A 2016 Forum Knife. An apology, and The Crossroads!

I missed the 2015 knife, which makes me sad but Im always ready to support a forum knife!

Are we set on the punch being at the opposite end from the main blade? I really like the look of them together. I does putting the at opposite ends allow for this to be single spring?

Here's a similar knife that GEC built on the 53 frame. Not many were made, but it is a fine knife and quite slim, albeit a little large for most.

Notice the 'catch bit' in the second photo that spaces the secondary blade. Last year's forum knife had double catch bits (so the blades could be ground from thinner stock).
Love the clip on that 53...

That's a very classic look with the lined bolsters. Looks similar to the Robeson/Terrier except for the shield.

I have spent a few hours looking for an EE Carpenter's Jack in all the old catalogs I could find - to no avail.

To make an interesting knife, I have a proposal to make to you all, my forum friends!!

I was going to make a Harness Jack on the EE pattern one way or the other.
Since I made one when Bill was at Queen, I was always interested in a double end Jack format as another option. Let's make one as the Forum Knife.
We could call it my 9th HJ. I would forgo any profit of course! This would be your knife, influenced somewhat by me, that guy who usually makes HJs as SFOs.
Benefits:
A nice pocketable package - a single-spring knife. A knife that could be called an abbreviated Scout, because it has a utility blade good for punching holes, whittling, or striking a spark! A nice "pocket" (full-sized) blade would also cover a lot of bases, and there are precedents in old catalogs, showing it to be a traditional pattern.
As a committee we could pick the main blade, handles and shield.
What say you???

Been away from this thread a couple of days... finally caught up.

I'm in too, Charlie... Laissez les bon temps roulez!

Tip bolsters on a harness jack??

Tip bolsters look great on a penknife, and are only suitable for a penknife I think

I never have need of a punch, but it seems many like it. I was hoping for something else.

I empathise, knives with punches are always available for those who have need of one, with regular HJ runs for those collecting the pattern

Campbellclanman- there is a very similar item, on fleabay, with no bail but what look to be wood handles. sorry mods, if i have offended thee. he seemed to miss the knife greatly.:)
thanks, Neal
Doesn't offend me in the least. It does break the rules though ...
Stuff like this belongs in Visitor Messages or Private Messages. Thanks.

I'm liking the direction this is going. Would be a unique knife in my collection.

I do think a bail would be cool!

There seems to be a lot of interest in the forum knife, which is fine, but how many forum knives were sold last year? How does that compare to the SFO knife offerings during the year by most dealers?

I believe last year was capped around 300 knives but I do believe a few more than that had been made and sold. The number has been climbing each year...and as far as the other SFO's...well that all depends as the people commissioning them have the say in how many get produced so the number is different with each run.

Personally I'd like to see the number made capped at a reasonable point. When the size of the run is set it does two things; first, it increases the speed with which they are sold, and second, it helps to build value once they are delivered.
I'd rather see 100 knives at a $150 price than 500 at a $75 dollar price, because I'd rather put my money where it will retain the most value. SFO's are a perfect example of this; shorter runs of desirable patterns create a market and allow both the person who commissioned them and those who seek them out to command top pricing.

These are done at no profit and I don't think anyone's intention is to make them knives that are going to be valuable to flip later on. Kind of misses the entire point of the forum knife, especially if half the people wanting them can't even get them.

Tip bolsters on a harness jack?? One twist of the punch would loosen up the pins.

You are probably right. Personally speaking, I guess I just got caught up thinking about how nice it would be for GEC to start offering tip bolsters.

I do hope that one day they offer a nice sleek single spring EE with tip bolsters, though.
cough(along with a coffin jack)cough

Agreed. There are many other opportunities out there for those who want to buy, collect, and sell for financial investment. (not that there's anything wrong with that) but this is our forum knife.
