2021 BF Forum knife vs. Facebook & Flippers

Hopefully it’s not the same guy that runs up auctions and never pays. That is one of the reasons why people think they can get $500+ for a GEC. People look at sold auction prices and think that’s the current value of the knife. Not realizing no one actually paid that price.
The thing is, someone else bid just under that winning bid. No matter what you put in as the bid, it only advances one step above the last bid.

I imagine someone in dungarees, sitting on a rocking chair, supping JD and whittling.
You’re right, and here that refers to the traditional knife forum: slip joint knives and the like which illicit images of our grandpas.

I don't see how being on facebook makes you more likely to be a bad un.
Blade Forums is a club that’s free to join and participating is easy. The forum knife is something special that our well-connected members make happen for the participants. Discussions outside of Blade Forums regarding the Forum Knife kind of betrays the point- come to Blade Forums and talk about it here! That aside, there’s conversations which attempt to circumvent the good intentions of the forum knife altogether which are completely inappropriate and show a lack of respect to this community and the people who work hard to keep this place going.

Belong to Facebook groups, or not, but keep Blade Forums business in Blade Forums.

I get that, but who’s to say they were going to pay either. I think people get into bidding wars and forget at the end of it they have to pay. Im just saying it only hurts us in the end. If someone posts a forum knife for $1,000 and some one “buys” it and doesn’t pay. The next guy that lists one is going to think he can get $1,000 for his too.

I see what you're saying now.

They keep trying to make improvements to the random human response generation program, but as you can tell... it's still a little janky.

On an unrelated note- months ago this guy sent me a PM telling me I was the big reason he didn't want a forum knife this year, detailing my benign transgressions.
He said, "You, right now, are a big part of why I'm so disillusioned with the place. You are also big part of the reason I've decided not to buy this year's knife."
As of a number of weeks ago, I noticed he wanted one again... and here I was thinking I was kind of a big deal...

I sincerely hope that knife he wanted found it's way to someone else.
The real shame is that I didn't get such a PM. 🤣
🤣 🤣

Its not just GEC,olights, watches anything and everything people are looking to make money from.

Personally I have never bought anything to sell at a profit or to sell full stop.

I don't see how being on facebook makes you more likely to be a bad un.
It's not about being specifically from Facebook. It's about the fact that a large group of collectors from elsewhere (they were here from IG as well, incidentally) came here to Bladeforums specifically to get a knife that they know will have a high collectibility, and an even higher resale value, that's all. They weren't here to become a part of the community, they wanted to get in, type in "Hey bro, nice knife!" 50 times, order, get their knife, and leave. But not to worry, we'll see them again next year if for some insane reason, GEC somehow offers to make another Forum knife for us again.

I don't see in any context imaginable how this run would affect GEC in any other light than a positive. It's a highly desirable and exclusive piece, and will be sought after long after the flippers have their day in the sun. And GEC has shown zero interest in participating in this forum in any way, shape, or form. They make and sell knives, period.

As to how things played out, it appears there was a glitch in the matrix where the folks using Paypal, there was not a way to properly enter their BF usernames where it was recorded. So maybe some slipped in and got a knife that they were not "entitled" to. Me, I say meh, so what? It's just a knife. I will be ecstatic when mine arrives. I feel sorry for any long time members that missed out. There once was a man...

Not too sure what being good for GEC has to do with it. This isn't about them, it wasn't on them to vet these snakes from elsewhere, it was on us. Honestly, this post is 100% "I got mine, so I don't care". Since it's "Meh, just a knife", why not offer yours to one of the longtime supporting, contributing members of the Porch who didn't get one because some dbag with 3 or 9 posts in Traditionals came in and got it instead? I mean, since it's "Meh" and all. This attitude is why flippers and non-BF-contributing outsiders come here and do what they did. And it wasn't "some", there were at least twenty or more people I counted who should not have gotten a knife, and you can be sure it was a lot more than that who actually did, because many of them are smart and didn't post in any of the threads. They just took the code, placed the order, got theirs, and now they're back on the FB and IG pages showing their knives off. This situation was handled the worst I've ever seen it, and I've been here for a minute.

But it's ok, some of us still care, and rest assured, I'll be right here next year, still calling people out who try to grab a knife not meant for them. The good news is that if it happens at all, it's going to be very difficult for these bums to creep in from elsewhere. I'm going to help make sure of that. :)

I think quiet may have over simplified. It may or may not be that GEC wants this type of attention. I don't know. You are correct that the piece is highly sought after.

The real question is if the powers that be here want their name associated with such a thing, Besides this year being run like a drunk monkey shooting flying fish out of the sky, having your name on this knife only highlights the problems flippers and non-community members. The negative attention gives BF in general and the porch specifically a bad look. This years knife is kind of like blood diamonds.

And there was no "glitch" in the ordering process. The whole thing was fracked, completely and totally. The dealer isn't even a paying dealer. He's been known to flip GECs himself. We wanted no part or help in vetting. Utter shit show to say the least.

At best, you won't see another BF knife like this, at worst you won't see another BF knife at all. In my mind the blame can be laid clearly on the feet of one party.

You may have missed it, but I already did offer to gift my knife to another member. When the dust settles, that may very be the destiny of my acquisition this year.

I did indeed miss it, and so if that member takes you up on it, good for them, and good on you for moving the knife to someone who understands the meaning behind it other than "Just another collectible GEC knife". Good deal.

That is how I feel about it myself. And as to how things went sideways, the show isn't over, there's still the international and Canadian knives, and the rest of the domestic shipment still hanging...

My Bladeforums forum knife has been " on its way to a USPS facility"

Since 9/28/21...

Hopefully it makes it!!
That's because those of us who ordered in a timely fashion when the code dropped were penalized because taking a stack of printed paper/stickers and TURNING! IT! OVER! is apparently super hard, and the guy who did it just didn't have time to really do any of that. Super busy and all, you know how it goes. So, all of the people who ordered last (like most of the padded postcount FB gang) ended up getting their knives first. This abject laziness is a thing that the dealer handling the sales openly admitted to in the thread, incidentally.

GEC shipped 250 out, before they closed down for a week for their annual vacation this week. There is a bunch of us still waiting.

The dealer didn't get paid for this. He was the dealer we used because no one else volunteered. Paying dealer or not, no one else wanted to take on the work.

Penalized? That's too much. Some people always get their knives before others. Par for the course when hundreds of packages need to be shipped out. Nothing punitive about it.

I had a lot more typed out, but instead I'll just say this. I'm going to wait until I get my knife, and then I'm opening a thread in Tech Support where I'm going to lay out the entire situation for everyone, so that folks who don't realize how clownballs this entire process was can be clued in. That dealer hopefully won't ever be allowed near this process ever again.

Incidentally, yet another snake just posted up pics today of his new BF Knife...that he didn't have the post count at the time to have bought.

Methinks next year's forum knife, if there is one, needs a volunteer background checker/vetter.

I also think you need to change your forum handle, Quiet. You're anything but. 🤣
