Am I weird for cutting my steak and chicken with a folder?

I don't think it's weird to prefer meats cut, instead of ripped. A razor sharp gec 73 (trapper) does a fine job.

I thought they had good steak in texas? If you need a razor sharp folder to cut your meat do you file your teeth so you can chew it? :D

While I don't normally use a pocket knife, I sometimes resort to one, usually an Opinel #10 Slim in Olive wood, great food knife, slim and very sharp without being threatening at the table as well ;)

while the smaller one I had trimmed down from the full length blade into a nice short wharncliffish blade, makes great for peeling apples and the like.

I'm starting to lean toward a serrated Holdout I. Kiddding, I'm kidding.

Boxer .45 and all,
Steak, no!

Chicken? Who cuts chicken?

Well I do . . . well at least to night I did after reading your post. I needed to cut up this cooked chicken breast to warm it up to put in a burrito so naturally I whipped out my “I’m at home so F the man I’ll carry what I like . . .my At-HomeEDC" . . . the Cold Steel Holdout I. A monster that disapears in my pocket . . . how do they do that ? ? ?

Then I thought about this thread and added my dedicated “steak knife” the Lucky just to see how it would do. I assumed the blade would be a bit too short for such thick cuts of meat.

Turns out the breasts were still a little frozen here and there and the Lucky was just a touch more effective.

I suppose they're about the same everywhere, I've had good and bad. But like one of the listed articles says, serrated blades (especially dull ones)rip the meat. This results in excess loss of juice to the plate, = less flavor to your mouth. Once in the mouth, it's home free and doesn't matter, even if you have to gum it. :)
So, just because you can easily cut (mash) a steak with a fork, doesn't mean you should.

Oh the insanity...STOP the insanity. Lololol

Who would have guessed that cutting your food >GASP< would be such a controversial topic on a knife forum of all places? Enough to fill nine pages?

That's like arguing that shooting your own food with your rifle isn't necessary since you can just buy meat at the store. Or just because you have a truck with 4 whell drive or a sports car you shouldn't go mudding or hit the track.

There is a HUGE difference in using ones knife at home etc in their own kitchen doing what they want etc and being out in public around people.

That is the main difference, and it can really be a problem depending on the area and or people around.

It's not a simple subject at all really due to current society and issues that can and do come up.

People have to be very aware of their surroundings as nobody really wants to have to explain why they pulled out a weapon in a restaurant in public to the Police. That is when things can and do get complicated depending on it circumstances and surroundings. That and trying to explain to the judge why they pulled out a weapon when the supplied silverware was on the table, believe me one doesn't want to have that conversation.

Then add in idiot mode of some who seem to believe that everyone should see their new toy so they make sure everyone sees it by flashing it around and flicking it open..... Yes it does happen and usually with very negative results for the idiot.

So some people need to get a grip on their maturity and start using their brains as not everything is black or white these days.

Experiences will be different depending as I said above, but it is possible that the people around, the Police and the Judge will see the knife as a weapon. If that happens the person is totally screwed and can face jail time.

I rarely pull out my knife in a restaurant to cut something. Usually the knife given is adequate to the task. I have pulled out my knife during lunch at work. Sometimes those plastic knives just aren't good enough.

These were my thoughts as well.

So far we have those who care less of the issue,
Those that cringe to the idea of getting food on their knives,
Those that deem it inappropriate due to the "weapon" aspect and
Now those who are "idiots" that flick their knives in public.

Good grief, this topic is soley based on opinion and there is no right or wrong answer that will come of it being dicussed here. I ripped out my Manix 2 to cut into cheesburger yesterday just because of this thread. I wanted to to take a pic but didn't care enough to do that. Taking a pic of a knife that just cut into a cheesburger may make someone think I need to be in a looney hospital!! Who takes pictures of food and knives in public!! That's just crazy!!:D

Ankerson, I respect your knowledge on edge retention and steel but Im going to pass on your opinion here as it is just that, an opinion.

News break:

Cop arrest man for cutting cheesburger with "weapon."

I don't have Ti chop sticks but use chop sticks if they are there on the table.
I do carry Ti spoon and fork. Pretty much I just use the spoon to eat my brown bag lunch (unless there is a chocolate cake to be dispatched then I busssout the Ti fork.

Something about plastic "silverware". I'd rather skip lunch than use that flimsy stuff. It gets ugly . . . there is plastic shrapnel flying, the other diners are ducking and bolting. Better to not go there for me. Besides the Ti can take the extreme heating effect from friction better.

I know for a fact there are people that are in jail right now for doing exactly what the topic of the thread is. ;)

And countless more who have been fined and or have arrest records due to the same.

It can and does happen.

Might want to talk to the Knife Rights people if you don't believe me.... ;)

Don't forget the ones that don't want the toxic waste that is on their knives to transfer and begin to irradiate their food. I must admit to being in this camp myself.

Knowledge of knife laws I suppose. It just seems ludicrous here in the south.

Mineral Oil - Frog Lube - There are several other nontoxic cleaning agents. Im not saying take your rough work knife out and have it do all, but if your knife is clean of toxic, and the cheesburger could be better eaten in two halves, why not.

But that is my main point

Opinions are easy to give.

Not really, anything legal can be considered illegal depending on the situation.

The answer is it depends.

Since we are being analytical, can you see an issue in the situation we are discussing here? A young man, minding his own business at a low to mid level steak place, has created a "situation" of were a legal carry is suddenly deemed illegal? A situation were cops would need to detain him for creating looks?

A knife is not a weapon, it's a tool. Now atool can be used as a weapon. Ever hear of someone being killed with a hammer?

If as "knife people" we keep preaching the same hate sleach as the antis then soon enough we will have to leave our knives in a drawer at our home, or worse. I don't perpetuate or accept that a tool is a weapon unless its in the intention of the user and that is what makes someone a criminal except in the case of self defense.

I won't bow down to someone's sensitivities. If they are sensitive maybe they are the ones that should stay home. I don't wave my blade around in a threatening manner or yell out every time I use it, but I will continue to open my knife and cut things when they need cutting.

If a knife is so threatening at a restaurant then please feel free to explain the difference between the one and my pocket and the one the restaurant provides and how its any less dangerous besides the rounded tip on some like a pair of kindergarten scissors.

Societal norms are only norms because people continue to bow down to the sensativies of very few. This has only been true in recent history because used to people were looked upon as a bad person by their actions not the tools they carried.

Besides you never know when a federal agent it lurking in plain clothes nearby . . . perhaps even your date ? !

Bear with me . . . this is off topic but I had to tell you guys and don't want to start a thread :

Yesterday a "customer" entered our building / store / work shop grabbed a vehicle and took off with it. The owner of the store was watching him and almost stopped him but he got away.
This is the second time this has happened.
Apparently there was enough excitement and action to make a scene and a federal agent happened to be watching this. The agent took off in his plain clothed / unmarked truck. Ran him down, used tactical driving to trap him and . . . that boy is on his way to the slammer.

So be careful what you whip out in a restaurant.

Stop reading the book, 1984 :D

Yes it is weird and what do you do with that nasty folder when your done? Do you stick it back in your pocket with all that crap on it or will we find you in the restroom cleaning your blade

I'm glad I don't live somewhere they arrest people for cutting food...
This thread has gone to a weird, paranoid place.
