2018 BF Traditional Knife

Maybe vote on one option at a time so there is not an overwhelming number of choices?

My dim memory of the 2015 Canal Street forum knife process is that there were several polls in sequence. As a participant, it was a lot of fun (I don't know if it created headaches behind the scenes for the folks running the show, but I can see how it might have!).

You would basically have almost any model available to you, though obviously not all models qualify as traditional. So yes, the 113 would be available as well. However, it seems that keeping narrowed to the 301 and 303 is fitting with the majority sentiment. More options = longer debates. :)
There has been a lot of talk about a GEC Sowbelly.
Does Buck make a Sowbelly or a Saddlehorn?

Thank you for the reply.

Edit to add a pic of the 113.

Still like this knife (112 pattern) in premium steel with maybe a plain elk handle or possibly w/a spacer, but maybe a lockback folder wouldn't be considered traditional enough since it's only about a 60 year old design.

Wow, 26 pages and I still have no idea what's goin' on, as usual ;) .

Let me say this, until someone steps up, be it a former organizer or a young up and comer, with the money and even at 250 knives that's gonna be a substantial investment. Even if it's short term I don't know many people with that kinda cash around. If it were that easy we wouldn't be discussin' this here, we'd be pickin' from a selection of a dozen different "Official BF Forum Knife" options.

I'll be in for whatever, and thanks to those doing the legwork.

If Buck ends up making the knives, what do y'all think of trying to get them to make us a 310 Whittler. It's a less common configuration, which I believe is being discontinued this year. That might make the forum knife a bit more special.

I'm fine with Buck and I'm fine with a whittler a Buck Whittler on one of those massive 3 spring knife frames would be great and a handful of knife for sure. Quite possibly too heavy for many but not me of course. :D

Hey, all my GEC knives are manufactured overseas!  ;) :D

Seriously Barry, the voice of experience is worth a lot in my book

That made me laugh hard enough the Mrs. asked me what was so funny? I tried to explain it to her but somehow she didn't get it, till I told her where you were located. Still, she didn't think it was as funny as I did and I couldn't even use the "...you had to be there." defense because she was. ;)

No stag or fancy bone for me. I like users.

You can use stag and bone, I do and I have knives from 100 ago that were used and are still used, some even with pearl handles. For some reason there's the notion that knives are and should be made to beat on with hammers and rocks and come through unscathed. I'd be curious to see what the public's expectancy of what a sharp knife is and what they should be able to stand up to based on the upcoming cuttin' competition knife show due out this spring.

What would a BF shield look like?

Whatever it wants to look like! ;):D LOL We have 2 more dots to grind off the BFC's Tang stamps, I'd much rather see those finished out in the next 2 years than make any major changes.

Oh and I vote a gunstock jackknife with carved pearl covers.

Things sure are different from the days when it was 30 guys arguin' over whether the first knife should be Stag or jigged bone, they were etched, endved and serialized, hell we only had something like 30 made. You know how hard it was to get 30 people to agree on any one thing? I can't even fathom dealin' with 500 people and tryin' to make sure everyone was happy. No wonder Kevin only did it for 1 or 2 years before sayin' he was out and unless someone else took over, the forum knife woulda died in 2008.

I wish all the luck in the world to whoever takes this on and as always I offer my assistance in anyway I can. That bein' said I'm in for whatever gets picked, hey it's a knife, it's already got my interest, it's tied to BF, a place I've hung out since the before times and I save pennies, nickles and dimes all year to get a forum knife, what will I do with the money come September ?

Now here's my advice, subscribe to this thread and watch the traditional forum for polls and threads with anything that says 2018 or forum knife attached to it and you'll know what happens, when it happens and how to pay for and get one if they do happen. This is the basic process to ensure you have one to put in your pocket come Xmas if there is one. A forum knife I mean, not Xmas. :D It doesn't hurt to have a few friends lookin' out for you as well as you doin' the same for them.

Oh and I did read all 26, (probably 27 by now)pages. Peace Out

Pardon me if I get a little windy but as I sit next to my ailing mother in the hospital room I read the entire thread and it is quite a read in one sitting at this point. There have been many great ideas, some wishful thinking, some very impressive renditions brought to life and some positive movement towards bringing the next BF knife to fruition. It is great to see the input of the members putting out ideas in a constructive and entertaining way without some of the negativity I have seen sprayed around in some previous threads regarding similar situations. As one of the rookie members of the forum I feel I know I'm not alone in echoing the feelings of a lot of the members, older more established members that though the idea of a Buck forum knife is a very attractive one and one I most definitely would purchase, I feel we need to let those that have been so loyal and diligent to this forum and its members in bringing previous knives the time and opportunity to present their intentions/ideas. As someone who silently sat back and watched last year's knife evolve and then go through the purchasing process I am amazed at how effortless and seamless Charlie and Barry produced last year's knife to the members even though I'm sure there was a lot of headaches behind the scenes. But from my La-Z-Boy everything was easy, peacy. I greatly appreciate their time and effort to not only producing the forum knife but their contribution to this forum as a whole. But if we do go with a Buck forum knife please put me down for a 300 series with CM154 steel and wood scales with the shield and etching omitted. :)

