A day in the life of Burger Knives (the making of the EXK1).

Marthinus, great photos and info on this very cool knife. Now I have a stupid question for you. Do you know if they will make these with a pocket clip? This is the only reason I have not ordered one already. I am not a fan of belt folder sheaths and a pocket sheath is just not my thing either. I would be greatful if you or others know if this is possible. Thanks

Yes they are. Here is the LEXK with pocket clip. Also Titanium.

Thank you for the info a pic of the pocket clip. Now I must order one without the wife finding out.....

My pleasure red1965. To get it past your wife I would suggest buing her one! In Red G-10!

I have used the knife for dressing dear and around water, only maintenance I have done is just wash it with dishwashing liquid and a sponge and then apply some machine oil, or lansky hone oil, what ever I have with me.

There was one time sand got lodged badly into the liner area, I just loosened the back screws and took a business card and went in between the liner and the g10 scale. Got rid of the sand and was perfect again, I have not had anything gotten into the pivot. Here is a picture of the smallest needle I have in the Little navy sewing kit to show how close the tolerance are:

How'd you loosen the pivot? Did you need a special tool? I'm buying one and my only concern is about the pivot. Incredible review BTW thank you.

Hey Marthinus, I didn't realise there were other South African's on this forum. I read it pretty much every day but don't post often. I grew up in Durbs and moved to Joburg in 1994 after finishing school at Northwood.

I must say, after reading this thread, I am probably going to give Trevor a ring tomorrow to get the local pricing on that EXK1, it looks awesome.

Hi SteelSnob.

I think I should have been a bit more precise in my description. The sand went between the liner lock part that moves over as the lock more towards the back of the handle rather then the pivot area. I have yet to experience any problem with the pivot area. That is with almost two years of edc and included dressing deer, cutting fish and using my knife on the beach. Of course when you drop it in the sand I have experienced that scraping of sand when trying to open then, I just rinsed the blade applied some oil and the sand worked itself out within a day or two.

Trevor uses locktite in the pivot to ensure the knife is perfect. Only recently found that out, but I am sure it can be loosened with some heat just like on the Striders.

I think the tool used for the pivot is this one

This is in South Africa, but I am sure that there are similar tools in the USA. I do not see any other tool of that sort and know KMT is a BIG supplier in SA to knife makers.

I am glad you like the thread so much!

Hi mike_b!

Welcome to the forum! It is a great place and there are a few of us on here! You will see the regulars pop up their heads in many threads!

Great to hear you like the knife! I like to support our local guys. They do great work and some are well known, more over seas then in our own country which is a bit sad.

Give Trevor a call and talk to him. He is very pleasant and great to deal in. (Give a mention that you saw this review for me please! :foot: :p) :D

Thanks for such a great read. I've wanted this knife for so long, thanks in part to your posts on it. I think the Burgers should offer you a complimentary knife as a token of their appreciation, because I'll bet you are responsible in part for many of the their foreign sales recently.

Today I bought the Boker Plus version of the EXK1 at he Boker Factory Shop - they had just arrived, were not even on display yet. Really lovely. I hesitated between this one and the smaller, gentlemeny EXK2 but in the end I bought the more polyvalent bigger one.
Both could well be the most elegant knives in the Boker Plus brand. And the fit&finish is superb.

Well, I am instantly in love with the 2.5" blade. This knife has great lines! Definitely going to add it to my wish list.

Ya excellent thread I love seeing the inner workings of where knives are made. I too just added this knife to my list.

Welcome to BF.....:)
There are a few of us on the forum. I am ex Durbs as well.....
The Stormers supporters still get pissed when I cheer for the Sharks:D

I have a great collection of Fred's Fairbairn Sykes knives. My first visit to Fred and Mike was about 20 years ago. He has really grown the knife production since then.....

Thanks Alfaholic. Once a Sharks supporter always a Sharks supporter. Except when they lose against the Cheetas in the semi:mad:

I just spoke to Trevor - he says he's been on the phone all day with enquiries;) I think he definately owes Marthinus a fee knife.

My EXK1 arrives Wednesday - I feel like a kid on Christmas eve....

Damn mike_b you work fast and waste no time! Congratulations! Please post your opinions etc of the knife. Would love to hear them!:thumbup::thumbup:

Ordered mine today. I almost went with double liners but decided I like the lighter weight. I decided on regulars exk1 with pocket clip.
