940-1's are shipping now..................

My bevel angles were uneven too, and while it was sharp it was not that sharp, so an hour or so on my Wicked Edge and I have the knife I wanted. It used to be when I bought a new knife I delayed sharpening it as long as possible to preserve the factory edge. These days the factory edges are nothing to get excited about so I almost always re profile and sharpen a new knife. A few makers still put a great edge on at the factory but in my recent experience, BM is not one of them. Still like the knives, though.

Awww. I've been going back and forth on "should I?" or "shouldn't I?" for the past maybe two weeks. Last night I tipped to the buy side of the equation. My justification is that I have a 940 s30v and have found that blade geometry is my favorite for wood whittling. Problem is the s30v will roll slightly even though I'm pretty gentle in my use knowing I could chip a nick out of it if I force the blade too much. I have a Manix2 XL s90v which that steel lasts and lasts even with tough tasks but I can't navigate it well for my whittling. Doing the math...I was compelled to buy the 940-1 with that great s90v steel. I hope I get a "keeper" after reading all of the posts with more that a few complaints in the CQ arena.

I suggest buying it from a local retail outlet because you can then handle and purchase one that has no issues. That's what I should've done!

I received mine just now! The CF is very nice.

Unfortunately, the blade is completely to one side and it will not be corrected using the usual method. The blade is not sharp and the grind uneven and thinner on one side. Sending it to Benchmade. VERY DISAPPOINTED! It's a shame that a $264 knife is like this and the problem isn't fixed before leaving the factory!!

UPDATE: Shipped it to Benchmade Warranty on 4/26/2014 (USPS Priority Mail + Insurance) with a note that it's brand new and that the blade needs to be centered, the grind is off, sharpen it and check for centering and blade play afterwards. Last time I sent a knife to Benchmade was a couple of years ago and I got it back in about 10 days all fixed. Hoping for a fast turnaround with all the proper fixes!

UPDATE: I had shipped my faulty 940-1 to Benchmade on Saturday. They received it on Monday morning. Yesterday (Tuesday) I contacted them via the web form regarding when I should expect my brand new 940-1 back. Today (Wednesday), just now, I received a FedEx notice that a package is coming to me from Benchmade. FAST turnaround! It could be another brand new 940-1 but as long as the blade is centered without play and reasonably sharp I'll be content. I'll advise when received hopefully on Friday.

I just received my repaired 940-1 (same knife: 177 of 750). The blade is pretty much centered and slightly favoring clip side. They did sharpen it and it's much better. No blade play. Grind is as it was, that is, uneven. VERY FAST TURNAROUND (from the time I shipped it to them to received back only 6 days)!

Currently, I'm as content as I can be. It's a very classy, light and powerful EDC.

Well I received mine today. I bought this and a PM2 this week in hopes that they would fill the void that was created when I lost my Kulgera somewhere. I was able to get one without the production labeling on it. The blade is centered and lockup is good. Axis is a tad stiff on the takedown and the blade could be sharper.

I have to admit that I'm more impressed with the PM2 than the 904-1 especially for the money. I love the look of the 904-1 but it's not quite doing it for me. It's smaller than my Kulgera was. I knew the blade length would be shorter but it's smaller in my hand as well. I really like the blade of the PM2 and they way it feels in my hand. I think I'm going to end up putting the 904-1 up for sale.

I see we're in the same neck of the woods. If you have a place you recommend please sent me a PM with a name. I'd like to check it out. I've really only had 2 knives that I've had to return due to gross QC oversight.

Try REI, Sports Chalet and LAX Firing Range. There's also Grommet's Cutlery in faraway Moreno Valley. Great knife shop.

I'm the opposite of you. I'll take a 940 over a PM2 any day and I have some uber nice PM2s. The reasons are overall thinness and most importantly narrowness. That translates to less pocket space and the narrow girth in hand absolutely doesn't bother me. The 940-1 amps the volume with less weight, great gorgeous grippy (GGG) CF scales and killer blade steel. Down the road, if my 940-1 carries well, I'm getting a second from a retail establishment.

