2021 GEC #68 White Owl

Here are some more pics of my Stag.

What I find interesting and a bit of a departure, they appear to have ground flat and polished the faces of these covers. It makes for nice thin slabs but it does make one wonder how the Stag might have looked had they left it intact.

You are right, Dylan. It looks like it was thinned out on the surface, rather than the underside as would be usual!

I will say that this is about my ideal thickness for stag covers - for the longest time I avoided stag because I do not care for very thick covers. Mine will be here Monday, fingers crossed I get something similar!

Also, I have an information request from the peanut gallery. My 33 has been in my pocket almost everyday since I picked it up when they came out, and I love the dark jigging and stout pull and so on.
I like the white owl for similar reasons, it has a decent combo of blades (I’d love a clip and coping, if anybody is listening 😁) and carries well. The only problem is that I cannot get over how light the covers on my example are! I’ll post pictures in the morning, but the dye job is quite a light tan in the center that tapers out to white on the ends.

Is there any way to darken the scales while still keeping some of the original character?

See posts 49, 53, and 54 in this thread. Charlie darkened one of his, and he explains how he did it. And there’s before and after pics.

Dang, Viper, that sucks! I would be pretty disappointed in that. Those "character marks" on the pile side are bad.

Not the greatest look for GEC, as in prior years this would have been a "2"or S for sure.

Latest iteration of my White Ow!! The sanding down of the minimal surface features left me with unattractive coloring, especially on the pile side. Not confident that bleaching them would come out even and white, I decided to PP (potassium permanganate) them!!

Uneven, but interesting color and texture, I'll stop for now and use the knife, and see how it ages!!

That looks really cool Charlie. It looks like an antique. I have a stag on the way, should be here Monday. I bought it from a member here Jon0385 Jon0385 and it’s very dark already. I think it will age well. If it doesn’t I might do some tinkering with it also. 😊👍

Thanks!! Glad you like it!! I think of the color as 'tobacco'! Now it just needs some use/patina!! I have a craving for an Apple!! Gotta keep that doctor at bay!! ;)

Reporting in with another misfit comically bad stag white owl. 🤣 One day I'll maybe hit the stag lottery. I think my chances were much worse for this release.

I actually think your knife looks quite nice. I can see how you would be disapointed in it as an example of stag, but the pile side especially reminds me quite a bit of mammoth, particularly with the dark lines running through the whiter bevels to the bolsters.