I'm fairly sure Charlie has been thinking about this year's knife and may have even gone as far as discussing a particular pattern with GEC, so let's not get in a big hurry. He will no doubt chime in soon....
Yes that's makes sense thank you Berry :D

Historically, every aspect of the forum knife was decided democratically by the membership here, with a group of volunteers organising things, and several polls on every aspect of the knife. Knives have always been ordered and paid for in advance, which greatly limits the financial risk to any one individual

You're not alone there Ted! :D Always great to have your perspective my friend, and glad to have given you a laugh ;) :D

I'm impressed by the vitality and enthusiasm that the Buck options have generated, lot of very real and possible models and options have been aired. Is this not what a Forum is about? Yes.

Sometimes in the past discussions have bogged down on minutiae or people saying this is not possible, that's not possible we have to ask nicely to companies and see what they might come up with. Yes the process can be complex, but some people are better than others at dealing with the complexities;)

Let's look at steels: 1 stainless Forum Knife, 1 D2 (possibly another) the rest 10 all carbon...

Patterns. Only one Stockman and that a Small one in carbon and Stag. So we have not had a Big Stockman knife and that's ironic as it's one of the iconic Traditional patterns! Forum Knives have often been 2 bladed and some have had a punch, others a bottle opener, there have been some remarkable patterns the 14 and 15 being my favourites.

The Buck attitude appears to be that whatever we choose-within reason-it can and will be done and in a timely manner, that too impresses me. I hope GEC put a proposal forward and very soon, after all they've got plenty of experience to draw on in making Forum knives;) I also think it should be something remarkable and not just a run of what they're doing at that time, preferably in their nice 440c stainless but that's asking too much:rolleyes:

More PHOTOSHOP... I think I will post these pics in the "Your Newest Addition" forum too, just to mess with people :D Don't look too closely at the stag handled one... it looks like someone glued a bunch of stag pieces on the side of a knife but you get the picture. I copy and pasted from a picture of a Buck 503 Elk.

I gotta say... I do not own any micarta handled knives but that burlap micarta looks like a winner ;)

That elk handled Buck is for me. I would like a smaller, maybe circular shield, but otherwise I'll take one.

So, something like this is what you are talking about?

Edit to say: this is not my knife, just one I saw for sale somewhere so I thought I'd post the pics here.

Another winner for sure.

Me too Barry. Maybe with an Eagle instead of the Wolf.

I just want to reiterate because it was kind of late last night that I posted - production and financing and distributiondist taken care of with the Buck route.

@waynorth - is there anything already in the works on GEC's end for a forum knife? What's the verdict on stainless steel from Bill?

I personally have basically zero interest in a Buck for a forum knife. They just don't do anything for me. A 501 or 503 maybe, if that's an option (can't remember). The 301 and 303 actually fill me with anger. I have nothing against Buck - in fact I have a lot of respect for the company - I just don't care much for the knives they offer right now.

Just a thought, is there any reason we'd be limited to just one brand? It sounds like Buck could produce a Bladeforums knife in quantity, perhaps sold via 1SKS like the Kershaw Skyline was, and then a more limited production knife for just the Traditional forums by GEC, Manly, or whomever. From what I gathered while skimming through the numerous pages, there's at least a few different companies that are eager and able to produce something for us.

Sorry Aaron, I had to laugh at that! :D Why? :D

Wasted space. I look at the huge gaps where there could be blade and I'm disgusted. Either crink the blades and make it thinner and lighter, or fill up that space with more blade length. Aside from that, it just seems lazy to me to eschew traditions in favor of ease of production. Also, I really don't like the way the blades are ground, although the FFG option would alleviate at least that issue for me.

Fair enough! :D Thank you for explaining :)

It has not been stated whether it is a flat saber or full flat ground blade.

The 301 does not fill me with anger, LOL Planterz Planterz . But it does leave me flat. It just seems like an annual knife should be more special.

This conversation has made me take a fresh look at Buck knives however, and I am impressed. The knife Barry posted is just stunning, although I have mixed feelings about the wolf and spacer. I have never seen a bare end 112 or one with that shape blade. Where does that one come from gunstockjack gunstockjack ? I want to get one even if it is not chosen.

Likewise, the Cocobolo with D2 is gorgeous. It is retailing for under $70! I would be proud to own that one as well.

Attention GEC, the train is leaving the station! I am still very anxious to hear what they can offer. @waynorth