The 940-1 is an awesome knife and is so light if almost feels like a toy knife. The one I have has superb fit and finish along with smooth action.Lockup is perfect and zero blade play along with a dead center blade. This is my personal gold class BM (almost cost as much)and it has kicked my Spyderco Native 5 out of my pocket. The Blue standoffs are a touch of class. This Blue class model is better in my opinion than any LE BM models that I own.The Forum Rift is a close second. This model will be a great carry for summer when wearing shorts or sweatpants.I am a big knife guy, so this model is as close as I will probably get to a gentleman's folder.A red flag is waving when I see $199 price tags from brick and mortar purchases.I ponder if there really is MAP enforcement by Benchmade, or some other kind of collaboration is actually transpiring?Obviously not all retailers are not on the same page or on a level playing field. What is real purpose of the price increases and or MAP enforcement? I am still scratching my head...................

The 940-1 folder is an amazing EDC folder! Period! Warts included (and fixed)! More, later...

MAP stands for Minimum Advertised Pricing. It is designed to give a more level playing (selling) field to all retailers. Advertised price would include the price they list on websites, sales flyers, etc. Would likely include prices in display counters also. It does not affect face to face sales including phone sales. No company can control what a retailer can actually charge - they can only control what price they advertise.

940-1 has a retail price of $310.00. It has a MAP of $263.50. What you actually pay depends of the negotiation in a face to face or phone transaction.

Sadly this seems like another BM as of recent with QC issues that a person better inspect before buying. Maybe that is part of their new effort to get people into local dealers!

It brings up an interesting point though, I wonder how many internet retailers would negotiate on those MAP prices if called/emailed. It has to really chap the internet dealers when they see guys buying them from local stores with $199.95 stickers on them. I'd be all over one for that price, but not $270, I doubt any of the local dealers around here are selling at anything but MSRP, much less MAP or well under in some of these posts.

Ramzar,

I'm actually in your neck of the woods right now and would love to check out Grommet's but I doubt I'll get the girl to leave Disney to go to a knife store.

Grommet's Cutlery is about 50 miles from Disneyland! There's a real nice knife store less than 10 miles from Disneyland: Plaza Cutlery at South Coast Plaza (one of the best shopping centers in all of SoCal) in Costa Mesa.

For those that have a 940-1 in hand, do the screws that holds the liner to the scales extend abnormally far past the liner?

The regular 940 has screws short enough to be flush with the liner. On my 940-1, it seems like BM is using the same screw-lenghts for the liner and standoffs. Just wondering if this is a new standard.

I confirm that the screws holding the liners do clearly stick out on the inside of the 940-1 but not on the regular 940.

Thanks RamZar. And I can confirm that the standard 940 liner screws are too short to use reliably in the 940-1.

I saw one in my local gunshop for $202+ tax. It was tempting considering it's ~$263 everywhere else, but the blade centering is off and there was a lot of play. If it was a mini-grip, then I'll be more ok with it, but this is just unacceptable that BM QC has gone to this level...

I just picked one up on evil-bay for $220.00 I feel it's a fair price looking forward to trying it out.

Just received my 940-1 an hour ago USPS. Noticeably lighter than my 940 s30v, almost too light. Good blade centering but a bit of side-to-side movement. I am hoping that during the break-in I will be able to tighten the pivot enough to effectively eliminate the blade play. No vertical slop. Blade was sharp out of box but not as sharp as I think it should have been, but still respectable. The blade grind symmetry is first-rate. The stone washed blade really compliments the CF handle. The clip was loose to the CF scale by about 1/32". I will bend it slightly to secure it to my pocket.
It's a mystery why Benchmade allowed the CF scale screws to visibly penetrate through the liners. Could it have been a production oversight/mistake with an attitude of "oh well, they'll sell anyway?" Beyond my comprehension.
I really like this knife as I also do the 940. I will be using this beauty for a long time. Btw, this knife did not have the production number inscribed on the blade.
