I can't commit to something until I know what Charlie is thinking. We just started this discussion a few days ago, and a lot of folks who may be involved in talks were likely busy with the Oregon show...so maybe we'll get an update fairly soon. At least in the time I've been active here, Charlie has been the driving force behind the stunning BF knives we've had so far, not to mention the iconic SFOs of his own.

I'm very impressed with what Buck has shown us so far, and a traditional in 20cv (or any high end steel) has me drooling, but it seems like we still have time to see what Charlie & GEC has up their sleeves.

I'm pretty sure the forum rules pretty much say stainless is cool - regardless of type. But to be fair, I didn't go look it up again, and have been wrong a few times.

EDIT:
okay, it was quicker to find than I thought:

"We give leeway on materials of construction. So if you have a nice stockman with G10 covers, it's traditional enough for us. After all, plastics have been used on knife handles since the 1800's. Stainless steel has been used in cutlery since the 1920's, so stainless is considered traditional. And even though PM alloys are new developments, that fella in the mid-1960's would never know the difference if he were looking at the knife, so they are OK, too."

I agree that the burlap GEC used wasn't the best.

Bose and Case/Bose have been using the 154s for a while. 154 is kind of a modified version of 440C. Queen used it, All the custom guys use it, so I think it's okay. 20CV is basically M390 and that's allowed in the forum on the Lionsteels. Buck doesn't use 1095 on anything, I don't think, but the rules about the traditional forum leave room for materials and draw the lines around design.

We've had traditional forum knives with D2. I don't think there's any rule on what steel can be considered. At least not one that I'm aware of.

It is kind of cool seeing all the ideas being tossed about, some really have my attention. As others have stated, the main drivers for the past forum knives are sure to be offering up their views as well and it will be interesting to see how everything progresses.

I am impressed with the Buck 301 options and it would be nice to see that pursued even if not chosen as the forum knife. Just a group buy of a very cool knife, what's not to like?

Norcal, nice Buck knife. That style with upgraded steel, and stag grips and I am in!

They do use 5160 carbon which is pretty nice.

Had Buck actually make up some samples of the 301. Like I said, access isn't a problem! ;)

Top is Stag.
Middle is Burlap Micarta.
Bottom is Poplar Burl

Normally I am a wood handle guy first, and then a micarta guy second, and everything else third, but that elk makes me want to say "shut up and take my money!" The idea of that elk with a CPM154 blade sounds about like stockman heaven for me.

Thank you SK for being so responsive. This process has certainly become rather exciting this year.

I've been hesitant to chime in anymore on this thread as I've largely been waiting for the powers that be to lay out the choices for us. Barry alluded to the fact that Charlie has been in some talks and has some ideas so I'd like to see what the option is there.

There has been a lot of disgruntled talk about GEC not being accommodating or responsive and that Buck's responses have been very welcoming. I'll point out what we all already know and that is GEC doesn't have a sub here, Buck does. I think it is safe to assume the reason why we are getting the kind of response from Buck that we aren't perceivably getting from GEC.

That all being said, I am not opposed to taking part in a Buck forum knife. Buck knives consist of some of my very first pocket knives and my first fixed blade when I was a younger man. I'm indifferent when it comes to steel choice but not so when it comes to cover choices.

We had micarta last year and therefore I am a bit eager to try something different this year. Plus it is the furthest thing from being a favorite of mine on a slipjoint, though I do prefer it on a fixed blade. The stag option looks amazing, I would even be on board for elk as well. And please... FFG is a must...

Ultimately, it might be getting to a point where we need to hear from Charlie and GEC and then put it to a poll or vote.

I agree with @sabre cat. It seems appropriate that some other figures of authority who have helped with previous forum knives should to step forward and state plans or the intention to either move forward (or not) with an offering possibly already in the works. We should give some time for that to occur, right?

Yes, what he said...

With SFO knives being over subscribed by 400%, i think 2 forum knives is not a crazy idea.

I also like the idea of showing Buck that a nicely made USA manufactured slip joint is still viable!

I am in for a buck and a gec!

I also would love to hear what GEC had up their sleeve. Due to this, I am hesitant to go full hog for a Buck.

That being said, I would love for a Buck 113 Ranger to be an option. 3 1/8" blade in 20cv or CPM154 sound like a nice edc addition.

I think it was already mentioned, but I think it would be really cool to have a two blade TC Barlow to pair with last years knife. Sort of like a two year “set”. Just spit-ballin' here.

On the topic of the 301, I went lookin for photos of any with a long pull and came across this interesting site.

There is a nice looking Camillus made 301 (about halfway down the page) with a long pull.

This version of the Buck 301 seems reasonably common, and was also made by Schrade. I like it more than the regular blade.

I know the 301, 303, 112, and 110 are listed as being possible. But that being said, I don't like to make an uninformed decision.

If you don't mind me asking, what models would be available?

I Really like the 113 Ranger, and would LOVE one in 20cv, CPM154, or AEB-L.

You would basically have almost any model available to you, though obviously not all models qualify as traditional. So yes, the 113 would be available as well. However, it seems that keeping narrowed to the 301 and 303 is fitting with the majority sentiment. More options = longer debates. :)
